Just an FYI: An entire volume of the LN is being made into a movie. That LN plot takes place between S4E7 and S4E8. Just know that there are some translation errors in this part. When they refer to assisting the Theocracy, they are supposed to say Roble Holy Kingdom (where the upcoming movie's plot has already occurred in terms of the timeline)

According to a YT channel that makes Overlord Content, this season doesn't represent the time very well. Ainz has been in this new world for over a year now (I think) and in the anime he seems to have done everything in a matter of days or weeks so far

the translation issue was fixed, you can see it says holy kingdom at the start and not theocracy, on some sites it hasnt been updated tho, so good to keep in mind (also its 2 Ln being adapted not one)

@@Anthyrion I'm an anime only and that's never been the impression I got, the anime makes it fairly clear that several months pass between some events, like the decision to mount the campaign against the Re-Estize kingdom and then its actual occurrence at least a few weeks-months after at the end of season 3. Personally it seems quite obvious to me that a significant amount of time has taken place since the very start of the show

In regards to the end scene with the king offering to take the punishment of the stupid noble Philip, it is echoing the earlier scene where Ainz deflects the blame from Hilma Cygnaues first to Abedo for not properly managing her to ultimately himself for allowing the chain of events to happen. In both cases the King and Ainz are going with the authority principle that the buck stops here. This means ultimately that the top person in charge is responsible for the actions of the entire chain of subordinates beneath them. Thus the King and Ainz have similar management styles.

Quick reminder: if Hilma Cygnaeus has been so obediant since the beginning of the season, it's because after Mare broke her leg and brought her to Nazarick in season 2 ep11, she was sent to Kyouhukou (the cockroach guy). He tortured her, completely traumatizing her to the point that she couldn't eat solid food because the torture involved having her organs eaten from the inside by his carnivorous roaches (Hilma makes several references such as the things sliding down her throat when she remembers the torture). That's why she seems so frightened in that scene, she doesn't wanna be punished because she knows of horrible torture in Nazarick is.

