Join me as I explore the great outdoors - everything from camping and hiking, to canoeing, backcountry travel and bushcraft. And when the season’s right, I even do some hunting, fishing and foraging! My adventures are a way to challenge myself and sometimes even re-learn skills that I haven’t used since my childhood, but whether I falter, fail or succeed, I’m always learning, growing, and looking forward to the next challenge!
Thanks for the video, I appreciate the attention to the trees. Haven't seen that in any other video though I find myself doing exactly the same when I'm hiking. I'll be at Fitzroy with my daughter for the first time next month, can't wait!
Found a log with a weird burned indentation, and decided to make a bird bath, planter, animal feeder, or like incense holder or something... Nine seconds in and what my log looked like is what yours looked like! Feel like I'm on the right path!! Now I need to make burn troughs and bowls for little watering and feeding areas for wildlife now.
It’s funny, I was thinking of doing another burn bowl but as a shallow bird bath! Glad to hear there’s someone else who thinks this would be a good idea. Thanks for watching my video and best of luck with your burn projects!
Hope you get around to that "second video" sometime (couldn't find it on your channel)?! Oh well...there seem to be a few others in the "side list' a little hungrier for subscriptions. "If a job is once begun, never leave it 'til it's done; be the labor great or small, do it well...or not at all."
Thanks for checking out the first video. And apologies for not getting the second one up yet - life has been hectic and I’ve had other priorities. Doing my best to get it up sometime soon.
Hey Eric, really liking the videos, as an aspiring outdoor creator myself, kudos to you. Would you say there is more white water on the upper section or the lower section below Mattice?
Hey Ivan, thanks very much for checking out the videos, I appreciate it! I haven't done the upper section yet -- that's in the works for next summer, likely. But the lower section had some great whitewater, including some longer sections and a decent a mix of Class I, II and III. Of course, we didn't get much snow this year, so unless it's a wet spring, water levels could be low so I'm not sure how that'll affect the river's whitewater. If you have any more questions, let me know, or hit me up on Instragam @ejb_greybeard.
Thanks James! What takeaways do you have? Just curious as it helps me determine what I’m doing right. I’m also open to constructive criticism, so if you’ve got tips & suggestions, fire away! I’m happy to do the same for your vids (though maybe we could do them via PM!)
Thanks so much James, I appreciate it! Let me know what you think of Episodes 2 & 3. And don’t worry, I’ve got your Moose Rut series lined up for viewing soon too and will be happy to share feedback 😁
Totally fascinating, gorgeous, inspirational. Absolutely wonderful! So nicely put together to tell the story of the trip. I love the drone video and also that you included plants and rocks. Your awe and enthusiasm comes through strongly - very enjoyable to watch!
I hope your wife liked it, the bowl looks really cool just like that already. Combined with a hefty piece of wood with a rounded edge this would probably also make a neat mortar and pesttle. I have never tried any of these methods but would starting your bowl from the side (going with the grain i guess?) help with preventing splits?
My wife loved it, even though I showed it to her before I was actually done LOL! I’m hoping to have the final product up on my RU-vid in the coming weeks. 🤞
Thankfully, the area was spared from any wildfire damage. We had a bit of smoke on a few days, and a campfire ban for the duration of the trip, but otherwise the area was ok.
Love, love, love this video! I'm old and can barely make it to the bathroom now. The doctors say after hip replacement, I'll be out in the woods hiking again. Maybe I can talk my son into taking me on this canoe trip. But until then, I really appreciate you videos! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the kind words, Patricia, I appreciate your support! I hope your hip replacement goes well and that you’re able to make it out onto the Missinaibi - it’s a beautiful river!
The tree in this video has very flexible branches and wood, they aren't hard and stiff, hard and stiff trees are very dangerous to have around your home because they don't sway in the wind as much, but if the winds carry very hard they don't have no choice but to snap. I recommend birch or oak, birch trees can't topple over due to their highly flexible wood, and oak trees have hard wood but they are very sturdy, i recommend live oak. Certain oaks can snap.
