I spent one very cold night in a quinzee with my dog, Hunter, near the ZEC Pontiac wilderness reserve in central Quebec. Please check out the night's account in "Overnight in a Quinzee in -35°C with Jokes to Keep us Warm"!
When I was younger, my friends and I would make igloos, quinzees and snowforts all winter long. We didn't know any better at the time, so we actually called both igloos and quinzees "igloos", even though the process for building them is quite different. More often than not, we'd end up with some sort of igloo-quinzee-snowfort hybrid -- a quingloort?! Either way, we always had a blast building them!
Since my own childhood, I've gone on to build a few quinzees and forts with my kids as they were growing up, but this was the first time I built one in the backcountry with the goal of spending a night in it. "Overnight in a Quinzee in -35°C with Jokes to Keep us Warm" is my account of that very cold, but ultimately very rewarding night.
I brought my older dog, Hunter, along for the trip, and while he loved being outdoors, he wasn't so sure about being in the quinzee! Once he realized that it was warmer inside than it was outside though, he seemed to settle in. We made it through the brutally cold night, with temperatures reaching -35°C with the windchill. The next morning, tired and chilly, we packed up and headed home, happy with our experience.
Join Hunter and I as we build the quinzee (well, I built it while Hunter "supervised"), told jokes to keep the cold at bay (super awesome Dad jokes!), and made a delicious "bushfood" meal over the open fire. It was great to get outside, practice some bushcraft skills and enjoy the fresh, arctic air. I'll definitely be doing this again sometime!
Unfortunately, due to the extreme cold overnight, the footage I took at bedtime didn't take. While filming, I noticed that the LCD display was showing blue pixels and no image, so I really didn't know if the footage would take. I tried using my iPhone instead so that I'd have backup footage, but it was too cold and wouldn't even turn on! Keeping my gear warm and operable is something I'll have to look into for my future adventures.
As always, I would love to hear your feedback as I'm counting on you all to let me know how I can improve my craft. I'm just getting started, so be patient, check back often, and please consider LIKING and SUBSCRIBING.
Cheers!
