Overlord: Raising Hell on GOG - gog.la/KMartSauron THE LIST - docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_K3ziSxT9zcUUGCddS4sF1uNJTWHSbOwB1CQX2Rx4Uo I’ve only heard cursed whispers about the third game. Haven’t played 2 yet.
@@TevyaSmolka There's a WII exclusive game that's pretty much a spin-off set very very far into the past and a third game that's a 4 man coop abomination which should never have been made.
As someone whos a huge fan of the games, 1 is a classic, 2 is a great expansion of the original content, with a few quality of life changes, the 3rd one that's a 4 player brawler is absolutely the worst garbage, and the wii edition is alright. Love that I'm seeing this game though, its a pleasure!
16:20 i think you missed some key info about the plot. The character, the Overlord you control, was One of the Heroes that was sent to defeat the Previous Overlord, but you died and was left in the Overlord's Lair. Years later you where revived by the Tower's Powers (wich was also a ploy of the Previous Overlord), and the Minions off course doesn't tell you about your past, just that you are the New Overlord. The Previous Overlord was defeated by the others heroes, but during the fight the Wizard died while casting his final spell,a nd the Previous Overlord transfered his Soul, into the Wizard's body. AS a way to plot his revenge he used the Wizard's body and manipulated all the others Heroes till they became the douchbags they are when you meet them again. At the End the Previous Overlord tries to snatch back the Power of the Tower and get his Minions back from you, since it was part of the plan he devised to have you reconstruct the Tower and restore its power in his stead, just for him to take it from you and enjoy the Wizards powers AND the Powers of the Overlord. Off course you beat his arse, interestingly Both the Girls are his Daugthers he had while disguising as the Wizard, and both of them tries to help you cause they have daddies issues. You should do Overlord 2, its really great.
I LOVE Overlord 2! I acknowledge it's the only one I've played, so I'm not super familiar with ALL the details in the Lore (though I've read a fair bit on the wiki). But yeah, some interesting tidbits get referenced in 2, to this guy. "Don't get yourself trapped in an infernal Abyss, sire... Just saying." (Not claiming it to be 100% accurate, but yeah. Love Gnarl. Which there are apparently implications that he's a LOOOT older than he looks...)
The sequel fixes a lot of the issues from the first game. For instance, there is no "good or evil" moral choice, instead there is a "evil or downright sadistic" moral choice.
True. but on the other hand the late part of the second game was awfully rushed and the ending came far to quickly. the Story pacing in the first one was better.
@@richardadams8036 That's fair, I totally see that happening, but it was the first game I got for the 360, and holds a special place for that reason, I even replayed them recently because they got made backwards compatible
Overlord 2 is a spectacular game. I was floored back in the day by how much fun it was. Mostly because I was really not expecting it. I couldn't wait to see where they were going to go with the next installment... in true modern gaming fashion though it was a heaping pile of dogshit mobile game...
@@jhonnoilcringeincarnato8593 For a short time I remember this being on mobile: www.y8.com/games/overlord_ii_tower_defense It didn't even work properly on mobile it was hard to put units down. Not that it's much better on PC but man is it weird. If you go to the "official website" it sends you to something very special :) (My guess is that they sold the link) It's a fucking anomaly and the only reason I know about it is because I'm such a big fan of the series. Whoops they were talking about Fellowship of Evil. Guess that's how sad it is that I remembered this over it.
@@poisondamage2182 Not just the name, but that they're specifically a race of slapstick, evil, diminutive, voluntary slaves who seek an evil master to serve and in the sequel get corrupted into more monstrous versions of themselves. Bit of a huge coincidence, no?
It'll be fair to both sides of this debate if we just said that the Disposable Me minions pretty much hijacked the term "minion" and pretty much a hurdle to get over if anyone else tried to use the term like Overlord has. In other words when you tell some random person in the street the word, "minion" where will their mind go to 99/100 times.
I think the music was a missed opportunity with this game - they played it straight when they should've gone for a weird fusion of genres with a dark twist - basically Mr. Bungle.
The game of my childhood. I still have the world map from the physical copy of the game. It's actually very useful as it shows you where some of the upgrades for your tower are if you know where to look.
"I can only wish that the main game had been more like this..."" cough _overlord 2_ cough I never cared much for the first Overlord, yet adored Overlord 2.
The first game is actually supirior in many small ways. In some ways also overlord 2 is better. But all in all they are pretty much on the same level quality vise. If you liked the second game I'd recommend you give the original a shot.
I really appreciate that you took the time to try the controls with both the controller and keyboard & mouse. Not a lot of reviewers spend the time to explain the differences but it can help a lot with a first impression in a game. Great review as always, and I look forward to the next one!
Ahhhhhh, Overlord, what an amazing series, that I truly love, sadly it is now probably dead after the rightful failure of the abomination of a game "fellowship of evil" Edit: If you pay attention, you can see the wizard in all of the locations where the bosses are located, he even tells you that it was him who corrupted the heroes.
