Yes, some critics, but not all, totally underestimated the tactical potential and the quality of the puzzles in the game. Fellowship of Evil is non-canon, one of the main writers for the game had stated that it follows its own storyline and is separate from the main Overlord timeline. Meaning the Fourth Overlord is still alive and the current ruling Overlord.

@Twiddly Stosh Yeah, EA is a mess these days. The same goes with Ubisoft and some other big companies/studios. So yeah, it looks like those 3 overlord games (1, 2 and one for Wii) is all we got and that's it. We will never see any Overlord game anymore, which is sad.
The gaming community needs to start a petition for true fans of the series to get them to develop a PROPER third installment. Featuring a story where you can play as the father or the son, and has the best mechanics of the games. A story of how the father returns to help/resurrect his son to fight a rising power, before they fight for supremacy or split the spoils.
I first played that game and was 12 years old, im 20 now, have been through both overlord 1 and 2 multiple times and still have the fondest memories of those games. Thanks for putting back the lore puzzle pieces together I'm glad i finally understand the bigger picture.
I think I'm quite satisfied with the fate of the third Overlord. I've seen too many player characters from original games get done dirty in their sequels (I'm looking at you, prototype). This time around, I would say that by being trapped in this world's take on Hell as it's ruler is a way in which the original player character gets immortalized in the most appropriate way. He basically got promoted to the devil, and one doesn't get more overlord than that.
Yeah, i remember the disappointment with prototype 2. Im glad Overlord at least did it better. I would have still liked to see the 3rd overlord again, like a nod to the audience thats hes still there at least. A callback or something. I miss these games. And played them too many times. I wish there was a 3rd game.
I'd really love to see an Overlord game with a bigger budget, more developed puzzles and RTS combat. Honestly there is so much subtle worldbuilding in the first game that if it was given more development whilst keeping the same comedic themes it would be seriously awesome

Every overlord fan considers fellowship of evil either non canon or an alt timeline. on top of the writers themselves saying it's a non canon spinoff. Cuz the fact is the infernal overlord would have very likely found a way out of the abyss in that time kicked everyones asses and either fought or ruled with his son. Also they forgot that one weird overlord ds game. Also if fans give the fourth overlord a nickname called overlad then the third should be called Either the infernal god or The fallen hero(reffering to him being the eighth hero)
There's a theory on the wiki that gnarl might have been a former overlord who was transformed into a minion. I would like to think that he is more and likely the black baron because in game not a lot is known about him.
I wish we'd get a similar game where we can play with a powerful necromancer or lich, raising and commanding undead instead of minions. That would be so awesome!
its implied that an overlord died in an abyss once as gnarl says in raising hell when your in the infernal abyss best not get cut into pieces its a pain bringing an overlord back or somethign along those lines.

Do you realize the four Overlord was never killed by that unicorn if you compared the game Overlord 2 and Fallowship of Evil both games have different overload four Overlord tower was underground while Fallowship of Evil Overload tower was at the surface they even show it in the cut scene
Congratulations on the lore for the Overlord game series you guys! The Minions are one of my favorite characters in the game because they look resemble to gremlins or goblins. Fun fact though that the Minions were named after those little yellow one or two eyed humanoids from the movie we all loved is Despicable Me which Gru who's supporting them since he stole the crown from Scarlet Overkill by his famous freeze ray when met them for the first time in their movie sequel.
Imagine if the greedy company that owns the rights to overlord allows a studio to make a new game. Think about it Overlord 3, Idea? Well only thing i can think of is to do something old yet new. It can be about the third overlord but in the hell dimension he has been stuck in for years. Maybe we find out that he made his new demonic minions build a tower in that dimension and that serves as your tower in the game. And perhaps this could take place years after the fourth overlord had died or been gone for a long time. You come out of a hell portal that you use to acess the mortal realms and see what humanity and other races has done to the place after the fall of the fourth overlord. I dont know i think it could be a cool idea.
I’m the kind of guy who hates wasting soldiers in games like these like I’ll always keep the minions in the back while I kill everything and then have them pick up the loot even in Bossfight s I only bring in like five to make sure somebody is still alive to pick up the unique item lol.anyone the same?