Hello friend, ¿how are you doing? As I mentioned before, this chapter actually takes place two years later, after the events of what will be the movie, so I'll have to be very careful not to spoil. The Holy Oak Kingdom had a terrible crisis related to Jaldabaoth and at that time they were desperately seeking help. But since the Re-Estize Kingdom was still suffering from the last battle against Ainz and was starting to have food problems from all the men who died and couldn't till the fields, Zanac decided that they couldn't help them and didn't even meet those emissaries. Therefore, with no other choice, the Holy Oak Kingdom asks the undead king Ainz Own Goal for help and thanks to this he manages to survive. Now the Holy Oak Kingdom has formed an Alliance with Nazarick and is slowly recovering. Zanac then tries to forge relationships with them to build a united front of humanity, but this time it's the Holy Oak Kingdom that doesn't want to talk to those who didn't help them. The situation is worse because the Re-Estize Kingdom is suffering from food shortages. Instead, thanks to their alliance, the Holy Oak Kingdom receives daily carts of food sent from Nazarick, which pass directly through the kingdom's roads. Nazarick has plenty of food because it has fields worked by undead who never tire. So now the Re-Estize Kingdom is like a starving beggar who sees a food cart go by every day that he can't eat. Then we go back to idiot Phillip. When we left him two years ago, he was very happy with the Sorcerous Kingdom, but things have changed. He has finally realized that in his faction of incompetent nobles he really has no more power than Hilma. Also, none of his ideas to improve his territory have improved and as always (it's a reflection of him conditioning him) Phillip assumes that it's everyone else's fault but him. So, when a couple of nobles, who are only slightly less stupid, tell him about the Sorcerous Kingdom wagons full of grain on their way to the Holy Oak Kingdom... he decides to steal them. The worst mistake ever made. To achieve this, Phillip recruits a very poor group of his farmers armed with sticks and he puts them together with those brought by the two nobles. Meanwhile, the grain wagons are escorted by groups of mercenaries working for the 8 Fingers, more than enough to fend off Phillip's rabble, but the leader recognizes Phillip because the fool hadn't even closed his helmet visor. For this reason, the leader is scared, because he knows that Phillip is the "puppet" of Hilma, who is one of his employers. Killing Phillip could ruin the plans of the 8 Fingers, so the leader decides to give him the cart with wheat and escapes to report and ask for instructions. Phillip is very happy about this and imagines himself as a great general who has defeated the Sorcerous Kingdom. So, in his madness, he rips the flag of Ainz Own Goal from his chariot and stomps on it in a humiliating manner. All this is seen by Nazarick's spies, who immediately report it. “A noble from the Re-Estize Kingdom dared to raid a diplomatic convoy with humanitarian aid for the Holy Oak Kingdom and trampled the Flag of the Sorcerous Kingdom!” That is the message that Renner and Zanac read and that surprised them so much, because no one could imagine that someone could be so stupid as to gift such an obvious Casus Belli to the Sorcerous Kingdom. And one would think that in Nazarick they would celebrate having such a good excuse for war, but it is not so. Because Phillip's stupidity has been so great, that neither Albedo nor Demiurge can believe it's true and assume that it is a conspiracy from another country or an unknown enemy to cause war for reasons they cannot understand. The confusion is so great, that the NPCs decide to resort to the wisdom of Ainz, who for once is correct in assuming that perhaps Phillip was simply stupid enough to do it. This unleashes a lot of emotions among the guardians. But the most disturbed by this is Albedo, because she was the one who approved this plan and the one who approved the stupid noble that they would use as a puppet. Now Demiurge's carefully calculated strategy, which involved provoking a civil war is ruined, so we see her trying to accuse Hilma and punish her, it's an unconscious gesture by Albedo to ease her own humiliation. I don't have to tell you that if before Albedo planned to make Phillip suffer for touching her before, now he has earned all of her wrath. It has made it very personal. What I'll pause to tell you is that Shalltear has been given authority over the Frost Dragons and is using them to create an air transportation service for the Sorcerous Kingdom. That's why we see Hejinmal flying with a backpack for a second. Anyway, back at the meeting, Ainz forgives Hilma because the way Albedo berates her reminds him of his experiences in the company and unknowingly sparks a fanatical adoration from her. He then makes a careless comment and inadvertently causes the NPCs to go into "Final Solution" mode and decide to escalate Demiurge's plan for the Kingdom, but applied to the entire world. The idea is that if a country joins Nazarick everything will be fine, but if it defies it in the slightest... When the declaration of war arrives, we see that Demiurge has started the battle on the diplomatic field, because he not only sent a copy of the document to the Holy Oak Kingdom, the Dwarf Kingdom and the Baharut Empire, which are his allies, but also to the known country such as Argland Council State and the Draconic Kingdom, with whom they have common borders and could have been convinced to send aid to the Re-Estize Kingdom, but by putting their seals on the document they are acknowledging that the Nazarick war is a "Rightful War "and they can no longer intervene militarily. In the Declaration of War also appears the seal of someone known as "Faceless Preacher" who is the leader of a cult or group that is becoming powerful in the Holy Oak Kingdom, to the point of displacing the original religion of the people. This character will be important in the movie to come. Zanac thinks throughout the meeting that his father is already becoming incapable and that he cannot see reality, but when he sees him offer his head like that, he suffers a terrible shock and realizes that he is not as good a king as his father. The prince wanted to sacrifice a nobleman without fair trial to save the kingdom, but his father by sacrificing himself offers an apologetic gesture to Nazarick that is impossible to underestimate and at the same time preserves the honor and justice of his nation, just as a true king would do. (I confess that part really touched me) Well friend, that's all for now. I hope you have found the information interesting and also that you have understood some things that perhaps did not seem to make sense. That Phillip is amazing! He managed to surprise Renner, Albedo, Demiurge and Hilma with his stupidity! Nobody imagined that someone would be that stupid! But that's the great thing about Overlord, when he introduces us to so many interesting character types in one story that one I couldn't stop following. So far there are 16 books but two more should come out next year. But I always keep hope that the author decides to continue more. And as always, I recommend the Overlord Lore videos on AniNews.