Yep. Another fun fact is that the game's story and humor was done by one Rhianna Pratchett, the daughter of Sir Terry Pratchett, the man who wrote the Discworld series. If you know Discworld, you might see some similarities in the humor. She also did 2, which I liked and had far more story, and...sadly...the aformentioned Fellowship of Evil. Uuuuugh. Troll, REEE with me on this.
And apparently the wizard was also the original overlord and actually the heroes killed the protagonist because they wanted all the glory for themselves
@@jhonnoilcringeincarnato8593 From what I remember, the wizard was one of the heroes, but he got possessed by the spirit of the original overlord after their victory. That's how he was able to corrupt the rest of them; he used their friendship with the wizard to influence them. The player character had sacrificed himself to kill the first overlord, which is why he was left dead in the tower. I think the reason the game is so oriented to being a good guy is because there's supposed to be a whole irony around the situation. You're a great hero turned evil tyrant, but all the other heroes became even worse, and you, the blatant bad guy with evil armor and an evil tower, have to save the lands from the old heroes.
This is literally my favorite game of all time. I got introduced to the series with overlord 2, which is arguably as good if not better than overlord: raising hell. Both are great games but differ in a lot of places. Overall you want to act as evil as possible or nice as you want but follow your theme while conquering the world. These games are super old though
The only bad part of Overlord 2 is the spider temple- which is were zero punctuation's review ended because the game apparently didn't grab him so when the part even those who liked the game(like me) disliked happened he dropped it. too bad a lot of the best levels and story happen after that, makes me wonder if he would have gotten into the story and humor if he got to them, since they didn't seem to register to him.
One more series on "I'd really wish it was revived by sane people" list... damn, your videos hurt sometimes. Wait, have you made Fable, B&W or Bard's Tale reviews?
Pro tip: use the max level Minnion spell with 35+ browns/greens in the arcanium mine and attack the slug pile- march the Overlord through, this will trigger the queen slug to spawn, a the small slugs won’t be able to spawn fast enough to keep the minions of her. Now you can enjoy the scenic route through the arcanium mine because no more slugs will spawn. You should only have to kill two or three more.
Playing this game on the hardest difficulty was what made me learn how to kite and choose the right tool for the right job, like the slugs, only greens can do the job efficiently, or trolls, only brows kiting, some blues to ressurect the ones that wont come back fastly and reds as artillery support. One of the best games that I ever played :) The last one is a mess unfortunately
I thought this was a review of a new Overlord title and I was so excited but your just talking about the originals. That's fine I love the Overlord series I wish they would remaster it
What he means is the term minion is hijacked by those yellow things. Tell a random person the word minion and you know what they will think of 99/100 of the time.
@@thedonatello1621 okay? I think Overlord 2 is better than 1 in almost every way (not saying Overlord 1 is bad or something Its amazing) but Overlord 2 had itself more "figured out" and was able to give more content than 1
@@pelinalwhitestrake8289 You're absolutely right. But i personally prefer the 1st one more. Maybe i didn't like how the world has changed there, with those "hippie elves" or "imperial freaks" lmao, the atmosphere is not the same here. I still appreciate this game tho, walked through it like 3-4 times and never had enough. What a great time to remember...
@@thedonatello1621 yeah the first one was a bit darker in its world design, especcially the elven woods who were turned into nightmare realm, both are great games. I personally enjoy the second one more because the battles are larger, its longer, got more side content and they give your antagonists more time to actually be in the story that in the first game
I love this game, flawes and all! Its just so simple and fun dungeon crawler with badass looking hero/villain! I wish they would make new Overlord at somepoint
God i love this game , I always loved the idea of being the antihero of the game and also controling npcs so this game is perfect for me. Wish there were more games like this
Overlord 2 was the first game I played of the franchise and my most favorite. I was addicted to it as a kid, I really wish they would try making an up to date version of the overlord franchise if not completely new. Imagine a new overlord game with the quality story and graphics of God of War 4.
16:40 That's obviously intentional. It's a small easter egg to show you that he's moving around and causing trouble in the background. He's not just sitting in a dark corner waiting for you to do all the work.
I love this game. The sequel was pretty good too. Also, yeah, in this game you get a choice between good and evil, it's the sequel where it's a choice of evil vs very evil.
I just wanted to say, your videos make me absurdly happy. Your style is unique and really enjoyable, and you do a fantastic job. Keep doing your think mate.
Thanks Mandalore, Overlord is one of my favorites games of all-times Edit: ho, you said it was a bad game and wouldn't recommend-it... now i'm just sad
One of my favorite sagas, I played years ago the Wii version and then the 1 and 2 on PC, occasionally I keep remembering how much fun I had with those crazy games. The story is great and quite original, good humor and fun mechanics. Today I keep looking for similar games, I would love a third part, with everything bigger.
The game is old... but man is it one hell of a joy to always be smiling at your lil minions doing the work for you. Was really fun, engaging and to me comedic. Bosses were fairly well written and made, I enjoyed those games.
I remember playing overlord way back in the day. This game concept had so much potential and it really nails a nice personality sometimes. Shame they didn't spend more refining the gameplay (and apparently story (I never got far enough to really notice it not being great))
Ah, Overlord! Literally started replaying this a couple of days ago. To me, it feels like a vastly improved pikmin. Overlord 2 especially with it being easily one of the best games for visual representation of the player improving. Such a shame that the Pikmin-like genre only really consists of Little Kings Story, Overlord & Pikmin, two thirds of which are completely dead.