Really did enjoy this was great! It brings back all sorts of good memories back when I first played these games...Least all except Overlord 1 since at the time I didn't know there was a Overlord 1 since I was really young...but yeah I still love the series even now and I keep going back to Overlord 2 because I just love that one the most of out them all just the most enjoyable to me...but I just wish they would make a third actual installment of the series because I am just in need of something fresh and new to this beautiful series and not get some spin-off game that is just really awful and I hate how they make the way the 4th Overlord (Who to me is the most badass and probably the strongest) get killed by a damn UNICORN....like I know it was a spin-off and they said it wasn't cannon anyways but still killing him off in there to a damn unicorn seems really insulting to him...but whatever..I will say again I hope that they will give us something on the Overlord Series or at least an actual True Overlord 3 where the 4th is ether still alive is killed in a actual proper way suitable to him and his father the 3rd Overlord comes back from the infernal abyss to reclaim his Empire once more! (Even tho i still would much prefer the 4th overlord because his design seems much more fitting and looks so much cooler to me)
Fellowship of Evil was a massive let down. While I like goofy shit in my entertainment, the humor of Fellowship of Evil went too far in an overly cartoony direction. Not to mention the fact that the minions who were once the main feature of this series take a back seat to what is essentially a four player Diablo. Maybe if they specified that it was a spin-off, I would've been more capable of accepting this type of game, but as it stands, it seems more like a bad direction that may have killed this series.
I think Infernal God Overlord from the first game is a better match, Witch Boy is strong physically and a capable sorcerer but Sauron is a literal cosmic death god.

I'd love for the series to have more entries in it, though considering the company that made it is owned by EA, it's unfortunately rather unlikely we'll get any more games.
Odd long comment, LMK if anyone reads all this and if you like it? So i love this series so much so i wish i could remake it if i had millions of dollors. I would buy the rights and pay a team to make this idea i think they should do, myself. Which is i wish a compilation game would be made with the raign of each overlord being their own big long chapters, with a new first and final chapter and sections throughout utalizing my own personal headcannon. Simpy called OVERLORDS It would be structured and start like this. Or skip to part 6 for a decent overlord 3 idea. Part 1 The New Despair: Young Duke Gromgard and his dark looking brother whos a Baron finds and enters the ruined remains of a sealed off anciant tower. Inside they find a very old brown minion trapped and hiding from a giant weasle, the weasle beast of the tower is very weak and decrepid having been sealed away for centureis, this serves as the first easy semi boss fight/combat totorial. After defeating it they pull a spikey suit of armor thats falling out of its discheveled corps of a warrior that it had once swallowed. Including a gauntlet with an small orb that we later find out seems to have a corrupting influice. Baron stops his brother Duke from killing the old minion to tell its tale. The old minion explains his name is Gnarl and he is the only remaining member from a previous generation of minions during a rain of a family line of overlords centuries or a millenia ago. That the giant weasle finished off the last remaining leader of that dark empire dring that time long ago. The old minion now free, recognises the strengh of the brothers who rescues him and thinks to himself their family line would be perfect for a new line of overlords and gifts Baron the armor and orb. The darker of the Gromgard nobel brothers, Baron Gromgard over a short time proves more suseptable to the corruption now festering in their castle they had built over the ruins. He dons the armor and becomes Black Baron the true First Overlord of this line. The points of his campaign could be early on he works with Gnarl and is the one who recreates the minion hives himself, to give birth to a new generation of young minions. He could also be the one who creates the towerheart itself. Later on in his campaign could be against ridding the land of dragon folk mentioned later in the minions nintendo DS game unfortuately missing from this video. Dragon folk mostly terrorize the land from a nearbye magic floating island and Black Baron defeats their dragon king. Each overlord can have their final boss and end credits depicting that they sucessfully concored the land, but after that then they can have a new additional section of the game that takes place over a time jump, you play as that overlord ruling over the land they cocured during their respective time perods. Revisiting areas on the map that occasionally gain an alarm icon and the overlord has to travel to those sections and rid the area of good magical creaters or enemies that have resurfaced in that area. Up until the player gets board of that and chooses to trigger a final level or cutscene that depicts that overlords downfall. For Black Barons is that he gets defeated by his brother young Duke Gromgard and he is exciled and left for dead on the dragon island which floats away. Part 2 Dark Legend: The good and incorruptable brother Duke Gromgard makes Gnarl wonder if he chose the wrong family line but steels his resolve since he recognizes they are smart and strong and potentially corruptable/dark magically inclined. He hides the gauntlet stone in their castle to corrupt Duke's children with its energy. Old Duke Gromgard over time gets a little wacky in his feble old age decades later and goes on adventures leaving his kids behind. The most evil looking of his children recives the corrupting minion controlling gauntlet from Gnarl on his 16th birthday as a gift. He finds his uncles lair and dons the armor becoming the actual Second Overlord. After his adventures the 2nd has the longest time jump that happens after his campaign to claim the land, the minions DS game can be bonus levels since he is the one who commands them in that game where they fend off a short lived incursion of dragons folk when the floating island drifts too close. The 2nd overlord having spent by far the longest time as overlord during his map maintaining ruling period after his initial land concoring campain