Bad Guy is relative. Honestly Nazarick is mostly True Neutral or Lawful Neutral. To the people of Nazarick and those aligned with him and his kingdom, Ainz is a dark hero, or an anti-hero, but he is still very much so a hero. As an example of relativity relating to bad guys. What is a Hero in an RPG who is the lone fighting figure who goes out to defeat the Demon King to bring peace to the kingdom of men? An assassin with a nationwide marketing campaign. Or for real life, one country's villain is another country's hero.

@@shinken6636 Buddy. Take a chill pill and relax. Also if you wanted to properly reinforce your assessment you should've stated something more akin to "that it was from the very beginning because the faction was built under the idea of a bunch of players roleplaying villains and setting up their NPCs to match their faction leaning." or something along those lines as a starting point. You're letting your sentimentalism get to you if your idea is that they only became villains on season 3 and that is solely because you were given the backstory of the characters who went into Nazarick. And a schemer who commits horrible acts doesn't necessarily get moved to being a villain, it's why we have multiple different sub categories, like anti heroes where a hero will commit morally righteous acts to their principles even if those actions are morally questionable to those outside of themselves. I still state that they are primarily True Neutral or Lawful Neutral because their goals and actions are primarily towards the maintenance of their own faction and normally would be solely dedicated to their internal affairs, and the primary reason why Nazarick doesn't devolve into full blown lawful evil is basically because Ainz is holding out from doing what he used to do, which is roleplay an evil character. Which again is the key word here, roleplay. Because his actual self is that of a regular human being, his set of morals is indeed at odds with his inability to feel, but that simply means he has a more detached viewpoint of things. You could more easily argue that he is effectively as cold and neutral as an unfeeling man would be, closer to begin a sociopath, but still wanting to do good to the world. And regarding the whole alignment charts, did you know that a fanatic righteous paladin who believes that all sinners must be punished in hellfire and commits a genocide of a population would still be considered Lawful Good in Dungeon and Dragon? There are multiple ways to interpret the whole alignment chart, whether it be by intent, by action or by nature. By nature, most of Nazarick is Evil, by intent, Ainz is arguably good. By action, they are mainly neutral, with both political and personal decisions that fall in both evil or good alignment by that factor. Did they perform objectively evil acts, certainly. But they also performed objectively good acts as well. And your statement that Neutral characters don't commit actions like genocide. I take it you've never seen a campaign of neutral murderhobos. You could then argue to me, well these are sub human characters, goblins, orcs, trolls, they're not human beings so therefore their genocide at the hands of adventurers is acceptable. To which we're delving into a different set of moral quandry because these creatures still have a level of awareness and form societies as well. We would need to be in a Goblin Slayer style world to be able to objectively state that these creatures need to be eliminated. But in Overworld, these creatures have been shown to be able to integrate to human society. Basically. Think a little bit more before you argue please. I hope you have a good day and I hope you realize that an opposing viewpoint to yours isn't just a matter of naivety, ignorance or a lack of consideration of the matter.
@highwindknight
@highwindknight Год назад
@@themonotonousmaker378 Morals of our world is interestingly very relative as well. Say that a country was attacked by terrorists. These terrorists are evil. Say that the reason they attacked that was because our country engaged in chemical warfare in the past and caused their families to die horrendous deaths, they are heroes then, but not to us. Say that the country employed secret services and captured members of that faction that attacked the country and affected the lives of thousands of civilians, and that these captured members were tortured for information and that the torture required weeks of ongoing breaking of their will to gather the information required to take down the group of terrorists. Horrendous or heroic, which one would it be? Well, in the end it's easier to classify them as purely Neutral, of self interest, whether the action taken is good or evil. And what is an acceptable punishment for enemies