@@GreybeardAdventures I knew it wouldn't topple over because of that very sturdy base of the tree, it's always sad to see a tree you spent a long time with go down. I've never really seen maple trees blow over but see a few branches snap instead.
@@TBATG You're absolutely right, maples are very sturdy trees and generally lose some of their branches before ever toppling over. I'm glad our precious maple survived this one!
Oklahoma people are laughing. A derecho is a rare tornadic type of storm that expands at least 240 miles with sustained winds of 58 mph with gusts at tornado speeds
This is exactly what this was. We were lucky, this tree remained standing, but numerous neighbourhoods in the Ottawa area were decimated. We don’t get derechos or tornadoes very often here - not like Tornado Alley in the US - but they’re becoming far more common with climate change.
@@GreybeardAdventures true but why not say power of a storm instead? For a lot of people who are used to these type of storms this is a bit misleading. Glad yall were safe. It is a nice looking tree though.
But why not call it a derecho since that’s what Environment Canada and the various weather networks classed the phenomenon as? Just because my tree didn’t blow over doesn’t mean this wasn’t a derecho… I think we all too often expect crazy footage online nowadays, but my intent was just to show how insanely intense the wind blew but lasted less than 5 minutes.
We had far more trees like this until the derecho came through. We were lucky, this tree remained standing, but numerous neighbourhoods in the Ottawa area were decimated. We don’t get derechos or tornadoes very often here - not like Tornado Alley in the US - but they’re becoming far more common with climate change.
BAHAHAHAHAH I forgot Dan had a swim. Best part of the trip ;) Awesome story-telling, Eric. I will never forget how many darn FLIES there were at thunder falls!! I've never seen so many in my life.
Hahahaha, and I was the one who brought Dan on that swim! It was crazy how it went from clouds of mosquitoes and blackflies, to deer flies, to hordes of large harmless flies. I wonder if that's normal or the product of climate change? Thanks again for the kind words! :)
Eric that intro was fabulous! So many good memories tucked into this one. Those first rapids. The bugs. THAT STUPID THUNDERSTORM (I was so scared lmao). Dumping in sun rapids and you can see Lyra's look of "oh crap" as she gets stuck under the canoe lmao. That footage of Rob and Dan playing at the end was good enough to make me want to buy a drone (and the playful music with it was lovely) Nice job
Thanks so much for the kind words of support, Riley! It was definitely an awesome trip filled with so many incredible moments! Looking forward to the next big trip :)
We actually had a PFD for Lyra on this trip, but she proved that it was safer for her not to be wearing it on a whitewater river - on one of our dunks, she was able to swim under the gunnel of the toppled canoe and pop back up safely, whereas if she’d had her PFD on, she’d have been unable to do that.
Like when I watched part 1, I enjoyed every minute of this video. So impressive, what you all have done on this adventure! The filming and narrating is excellent, and the drone video adds so much. Unbelievably beautiful! Looking forward to part 3!
@@GreybeardAdventures it really is the best kind of learning experience for whitewater! You’ll be dancing around at Palmer next time like it’s nothing🙌
I’m not actually certain what brand the second one was. The owners, Rob & Deb, picked it up for cheap and made many homemade repairs to it. They did an excellent job though as it held up for the duration of the trip! Kudos to them for bringing along a solid boat 👍
You weren’t there, and I can assure you that while our tree survived, our neighbours weren’t so lucky. Many neighbourhoods in Ottawa were completely devastated by the impacts of the storm. No, this was NOT a weak storm.
Definitely lots of fun, Ron! Wavy Rapids was an eye-opener - it got me every time, but in looking back at the footage, I feel like I know where my faults were. Live & learn! I’m looking forward to getting back out in the water next summer and perfecting what I started this year 👊💥 Thanks for watching and I hope you’ll check out Part 3 when I get it out in the coming weeks. 😊