ironically becomes the tallest of what would be the 4 overlords later on, he aslo becomes the strongest in posession ability being his specalized skill, maybe also it gets explained that he lived long enough to overcome corruption muteness and can speak again eventually. His defeat gets shown at the end of his chapter when we find out his father Duke Gromgard being too old and weak to fend off another dark overlord had a son with the magic witch later before death by old age, in the hopes that his 4th child would be the one to defeat his evil older brother and bring peace back to the land and end whatever is cursing the family, that young strong knight joins a band of heros becoming their 8th and defeats his unbeknownst evil overlord elder brother by falling off the top of the tower with him. Part 3 Raising Hell: Gnarl sensing the Gromgard family line in this young knight, saved him with what little magic ability he has because the knight was in a coma and not actually dead. He was left behind by his hero comrads thinking he was. With memory loss and easily corrupted unconciously he quickly becomes the 3rd Overlord. During his campaign he finds out that during the final moments of the previous overlord's life, who ejected his magically inclined soul from his body and possessed the wizard to save himself from the fall. After concering the land the 3rd Overlord has the shortest lived raign entering the Infernal Abyss and defeated the Forgotten God, getting trapped within by the A-hole traitor Jester minion closing the portals. (Maybe later revealed to of been under orders of Gnarl who sensed a stronger evil presece in Rose's womb) But this left the towerheart undefended causing a catastraphy when tampered with by an elf later on. This got too long and youtube forced me to cut this tale in half so i added the rest as a comment to myself below.
Continued. Part 4 Battle rock: The bastard son of the previous overlord is found by Gnarl and becomes the 4th Overlord using the Netherrelm as his home base and brings down the anti magic empire. Maybe his after overlads campaign reign can depict him defeated by the sining justice and is presumed dead but is actually in hiding deep within the netherelm recovering, cut off from the nether tower for some reason like maybe because he got unicorn donkey kicked off the tower battle rock arena and fell into the deep pits of the neather world's underside. Part 5 Fellowship of Evil: Gnarl upset that this knew family line of overlords has been broken again like in his long past centuries or a millenia ago, decides to go a new route. He sends the minions to find The Big Book O Evil fogotten to of been created by the Forgotten God, and learns how to actually resurrect warriors. Gnarl chooses 4 good candidates to become Neatherghouls to work together, even though individually they arent quite as powerful as an actual living overlord thats been corrupted from a strong family line of leaders, they succeed in getting revenge against the shining justice group. This game will have adjusted camera and minion controls to match the other games so that it dosent suck as much. Part 6 War of the Realms: the final chapter of OVERLORDS or like as an extention of part 5, or as a game on its own called Overlord 3. Gnarl, with the Neatherghouls and The Big Book O Evil, uses this newfound knowledge to try to ressurect any of the previously semi recently deceased overlords whos souls might still be reachable, but finds out he cant since the 2nd has an immortally anchered soul which posessed another body in and has become the powerful master of the spiritual purgitory realm since he became familiar with it in death, and the other Overlords are still fully alive. This triggeres a convergance and conflict of the 4 Gromgard family overlords for the currently unclaimed land. This final chapter can be played differently with each playthrough with the player choosing which overlord to play, more like Gnarl and his main hord of minions choosing which overlord they liked best, to join. The Neatherghoul with enough warewithol to make their own decisions and easily seduced by more power, maybe at random choose which overlords they want to be second in command with and undead general in the army of wichever faction they want to join. Or most likely by elemental similarity with Hackon joining with First, Malady with Second, Inferna with Third and Cryos with Fourth. Its all almost too perfect. This final chapter can depict the 4 overlords with enhanced looks gained from their time away in their separate realms and enhanced powers and also having heavy units as additions to their army along with some minions who have defected to their influince and corruption. The Back Baron who i forgot to mention has fire based power like the 3rd since the other two overlords have electric whip. Anyway he and his home base on the floating island return to reclaim the land having gained control of dragon folk and maybe other magical island creatures into his army. He gained a scaily skinned look under his dark armor with glowing yellow slitted snake eyes and maybe even wings and tail Onaga style because he drank the dragon kings blood in a ritual to become the new Lord of the dragon folks island while in exile. He speaks in hisses and takes on the monicure of Black Dragon Overlord. Choosing him gives a boost to green minions. The 2nd Overlords home base is behind a foggy portal into the spirtual limbo purgitory realm and has gained control of something like ghostly abbarition creatures into his army. His enhanced look could be again ironically tall compaired to his childhood, thin and lankey, etherial and wispy maybe even bearded in remeberance of his time as the wizard and a hooded helmate in rememberance of the clothes he wore as a child with blank dead grey glowing eyes. He speaks with a deep wise and old commanding voice. He takes on the monicure of something like Spirit or Ghost or Necro Overlord. Choosing him gives a boost to the brown hard to kill minions. The 3rd Overlords home base is behind a firey portal into the hellish abyss where he has gained control of a variety of skeletal undead creatures into his army. His enhaced look from time in the Abyss is Firey, Spikey and Horned like the devil himself dripping lava and red fog from his crevices like in the Overlord 3 concept art image and eyes glowing orange. Not fully over come his corruption muteness yet he communicates mostly with Roars. He takes on the monicure of Infernal Overlord. Choosing him gives a boost to red fire minions. And the recently recovered 4th Overlord