I was called into the pre-draft back when we still had conscription in Sweden. Physique test, IQ test, physical, interview, the whole shebang. The interview with the recruiter was the final hurdle before going to basic training. The first thing he asks me is "do you want to do this?" I told him "no, not really" and he said "OK, I'll just put you in the reserves then" and sent me home. One of the best days of my life, to be honest.
Well, you all aren't beholden to a corrupt and massive military industrial complex, and your politicians aren't shaking their dicks at every other country on the planet, so...makes sense that's the mentality they had.
I look at a 1971 photo, 35 ofareus from colleges, universities in the US, training in FT Knox, going through ROTC because I was otherwise to be drafted. 8/9 of us, didn't want to be there, but made a choice, and worked as hard as any volunteer. Once in a foxhole, politics disapear fast, and you are committed to the mission and your buddies with you.. My class got lucky, draft ended and most of us didn't go all the way to be commissioned, offered honorable discharges. In Ft Knox, I bunked with people all over the US, we had common purpose, to learn, and survive when we graduated, to be sent to Vietnam. My son served in Iraq. So I have no negatives on the military. The draft is a great consolidator of American values and common purpose, and teaches skills to those without an education. Brian R

If we can automatically register people for the draft, we can certainly automatically register people for to vote. This country’s priorities are completely messed up.
I don't think that's what he meant. Viet Nam was a wildly unjust and unpopular war. Being against that war and draft is not the same as fighting for your country when it's just and necessary -- in clear and necessary defense. Viet Nam was an offensive action by the u.s. that turned into an unwinnable quagmire early on and lasted unjustifiably way too long. The kind of military industrial complex fueled problem that Eisenhower warned about.

Veteran here too - that’s why we have a professional force now and no draft since Vietnam - but they are talking about selective service registration and in case of a catastrophic war (conventional) we may need bodies even if just doing REMF stuff. So why wouldn’t a woman be required to- they want everything equal.
@jamesinFL yeah, in a real huge war, like beyond even Vietnam scale, we HAVE to draft. You wouldn't have enough people signing up. And in reality, no one wants to be there. Even the volunteers. I'm pro-draft. But I think draft should be service, which may include the military. No exceptions. That means, everyone has to serve including kids who have a billionaire daddy. If that happened, there would be less wars.
Anyone in this country that has to live paycheck to paycheck or works at 40-hour week and has to live in their car would be a fool to serve a day in defense of this country

There was a draft in WWII. Our National Museum states, " On September 16, 1940, the United States instituted the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft." 50 million registered and 10 million were drafted by 1945.

Agree, as a retired service member, Canadian military, 1967-96… volunteers are the way to go. A nation will get volunteers as long as it respects the lives of those who serve. Respect comes via choosing fights for just causes & equips a military to survive & win.

During WWII, the military actually suspended volunteer enlistments because the greatest need was in the infantry, yet that was not the general “choice” of the volunteer.
Hey Tulsi, I’m a Vietnam era Vet that was drafted and there were a lot of GI’s in the Vietnam war that were drafted and didn’t want to be there and they saved their buddies life when it counted. Your comment about not wanting to be with another GI that didn’t want to be there because you couldn’t count on them is a disgusting thing to say.
My dad was a Vietnam vet who literally in the middle of a battle had a guy drop on the ground and go into a fetal position because he didn't want to be there. My dad had to kick him out of the way because he was blocking a passageway to get out. Yes, many people who are forced to do a job can still do it well. But there are still plenty who don't. I would rather prevent a situation that has you guessing whether the person your life depends on will end up being the GIs that you knew or the GI that my dad had to kick to prevent everyone else from dying.
Did they make guys go to war because they didn’t have enough males volunteering to be in the military? I wasn’t even born yet, but my dad was in school and I know that he had to go to Vietnam. Absolutely agree! I want religion staying out of government, and government staying staying out of religion, and the same with schools which are funded and run by a government guided, and defined, by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution ("Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."). I am an observant Christian, who does his best every moment to follow the teachings and example of Christ, and I strongly believe that FAITH (which is NOT the same as RELIGION) should be taught in the home primarily, and if you so choose, in a place of worship, secondarily.
I used to agree. Then I saw the darkness the left has embraced, particularly over the last few years. I now realize we all have a choice: a world with God and a world without. I choose the world with God, because without Him, we find substitutes and they’re never good.
Let me ask, where does your basis of what is right or wrong come from? Western civilization gets our morals from Christianity already. You should acknowledge that.

Most wars America was involved in weren't started by America. WWI & II, Korea War, Vietnam, Kosovo, Syria, Libya, 1. Gulf War and the Ukraine War & GAZA-War weren't started by America.
@craigs.6642 one is he said the US didn't start the Ukraine war. On one hand he is right, but if you know anything about the history of Russia following the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the agreement we made with them in accordance to not allow Nato to expand any further east, which of course was not honored, there's quite a valid argument to made that we provoked them into this war, especially considering the many peace deals Russia was willing to come to the table for before, during, and still currently. Ukraine was willing to sign that first treaty before the war broke out until the US convinced the UK to send Boris Johnson to urge Zelenskyy not to sign. And our media and Corn Pop said over and over again how this incursion was "unprovoked." Now Joe is trying to convince us that Russia won't stop with Ukraine, but will try to keep expanding their territory, lol. All the while we are provoking them even more in a deadly contest that could very well end us all in a nuclear Armageddon. Another thing Maher won't admit is the genocide in Gaza.
My first born son turns 18 in December. I am terrified. Fuck these politicians signing up my boy for their wars. These bullshit wars. I just can’t believe we’re still doing this shit.
The next big war that happens will quickly turn nuclear. In that case, a draft isn't going to make a difference one way or another. The bond between service members somehow being weaker if they were drafted, is so asinine. Once human beings are put in a war situation, the bond will automatically be there. Whether one was drafted or volunteered. Thats just how human psychology works. Same reason that Platoon leaders make everyone do pushups if one person is at fault. They don't separate them from 'drafted' and 'volunteered' before giving out the punishment.
Exactly - both sides of the American Civil War ended up using the draft, the United States used a draft upon entry into WWI, and beginning in September 1940, the US had its first "peacetime" draft as it prepared for WWII...and then kept the draft for Korea and Vietnam. Whether we can ever expect a war of such a magnitude to require millions of Americans under arms is a conversation topic - but that these three educated adults couldn't put a draft in context is...well...that...
