In this episode of Handloader TV, after a year of testing and evaluation we overview the 5.56 Nato/223 Remington cartridges, discuss the differences in these two cartridges and what it means practically for the shooter and handloader. We also review and compare two different rifles which are spin offs from the WWSD project from Forgotten Weapons and InRange TV.

In an AR 15 With a 1 in 8” or 1 in 7” barrel I have had my best results with CFE 223 or AA2520 with a 69 grain SMK bullet, the 52grain Amax has also been a surprisingly good bullet. I have Barrel lengths between 16” and 20” . For Primers I stick with CCI 400 or he AR specific thicker primers if I can get them. Brass is always Lake City trimmed to minimum. The 69 grain bullet has been extremely consistent between rifles.

A geissele SSA-E trigger would make a big difference in your groups IMO. Still some good shooting and very nice rifles. This is some interesting content, thanks for sharing.👏🏻👏🏻

I think there were a couple of factors that could have been benifical, having a higher magnification optic on the 16" barreled rifle, a better trigger in the 20" rifle. The Timney in the 16" gun was very very nice though and I have no complaints about that one. The 20" gun on the other hand certainly could have used a better trigger! Geissele does make a fantastic trigger as well I have a couple of them in other rifles. I appreciate the kind words and you taking the time to watch and comment. We certainly do things a little differently we show the results of testing and let you decide for yourself I think that is really important. --Jeremiah

Nice review and some fine load data. it is amazing what can be done with modern materials. I would have liked to have seen a traditional bolt action varmint rifle in the mix.

Thank you very much we thought folks would like the comparison between the the 16" and 20" barrel, It is pretty amazing what can be done, the accuracy was even better than I expected out of an AR-15. I do have plans to cover the 223 Remington with traditional style rifle with a wood stock or maybe even a budget rifle like the Ruger American Predator. So it's in the works it's just a little ways out! Thanks for the feedback we greatly appreciate it and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

I know they are cranking it out as quick as they can keep an eye on their website they sell out quick, they also have their 223 Remington cases which would work just fine as well they'll just have slightly different case capacities. @Handloader TV Yes sir! Love the barrels proof research puts out. I also love what ballistic advantage and faxon is doing for the budget folks. That's what I run and I absolutely love the accuracy when you develop a perfect recipe! 👍

@@Gonzo81 They really are impressive barrels with impressive qualities and accuracy behind each one, they have been a go to for me for a long time. I have a couple barrels from Faxon and Ballistic advantage in particular the ballistic advantage I have shoots very well, it is a bull barrel in 6.5 CR and is capable of consistent sub MOA groups with a good load. I agree in full there is nothing more satisfying than finding THE load for your rifle! It is what keeps us all coming back and testing. Good shooting and happy handloading! --Jeremiah

Thanks for making this video. I have two WWSD rifles, one is a stock upper/lower, the other is a build. When you were shooting I kept hearing a noise that would continue until your trigger reset. Was this the buffer spring?

I've seen some carbon fiber barrels on ARs experience zero shift at competitions. The group opens up and zero shift occurs, and shooting the rest of the match becomes difficult. If I were putting more than a 30 round mag at a time through the gun, I would not get a CF barrel. Great video, however! I just wanted to voice my own experience.

semi automatics like the AR15 doesn't run at higher pressures, do they? loading manuals list lower pressure loads too.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV Год назад
So yes and no, Pressures are established by CIP, SAAMI and even NATO in some instances. In this video we loaded to CIP pressure levels which are actually higher than SAAMI pressure levels. Pressures are set by various organizations and not really the rifle itself. Many rifles and handguns can handle more pressure than what the standard is but essentially the pressures are set for cartridges themselves and not the firearms themselves. I hope that makes sense if you have any further questions don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah
@reloadingfun
@reloadingfun Год назад
@HandloaderTV I understand saami and cip. in the video, you said the ar15 operates at higher pressures, which is contrary to what the loading manuals list. that is what I was getting at.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV Год назад
@@reloadingfun At 2:04 we discuss the differences in chamber pressure and cartridges from various organizations and the differences between 5.56 Nato, SAAMI 223 Remington and CIP 223 Remington. The AR-15 itself when chambered for the 223 Wylde, or 5.56 Nato can certainly operate at those higher pressure standards such as 62,000 ish PSI from CIP. If a loading manual lists the SAAMI designation for 223 Remington such as Hodgon does for a lot of their 223 data then the pressure is set at 55K PSI and they don't go above that even though many rifles can handle it. They do that over fear of jamming a bullet into the rifling and increasing chamber pressures. I don't think I ever said the AR-15 operates at higher pressures. I did say the 5.56 Nato and the CIP version of 223 Remington have higher pressure standards than SAAMI but that is entirely true. The AR-15 can safely handle the highest pressure standard out there for .223 Remington or 5.56 Nato which is roughly 62K PSI. I say all of this with the most kindness possible and hopefully that all makes sense! If you are still confused I would be happy to explain further and perhaps you could paste the time stamp of what part of the video you are referencing as well. Thank you for commenting and taking the time to watch! --Jeremiah
@katana258
@katana258 8 месяцев назад
so what is the proof load of 223 .. how does a 223 send same weight head as fast as a 556 .??
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 8 месяцев назад
If memory serves me correctly proof pressure for 223 Remington per SAAMI is at 78,500 PSI for 5.56 NATO it should be about 77,958 PSI. Some manufacturers are likely loading 223 Remington to CIP or NATO pressure levels in order to achieve equal maximum velocity in 223 Rem vs 5.56 Nato. As discussed in the video there is a lot of confusion over the differences but case dimensions are essentially the same and variance comes from lot to lot and different manufacturers specs. I hope that makes sense, if you have any further questions don't hesitate to reach out! --Jeremiah

Are we really specifying that they are both .223 and 5.56 like this is 2009?
@HandloaderTV

It is amazing that this is still a point of confusion and from a technical aspect you would be amazed how many people still get that wrong when it comes to the difference between the two cartridges from a technical aspect. Thank you for taking the time to watch and to comment! --Jeremiah