climbs up and returns to the Netherrelm tower bringing along conqured, Lovecraftian looking, deep Neatherrelm pit monsters into his army. His enhanced look can be like the unused destruction corruption look concept art for his game where he looks more magical with glowing turquoise veins and eyes and antlers like a wendigo, and most creepaly of all he is the only overlord who continues who remains silent. He is given the monicure of Nether Overlad. Choosing him gives a boost to the blue magic minions. The map territory maintaining, control and conquering idea ive mentioned throughout could be heavily utilized in this final chapter. As the overlords attempt to conquer the territories of the land surrounding the other overlords home bases. Before entering eachothers personal relms to defeat them. As a domination or destuction choice you could either devour the souls of other overlords and/or their nasgule generals ending them for a huge power boosts or make them submit and recuite them to join you as subordinates Agamemnon style, giving you additional powerful warriors to command or play with. Once the territories of war map has been conquered/tamed from war first and a credits section rolls, kind of a switcharoo from previous chapters happens, after a time jump a short, final story mode gets unlocked. A final portal appears and this one is to an angelic heavenly relm where the good souls go and a new faction comes threw to wage war. Weather the overlords joined together or devoured eachother for power boosts a final campaign commences with the forces of ultimate good vs the forces of evil! Maybe leading the charge from heaven is a revived and in prime young Duke Gromgard as the general in command of heavins forces as a late game boss acting as sort of the the good overlord in the family, he can even cuteify your minions. And he calls you brother, son or grandson depending on which overlord your fighting him as. Im thinking the final boss of the whole series as the source of heavens army is the Mother Goddess mentioned threwout the series. Some additional thoughts is some boss fights in the final game could be maybe the traitor Jester minion who obviously has more magical ablility than let on gets brought down as a boss fight, or also maybe Gnarl himself reveals hes been manipulating lines of overlords since anciant times for huge amounts of power, or maybe influinced by The Big Book O Evil he becomes a boss fight himself. Also after the mother goddess boss fight and entire series as a whole could have multiple endings, keeping with the theme of overlords falling, the forces of heaven destroy all remenances of the overlords and good concuring over evil once and for all. Or the overlord/s win finally concuring the land from good once and for all. Thats it for the story. I still grew this too much. Continued below.
Series controls changes thoughts. Each overlord in their own chapter has full control of the camera using the right thumbstick. Instead of the annoying to accidentally go into remote control of the minions. Instead that ablility is switched to holding down the shoulder button that was used to select minions, or the button that was used to center the camera, i remember that finger getting so sore it would swell and hurt for days. Each overlord has had their minions line up behind them in different ways. That could remain as unique traits or better yet each overlord has all formations, clicking the left thumbstick will make the minions line up differently behind you. Triangle like 3rd, reverse triangle like 4th in addition to single file rows horizontally or vertically giving a more militaristic feal, these formations can have benefits like speed, range, and spread when they are lauched forward and the last one for defensive posture better defending the overlord when he is attacked. Maybe the various formations are boosted by each overlords preference from whichever game they first appeared in. Each overlord uses the domination or destruction scale like in 4th's chapter. Domination making you look more followable and destruction making u look more evil like in 3rd's chapter. Spells, Fire spell can now dominate townsfolk like electric whip. All the overlords spells and spell upgrades can be directly selected with the dpad and used by the magic button like 3rd, however all overlords can choose which spell to place in sequence for a combo, starting with whatever spell they use to dominate then choosing one of their able to be placed as a middle and ending in whatever spell we want to use as a combo finisher, similar to the 4th overlord. All games will have aurmor for reds blues and greens like the 4th, and will all have mounts included throughout their chapters including something for the blues like platypuses or whatever. All games will have augement modifer stones to customozise your overlord a little depending on their allignment. Meaning placing one on the overlord himself will switch his armor to the more evil destroyer look causing villagers to run away even if his abilities have been leaning more towards dominator, they can also be placed on spells switching that one spell to the dominator ablility if the overlord himself is leaning towards destroyer with everything else. Multiplayer thougths. Could utalize all multiplayer modes from previous games, but with the ability to play them with different overlords not just pallet swaps. Speaking of pallet swaps, each overlord in their game could be given a clone ability making each story mode multiplayer. And the final chapter could use the 4 overlords war map as a land conqering multiplayer mode, maybe sending out minions, conquered civilian races and monsters in their empires territories as claimed outposts for defese or to attack enemy territiroies preventing them from spreading, territories that other players have to destroy, and as one overlord himself is out claiming territories of other players factions single handedly he might not know that other overlord players are in the middle of ransacking his tower etc etc. Maybe after you complete the whole series, the angelic general of heavens army Duke Gromgard gets unlocked in mulitplayer as like the 5th overlord family faction of goodness, to war against other players with. Im obiviously bringing back too much thought ive put into this series from back in the day. Who am i kidding this will never be made of course. Maybe i should just write a fan fiction instead lol. If no one ever reads this at least i documented my long winded thoughts somewhere to send to the overlord creators one day if they still exist.

