In the heart of the Canadian wilderness, where the whispers of ancient forests blend with the symphony of flowing waters, a journey of unparalleled beauty awaits. Welcome to a realm of untamed grandeur, where time stands still, and nature's poetry is written in every ripple, every whisper of the wind.
This is the Missinaibi River, a liquid tapestry of epic landscapes, a canvas painted by the hand of Mother Nature herself.
Join me and four new friends for Part 1 of this epic 10-day, 200km backcountry canoe trip on a historic northern Ontario river. Our canoe trip down the Missinaibi is not without its unique features and challenges. As we paddle through its pristine wilderness, we'll face the exhilarating test of covering long distances, our arms becoming our compass in the untamed landscape. The river, with its playful twists and turns, challenges us with exhilarating whitewater rapids that demand our utmost focus and teamwork (and for me, this would be only my third time ever running whitewater in a canoe!) Add to this the historic wildfire season across much of the country and a province-wide fire ban, and you're starting to get a sense of what this backcountry canoe trip is all about!
After an 11-hour drive turned into a 17-hour day, with car troubles and forestry road navigation issues delaying us, we pulled into Missinaibi River Provincial Park shortly after midnight. The next morning, on Day 1 of our 10-day backcountry canoe trip, we set about organizing our gear and traversing Lake Missinaibi, departing from Barclay Bay, stopping for lunch on an island, and continuing on to a campsite just below Quittagene Rapids.
Day 2 brought us from Quittagene through Cedar Rapids, Long Rapids and Sun Rapids before reaching our campsite for the night at Barrel Rapids.
On Day 3, we departed Barrel Rapids with our sights set on exploring the abandoned rail town of Peterbell. The flatwater of this stretch of the Missinaibi was long and unchanging, so when we arrived at the rail line, it was a welcome break from the monotony of the previous hours. We checked out some of the old rail features, found some relics along the riverbanks, then carried on to the expansive Peterbell Marsh, where we found a a terrific spot to take our lunch break on a rocky outcrop. One of the most impressive features of the marsh is getting to see it from the air! My drone was able to capture some remarkable aerial footage! We would continue on from there to end the day at Swamp Rapids.
I hope you enjoy Part 1 of my Missinaibi series, and please don't forget to LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT, and HIT THAT BELL for future updates, including Parts 2 and 3 of the series!
