I go over over seating your yard, and the methodology of overseeding that gets the best results. I go over types of grass you can put in your yard. Advantages and disadvantages to each type. Recommendations of the best seed for each grass type. How to water and fertilize once you have seeded.

Thank you again for a very thorough explanation into the process of over seeding. I have three questions. Firstly, I have a zone that's a bit under 1,000 sq ft to over seed this upcoming fall. Which tool and process do you recommend I use to effectively spread the sand top dressing for such a small area? Using a self-propelled top dressing tool is not available in my area. Secondly, can I use a simple rake to essentially de-thatch that area once I complete my "low" mowing step? Thirdly, can I apply a peat moss cover over the seed to maintain moisture and also protect the seed from the birds feasting on it?

A few times when my Topdressor broke down I had to topdress greens using a large shovel. Just throwing it on as evenly as possible. It's a little trickier on turf that is not maintained at 3/16 of an inch or less but doable. That likely will be your best bet. Using a stiff rake would be fine to expose the soil in the areas where the turf is really thin. I have found place seed when it's really dry and get the seed as deep into the turf canopy (or what's left of it) as you can. Keep it moist particularly if it's ryegrass or tall fescue which germinates as early as 7 days to a max of 14. You should be fine. Tell what I do with small areas ...bags the clippings from the healthy parts of the yard and use them as your hay/mulch over the area. I am reluctant to use mulch or peat moss because of a layering effect it can cause with your soil. It can stay at the soil surface and lead to a reduction in water percolation into the soil. I have put seed down and put some sand on top as well. Just a lite coating. Just enough to cover the seed to keep moisture in as well. That is your goal keep moisture in. Topdressing you either want to use the same soil size or a coarser size particle to prevent the layering effect.

Austin tx here. Large bare spots where poa annua and clover died off this summer. At this point in the game is it more important to get seed down for roots in the ground or just focus on putting down preemergent un November to stop the POA from coimg back. When it rains it dumps hard here so worried about having large spots of bare soil washing away.

Check out my pre-emergent video. I go over program I used in the Carolinas. I'm a big advocate of putting down a dormant round up application sometime in February just to clean things up then follow up with a pre-emergent herbicide of your choice. Unless you're in southern Texas or Florida, it's just too late to seed Bermuda.
