Just curious ... What are your settings for the Overstayer Mas?

@@RasanBMusic EQs and filters are off, Input at 8 (three o'clock), mix at 50%, Dual and Emphasis engaged and 2nd-harmonics off. Output at 4 - depending on the following gear, which is in my case an Overstayer Stereo Voltage Control. This Overstayer pair often sits on my mixbuss or on a guitar/vocal/synth buss (depending on the music).

It doesn't. Nothing sounds like the 76, but you don't use that on a mix. The type of saturations are completely different between these two, the 76 is a saturation you hear more clearly, you can also push more and it's also basically a 3 bands eq plus, it has multiband stereo widener, but again, it's not a 2bus/mix unit

@@RasanBMusic I changes all the time. I tend to dial it in with a bit too much audible distortion and then clean it up with the mix and dial it down from there. I found it easier to go too far and trim back than when I tried slowing adding harmonics.

Eh.. not really, altho they are similar, and in some cases maybe swappable, the big difference (for .e) is that the VSM3and HG plug-in are extremely underwhelming. I have the VSM3 for sale for $10 lol. VSM is an harmonics generator, it adds a lot, many times is way too heavy handed even at low settings, tweaky but the plug-in sounds very hard to me. HG-2 is a tube unit, the hw sounds good, plugin, not so much. This is the more similar to this but, tubes are different, altho you can get more similar results to this, it's not as smooth.

@@mixbustv Man , I was trying several plugins to find an alternative for the M.A.S all day long. And I found that the closest one was Kelvin by tone projects. Am I crazy ? XD . David , it would be really cool if you make a video giving your best advice for people like me that are " pluginholic " ? If you know what I mean .Engineers are always looking for something better for their projects but ...how to know how to live with the fact that we are always buying something new and expensive most of the time ? I mean, a waveform is a waveform. How it got there doesn't really matter, just the end result. Digital clipping with oversampling can sound pretty similar.

Plugins are not analog, they will never be.

@@RasanBMusic It varies from mix to mix - the Mas comes at the very end of my 2 bus chain - typically after several other stages of saturation - Neve summing mixer busses have red/blue silk, Neve tape saturation modules (with more silk if desired), Neve master bus processor - again with more silk saturation etc etc. I just love saturation - but also tend to layer it using several pieces of gear during tracking/mixing - I’m convinced it provides a better end result that is not only more dense/impactful but also more natural sounding then it would be if I slammed the source material with one particular unit. I use the MAS gently and often with less than 100% mix - awesome unit - plugin sounds pretty good but I’ll never give up the hardware

depends what you include in the assessment. Plugin sound better? Probably not, but if you take into consideration all of the addition features plus unlimited uses and instant recall

I have 2 Fatso's and no overstayer. But the Fatso is primarily a compressor WITH saturation, Over is a saturator. If I needed a saturator only I'd get the Over. But I don't cause I have others so

@@mixbustv 😏 Still, most plugins have added functionalities their hardware versions don't have. And I think, as an example, with Dynamic Eq and Fabfilter's multiple functionalities possibilities, we are way beyond what hardware Eq can do. Same goes with compressors and limiters. I really wonder what are the benefits from a single hardware unit at $ 3000 vs a quality $ 200 plugin emulation that you can use on 10 channels simultaneously. In a real full pro mix situation, can we pinpoint the difference between the original, assuming it is in top shape, and its best digital counterpart ? Or isn't the mix with plugins benefiting from the multiple channel treatment ? Don't get me wrong, I am a 60 yo tech mixing on an API Legacyplus , Barefoot speakers and all the gear you can get...😏

Because everyone (who follows my channel) knows what I think about how close plugins are to the hardware. Or they can just take a look at my studio and make an educated guess, unless they think I just like to throw money at gear because I like lights. At the same time, I don't change with the wind and if you take a look at my reviews of their Germanium for example, I felt that that one was close enough to the hardware (when I interested in getting one), same for at least one other of their plugins. I made a video called "the analog vs digital has to stop", 90% of the people agrees that analog is better, 10% scream and shout that it's the same, I am not interested in reopening the debate on every video as in that video I stated clearly where I (and 29759393763792 pro engineer) stand, and also that you can make good sounding tracks with only plug-ins, it is all about context, what's your profession? If you're s mix engineer it's one thing, if you're a hair dresser or a banker making music for yourself, it's another. I've always been very consistent and coherent with my thoughts on the matter.

I’m not suggesting that I think you change with the wind, you absolutely say it like it is, and that’s what I love and can count on about your channel! I know you say the comparisons need to stop, but here we are doing a comparison that this plugin is like the hardware with more features. (Im not arguing with you I think that’s a great thing! Thank you!) I follow your channel because if you say it’s within 5% then I can gauge my expectation and I appreciate that. Or if you say what’s different, thank you! I love your comparisons. But when you lead with it doesn’t matter how close it is to the hardware for the benefit of the folks who enjoy that debate, I think it’s unfortunate. Because the whole reason you / we are drawn to “this” or the Germanium in the first place is because it looks like a Germanium, it says Germanium, but if it sounds like a Germanium doesn’t matter? I’m not debating if I think it does or not within any kind of margin because I hadn’t even tried the thing yet, but I know you give a damn if it does and I really trust your opinion. I have all of waves, many of UA’s, all the Fabfilter mixing tools and much more. Pertaining to hobby vs work I produced a song on a Grammy nominated album by the Roots over 7 years ago. Not a hobby. But what I’ve found is great companies today have awesome plugins cheap at times. Softube prices are trash in today’s market. The song I produced on that Roots album in my college dorm on a wack Dell lab top is “Right On.”

@@mixbustv this is a pretty wack take David. It's not about affording the $200, it's about the perceived value. I make most of my money from sound and video production (since the mid 90s), and have invested in 80% of Softube's stuff already. I paid $150 for each of Soothe and Gullfoss, Pro-Q3, $250 on Soundtoys, I buy almost anything Arturia drops, and own plenty of plugs from other companies... I grew out of stock plugs years ago. Plus DAW, mics, interfaces, synths, computer... there's always something that needs an upgrade, but it needs to be prioritised. Not to mention living costs, stocks, travel. Has zero to do with whether I take audio production seriously or not, it's what the work calls for. Overstayer sounds great - like all Softube plugs do - and yeah, like Pokemon I'm gonna wanna catch them all, so it's only a matter of time. But I'll wait till they offer me a more juicy discount.