of the state, or criminals? A person leading the suicide of many by their own greed but equally giving opportunities to others to make a living could be called a good boss or a horrible opportunist by different people. Just as how a petty thief stealing from a happy family to feed his own could be similarly judged. But as you stated, if we are to apply our own personal sensibilities, then yes, subjectively based on our own defining limitation of acceptable actions to others which can be determined as an objective set of ideals that needs to be noted as being subject to our country's own standardized sets of values, yes he would be a villain, if his actions were considered to be against our country, ourselves, our loved ones or to those undeserving or equally determined to be innocent. But that is also still working under the premise that we are dealing with humans on humans here. I think the closest we can look at this would be more from the viewpoint of what the circumstances are. Beings above humans acting unto humans. Or in our cases. Humans acting on non-humans. Say that we are researching a cure, or any other benefit to us, the human race which for now we will rename as Nazarick. Do you think it would be morally okay for us to research potential cures or other items that would enable us to enrich, better our lives, or assist in future qualms by experimenting on rats and frogs, which we will hereby name New World Humans. Also as a head's up. I suggest you don't get heated discussing with me. If it wasn't clear enough, I am approaching this as a mental exercise and have pretty much detached myself emotionally from the subject matter. I'm just thoroughly exploring the arguments by now.
@highwindknight
@highwindknight Год назад
Oh and, pardon the double reply. I usually dislike the statement that subjectivity is king and that objectivity doesn't exist. Objective assessment is indeed a thing and it does exist, but it is also subject to relativity and subjectivity as well. Like everything, context matters. For example, yes there is quantitative qualities of good writing, so good writing can be objectively assessed. But similarly, objectively bad writing can still be objectively good based on a different criteria, such as enjoyment or the impact it has on people. Mind you these do not negate other objective assessment. Likewise, our discussion of good, evil, morality and the like is a loaded mine because we are effectively always subjective to it based on the good and bad to us or others like us. But it becomes far more touchy when dealing with non-humans. Is it objectively good to act as the superior to other beings that we deem sub-human and treat them like property, i.e. having pets. You could effectively argue one way or the other and the issue is that it is indeed a gray area due to a multitude of issues and facets to our relation with pets. And since you all decided to be so forthright, I figured it would only be best for me to be up front and decide to take on the opposition and try what I can to offer up front and honest argument to the opposite. Because the amusing thing about us human beings. We are able to justify or re-contextualize anything and everything to wildly alter what we perceive as good or evil. A man hit a woman in the middle of the street after chasing after her. He's Evil. The woman was a murderer who had killed his brother in cold blood just five minutes ago. He's Good. She killed his brother because she was abused by the man's brother. He's Evil. But the man did not know anything about what his brother was doing and as far as he knew his brother was a good man who was selfless. It's Complicated. My usual viewpoint relating to the whole alignment viewpoint is that it's simpler to think of the intent of the author, in this case we are clearly following an anti-hero. After that, it is easier to also think of the nature of humans, humans can do both good and evil acts, extremes in both sides, but ultimately usually we do things for our own benefit or to feel good about ourselves. Many people do extreme thing under the guise of righteousness and doing good to the world, but often time it is clear they are doing so to feel good about themselves or their self image as well, or pride to maintain said self image. In these cases, it is simpler to denote everyone's base nature, which is Neutral. And from there we pivot back and forth between doing Good or Evil. But our standard state is Neutral. In that aspect. Ainz is by nature Neutral. SImply Neutral. He pivots, some episodes he does chaotic good, some others he does lawful evil, in others he's just true neutral and a bystander observing others. So to reaffirm. Yes. I do believe that by default, Ainz is a True Neutral or Lawful Neutral type character.

