There are a few dozen different ways to bring about universal coverage. Universal coverage is NOT a public option. Universal coverage means we cover 100% of the population. Medicare 4 all is universal coverage. Any other system that covers the entire population is universal coverage.

In canada we can go to any hospital and get free tests. Ps: heres a glimpse into Canadian taxes and health care contributions. My husband made 43000 and paid 6300 in taxes. Im disabled(I dont collect disability or am on any type of government funded income)We just filed our taxes and we got back 2800 dollars. In 2019 we were able to go.at any time to any hospital and seek healthcare. We also have health insurance through employment but the only thing that helps is the cost of prescription drugs(also depends because there are programs that make sure people with diabetes etc will always have access to meds, employee insured or not). So it can he done and you dont have to go bankrupt

Government should mandate what is covered by all insurers in basic coverage, in a 1st level improved package, and a 2nd level improved package with the very luxury treatment items to be included in packages free to be composed by the insurers 2. Each insurer must be mandated to offer their programs across the entire US. No more dividing up the country between insurers. This will ensure competition between insurers which will force them to drive down prices. People will no longer be limited in choosing between only two providers or even less. With standard composition of coverage they also only need to look at prices. 3. The government will cap the deductibles to a low level ($200-$400 per annum) so most people should be okay if they get sick. 4. All insurers should create an emergency fund to offset losses they may incur for providing treatment to those unable to pay 5. Government will set the prices of each treatment provided by the medical profession so there will no longer be need to negotiate with each medical professional... patients can then go to any medical facility and the treatment will be payed for 6. Procedures like a Cesarean delivery, plastic surgery, circumcision and such will only be covered when there is a medical necessity. Elective procedures will have to be paid for by the patient him/herself 7. Hospitals and pharmacies will be allowed to shop on the open market for drugs and will be allowed to choose generic variants to drive down prices. Most drugs is good, but some drugs will be excellent but much more expensive. The insurer will only be mandated to cover the generic, well-performing drug. If a patient demands the excellent drug he/she will have to pay the difference themselves 8. Insurers will no longer be allowed to provide collective healthcare against reduced prices; Also no difference between customers to cherry-pick the young and healthy as preferred clients. Everyone will be charged the same for the same package and everyone MUST be accepted that requests coverage. Healthcare is a complex issue but aforementioned points could be a good starting point. MediCare for all, no matter how sympathetic sounding, will not work. It will be run by civil servants with no motivation to improve and the tax-bill will be much higher without actually improving anything.

And what are you gonna do about wages in healthcare? Because they are much lower in all.other advanced countries? Most people can't afford healthcare and if you get rid of private insurance we'll still be paying 80% more instead of 100% more unless the gov renegotiates prices. And loads of people work in healthcare now. How can.you get that through? Bc healthcare here is one giant ripoff.

@@joehoang4826 of course the prices will change. No more price gouging on stuff like insulin and epipens which cost about $2 to make and the corporations charge patients hundreds for them. Also, medics will probably make less money like they do in other countries. But this is part of why this is so complicated. This is also why all the people that want single payer healthcare for all also want free college. Doctors need to charge a lot because they pay a lot for their degrees and their malpractice insurance and licensing and certifications. All that would need to be changed and streamlined.

acidfromhell Prices with Medicare for all will go down. In theory then the gov has a lot of power to negotiate prices. But the medical lobby is very powerful and so many people now work in healthcare. We never had this many people working in health care. And even if you don't, many have family that do. So lowering their wages would cause problems even though they should

A lot of union people have amazing plans. My daughter was a teamster for a while, and her insurance was much better than anything her father or I ever got as computer programmers.