Walking around with a Minion horde made me feel like I was walking around with a personal hurricane. One that I could customize with the fancy hats of my enemies.
I remember the boss needing elemental attacks that only minions could do but all my minions died in the fight... and I believe reloading didn't reload the closest checkpoint so if I wanted to only restart the bossfight I had to die. Which was very hard because I had so much regen upgrades I was pretty much immortal.
Thanks for this! Really enjoy your videos. Have you ever considered reviewing Enclave (medieval fantasy action 'RPG' from 2002, Xbox & PC originally) - great potential and some great level design (and wordbuilding in general), but also some major flaws in my opinion. There's almost nothing on it on RU-vid at the moment, and I think it's right up your alley. It's available on Steam for PC & MAC (it used to be quite difficult as there were no mid-level save points, but they've changed that now; made it easier but also more accessible to a bigger audience I guess). Anyway, keep it up! Looking forward to more videos!
I have a fondness for this game because the spanish translation was the best I've ever seen. I think it was even better than the original english, which USSUALLY doesn't happen. The voice acting was equally hit or miss, though.
I personally like the subtle way the worldbuilding implies that the existance of an Overlord is necessary for their world, that person acting as a focus for the corrupting energy of evil so that it doesn't seep into the people themselves, as with your predecessor's death corruption and decay has spread, focused around the heroes responsible for his fall, in the second game this aspect is directly implied, as going so long between overlords has caused significant damage and decay to the world and the people in it, both physically and mentally
the concept is interesting but it seems the execution was lacking. would be nice if there was much more to it. taking over towns, interacting with npcs, quests ect.
They added pretty much all of those in the second game, as well as a different morality system where instead of choosing between being good or evil you instead chose whether you wanted to be the kind of bad guy that burns everything to the ground or the kind that conquers everything. In my opinion it's by far the better game
Personally I preferred the morality system of 1 to 2. The divide was often between two kinds of pragmatic villainy in 1. 2 was more a divide between Slavery or Slaughter. Also with Overlord 1s bosses and main choices being based on the 7 deadly sins it had a faceted type of evil. Showing the Overlord as either a benevolent tyrant or a ruthless monster depending on the choices he made in comparison to the fallen heroes. 1. Taking the food vs Giving it to the peasants. On the one hand you could use those supplies to feed your minions, on the other hand, giving them food back to the townsfolk helps earn their loyalty, and keeps them alive so you can exploit them. 2. Keeping Rose or Taking Velvet. Both ladies offered different exclusive benefits to your minions leaving pragmatic reasons to choose either. 3. Killing the unicorns. You could take the easy route and burn the glade with the unicorns in it, saving you time, danger and minions. Or you could kill the unicorns with risk and take the elves gratitude. 4. Taking the gold, or saving the elf species. On the one hand taking the gold certainly benefits your coffers. On the other hand the elves would be indebted to you for saving their species. 5 Taking the statue or giving it back. On the one hand it’s a symbol of the elves that would serve the Overlord as a symbol of power and possession. On the other, you risk making enemies of the undead elves should you take it. 6. Killing or Sparing the townsfolk. On the one hand they betrayed you and showed that they are willing to sell you out if they are in danger, on the other hand, dead peasantry provide no labour, taxes or supplies. Overlord 2 is just more like, enslave them or kill them outright without more nuance. The theme that was balance of Good, Evil and Order was introduced far too late and was rushed over at the last little while of the game.
overlord is honestly, my favorite game in existence, and to this day i am ungodly depressed that the series died and i wont lie i am the type to begin to autistically attack any who say an issue with it, i love this game to a sinful degree
Heh. The elven play reminded me of a scene in the Visio Tnugdali where one of the punishments in hell is that all the sinners have to sit in a theatre and display their own sins in front of the others but in a grotesque way. The greedy ate their own arms on stage, sleeping around a lot was rewarded with having to display intercourse on stage with the partners eating each other and lots of other grotesque punishments (yes, medieval christian scholars were weird like that). I don't know if the developers took inspiration from that but since Tertullian the theatre has been looked to hell and sin anyway.
I remember playing the Overlord: Dark Legend for the Wii as a kid. I could never get over the fact that I bought the game expecting to be the BBEG but every story and enemy I fought seemed to be just as evil if not more sometimes. I think a villager even thanked me at one point. Even though looking back, the game wasn't as great as I used to think it was, Little Lord Gromgard did have one hell of an armour set!
Personally I started with Dark Legend and felt like this was Evil in an evil world but the idea of the successful overlord hinges on pragmatic villainy. Which I think Dark Legend essentially capitalised on by focusing on the concept that the Evil Overlord still needs a domain to rule over. He needs slaves and peasants to run an economy so he can supply his armies, he needs these assets safe and secure so he can use them, they can’t do that if they are all too busy dying to work. Basically lampshaded by what the peasants say about the Black Baron. They were enslaved and punished for disobedience but they were safe from bandits and the other races/nations and fed enough.