I actually revised it a little bit here and there on some other overlords vids before i put a final form of it in a word doc. With some corrections to the DragonKin lore and some additional story and gameplay ideas threwout. Idk if youde be interested in that enough for me to email it to you or whatever. But im curious, were you talking about trying to make your own lore about the overlord series, or about the family connection ideas I talked about? Cause either way that would be awesome! Today's kids and teens grew up on Despicable Me's minions, but OGs had these guys. Imo if a new overlord game was made, new minion types NEED to be introduced. I even have a few ideas for types White: Snow Minions. These minions can survive extreme cold and are able to go in low temp areas with no problem, they can also cross snowy areas by burrowing through the snow. They'd be white and have fur around their ankles, arms, back and a big white mane, similar to a yeti Black Minions: Rocky Minions. These minions can scale rocky walls and are incredibly strong. A single black minion can carry items to the tower or move obstacles with ease. In combat they are slow but pack a huge punch, but are not the best as main fighters due to their slow movement. They would have black rocky skin with enlarged fists, emphasizing their strength and climbing ability Yellow Minions: Electric minions. These guys can power up mechanical drawbridges and machines, helping cross areas that are inaccessible. They can also hurl lightning bolts, being ranged fighters like the reds. However, they cannot touch water AT ALL and will electrocute themselves, you, and any other minions with them if they go in water due to their electricity shooting out uncontrollably. They will be yellow and have electricity pulsating around them constantly, and be extremely jittery Grey Minions: Stealth Minions. These guys are your reconnaissance and sneaky minions. If you want a treasure or need minions to turn a crank but enemies are too many or strong, these guys are up for the job. They can turn invisible and slip past enemies completely unnoticed. However, they are terrible fighters and very weak, so if they are caught and hit just once by an enemy, they are gone. They will be grey and have mist always coming from their eyes and body around them
I had a similar idea for the black minions except they'd be a "domesticated" version of the mutant minions from overlord 2, also maybe the white minions can throw snowballs that slow down and debuff enemies
To be honest yes I agree fellowship of evil was awful but I really liked the overlord candidates and think it had potential to be an awesome game they just rushed it
I just played the game for the first Time only 30 min so far but wow this is amazing. I love the style. It's just like the Fable 1 sequel I always wanted! Can't believe I never played it before. Is the first one good? And I saw a part 3 already released on Xbox One
I like how the first game is kind of a parody of Lord of the Rings, as if saying "what if The Fellowship of The Ring were the villains?", and then it makes you play as a Sauron like character, without actually redeem your character.
your character can be redeemable, sure youre the titular overlord whos goal is to conquer the land, but the game gives you the choice of what kind of ruler you want to be, want to be merciful and spare the lives of your subjects? go ahead, want to feed them so they dont go hungry? go ahead, want to rescue captive peasants and save the lives of their women? retrieve holy artifacts and protect sacred places?
Good vid, this series is super underrated and sadly not expanded upon lore wise (maybe that's a good thing, they might just screw it up like they did with the non-triumph games) so most stuff is vague and mysterious, speculation. One minor thing: Nordberg isn't necessarily in the north, according to the world map it might just be the south pole. Another minor thing: Rose and Velvet are the Wizard's daughter's, not Second's.