Within it's walls, all sorts of races are already living in peace and it is having prosperous times and good trades with both the Empire and the Dwarven Kingdom. The domestic affairs of E-rantel and the Sorcerous Kingdom isn't being really touched on since it's part of the two volumes of the novel that were skipped (which as someone else stated is being made into a movie, last we heard of any news of that was last year, it's still in development). The Anime skips an entire arc that is why some things don't make sense. Like how Ains nation defeated Jaldabaoth and rescued another country and how the prince did not want to meet with their diplomats (dicussion between prince and pincess in the beginning in the episode). I won't spoil anything but here is what you should know going into this arc: The nation of darkness has an new ally which is in need of help so the nation of darkness is sending provisions. These provisions have to go through the Re-Estize Kingdome where Albedo and Demiurge where planning to use Phillip for an civil war so that the nation of darkness could invade and "save" the citicens. Also the "Holy Kingdom" in need of aid is not the Theocracy with their scriptures. It is a completely new country which we did not see before. It is called the Holy Oak Kingdom or the Roble Holy Kingdom depending on which translation is used. Also I believe next episode they will discuss a symbol on the declaration they got which belongs to the "Faceless Preacher". This also has to do with the skipped arc so you can ignore that for now.

Season 4 shows a lot more of Ainz internal dialogue, of course the books have 10 times more, but this season somehow humanizes Ainz more than season 1, when he was technically closer to his old self.

As much as I love Overlord, I’m sure you are aware, it goes by very fast. That is because the anime skips A LOT, to the point where you think you’ve missed something. So things like ‘demiurge’s farm’ is not full of ‘Bi-pedal sheep’ but humans from previous raids. Demiurge jokes in calling them Bi-pedal sheep’. The only people who know the joke are demiurge and albedo; ainz should known but didn’t understand the joke but albedo does.

The king is generally a pretty nice guy, but because he is too nice... his kingdom sort of fell apart. He lets his nobles do whatever they want so half of them are fighting for power against him, while the other half of corrupted. You have underground organizations running things from behind the scenes and overall the people are suffering pretty badly. Many of which pay to much in taxes are considering there is a food shortage... it doesn't look good. The Re-Estize kingdom fell very far behind, so much so that the Empire which is younger surpassed it in strength, magical knowledge, wealth, and so on.

As I said before the anime paints the king as far too good. He is as corrupt as the other nobles. He would rather sacrifice another ten or hundred thousand civilians like they do in war than accept the corrupt face of the nobles. To begin with the royal family was involved with the 8 fingers and before Renner the nobles and royalty were involved in human trafficking, drugs and all other sorts of ungood deeds. That is the reason why the theocracy decided to ploy the assassination of Gazef, without him the kingdom would have fallen to the empire fast and Nix could have quickly reworked the nations systems. The theocracy has one goal and that is to prevent humanity from going extinct which nearly happened more than once in the past. That is why they scheme behind the backs of the kingdoms. And despite them not having anything against Gazef himself, the kingdom was too far gone to be redeemed.

Can someone tell me what does that mean when he says "referee" ? Cause he said it several times and google trad gives me something that doesn't make sense in the situation where he use it. (don't know if that's exactly what he says but the subtitles show me that too)

A colloquialism meaning, "somethings not right here and there's a foul on the play." In other words an appeal to an authority to straighten out a situation.

Trying to get an honest unvarnished opinion out of this pack of yes men in Nazarick would be like pulling teeth except with them they would happily yank them out with pliers themselves..... Hilma Definitely gets definitely from Ainz-sama'sutopian ideals on labor relations. He absolutely does go out of his way to look out for those he considers "his people" The level of OOF that Philip has just entered into is that rarified strata only seen by folks Jar Jar Binks....

if you think ains is running this show and using his ideas let me quickly relieve you of that notion, ains only goes along with the flow, the plans do not come from him and unfortunately for the kingdom the people with the plan are very evil and even ains cant fight the plan now

This has to be one of my least favourite episodes. It doesn't convey the passing of time (Where an entire two volumes are skipped) and it then summarises 120+ pages in one episode. It completely skips over the further dialogue between the three barons, the isolated discussion of the other two barons, the formulation and completion of the plan, and the dialogue and backstory of the mercenary & co who were protecting the caravan and how, through a series of misunderstandings, managed to fumble the bag and let a group of nobodies rob the grain.
