Yes!!! Very close. Great level matching. Like you were saying in the percentile range. Sounds like 1-2 % and with routing into another piece of analog gear it would be virtually indistinguishable. I just bought the FMR RNC1337 500 series and I get the same feel with the brightness and heft. Those units are amazing and a secret way to get a versatile SSL style compressor both Channel and Bus thats better than any clone you can buy except for maybe the Alan Smart C2 but at 550 for the pair!

Many thanks for the vid. Just wondering if the extended version of the Softube Overstayer MAS could be used to roll off some of the brightness and boost some of the lower mids to get closer to the hardware? That would make an interesting vid.

Yes it can and I think that extended version sounds better and has more depth when you tweak what that saturator "hears" and will saturate more so I typically send less top end and lows into Softbue Overstayer extended using those dials and saturate only upper bass, mids and highs. It's one of my go to saturators in the box that actually always help the music when you tailor it for particular sound you want.

I hear the same to varying degrees on software vs Hardware. The software will have more features and functions. The hardware always sounds more fleshed out or 3D if you like. The extended version sounds better

I have a pair of RND 542’s and I love what they do on my mixbus. I’m considering selling them for the Overstayer MAS 2 because I don’t use any other 500 series modules besides the 542’s. I would like to ditch the 500 setup completely if possible but I’m unsure how the MAS compares? Can it sound similar to the 542’s? I’m not looking for crazy distortion, just nice tape saturation that adds some girth to mixes in a musical way and has the soft clipping to boost perceived level of the tracks

I also have the 542. I use the MAS on the mix buss. It’s my favorite saturator for subtle stuff. They don’t sound alike though.

I think I managed to get the software to sound pretty close to your hardware unit by using a bit of analog chain before it hits the Softube Overstayer plug. I sum my tracks into my allen & heath zed R16->Gssl Bus Compressor and then I hit overstayer when it gets back into the DAW. I guess the hardware unit would certainly replace the summing part of this chain, but I still think i got it as close as possible given the gear I have at my disposal. Excellent comparison, dude! Was looking forward to someone actually doing a side by side with the real thing!

plugin will never sound identical because two hardware will always sound different and developer don't emulate the crosstalk that hardware does since engineer consider it to be a very big problem specially with phase.

Listening on Neumann cans. Plugin sounds flatter. HW more rich / 3D / punchier esp in the low end. SW still 100% worth it for all the reasons, but the HW just has that magic. Fairly obvious in the skinny puppy -esque sample on the kicks. If im hearing it with RU-vid compression, would def be curious to hear A/Bs at the end via WAV. Thanks for the comparison!!
