The last guy reminds of the once a week "play nights" we have in our student dorm. Its a community room with a kicker table and table tennis aswell as a couple of couches and a fridge. Its mostly meant as a chill way to connect with peers and have a way to meet new people. But theres this small group of players who will absolutely tryhard against anyone. It doesnt matter if its a first timer who has never even played those games before, they will literally curb stomp them. I ruins the fun for most people that arent them and because they are way more experienced they basically win everytime... Its the main reason why I now mostly sit on the couch and talk instead of play, which was supposed to be the whole point.

As someone who plays pretty hard in QP, that dude was extra wrong. Even I recognize that QP is the casual mode that isn't competitive and shouldn't be expected to be taken too seriously lol.

Didn't Blizard find out years ago with WoW that rewards are better than punishment for incentivizing player behavior? Why not boost the rewards for consecutive play so that it means something to go more than two games in a row without leaving. Also, if they want to make it so leaving a game early doesn't almost instantly decide it why don't they have the backfill players come in with the ult charge of the people who left?

When it comes to the "it's quick play" conversation, I sit in the middle. When I play qp, I don't care if we win or lose, I just wanna have fun. However, if my teammates are lobotomy patients, particularly when it's the tank, and it ends up being a 4 or 3 v 5, that's not fun. That is me dying over and over again for 5 mins without feeling like I'm accomplishing anything. And considering it is qp, this happens quite a bit. Maybe they are playing Winton into reaper, or hog into ana. But it only annoys me when it ends up ruining my whole game

As someone who takes quickplay seriously (mainly because 1: I'm too shit to climb past low plat and 2: iIhave a life) that dude was insanely wrong. Yes you CAN take it seriously, but unless someone's actively trying to ruin the experience for other people (throwing/griefing) there is no reason you should have expectations for how others play. It's a video game, and playing competitively in quickplay isn't going to get you anywhere anyway. You want an authentic competitive experience? Get good at the game and hold scrims. Not even comp has a fully competitive experience unless you're in the top 1% queues, and if you're someone who flames random people in quickplay of all things I know for SURE you aren't good enough to get there.

The being afraid of losing comp spoke to me. It really helped me understand why I take norms in league so seriously. Thank you.

I said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m not gonna rage at someone if they’re not doing well in quick play, but I hate when someone just kind of sees quickplay as a game mode that should not matter to people and people shouldn’t care to win. I play almost exclusively quickplay because I have kids and I like to be able to leave a match and not punish my teammates and get punished myself if my kids need me. But that doesn’t mean that because it’s quickplay that I should be the one that gets shoved aside when it comes to whether or not you should care about the game mode. It’s almost exclusively what I play and I still wanna win. It’s an objective game and I don’t think it’s right for someone to completely discount that because they have the luxury of playing comp whenever they want. Now, it’s clearly not black-and-white, but I think it’s unhealthy and toxic to say that quick play is just for people to goof off and someone can’t care about winning in quick play. I feel like as long as you don’t rage at your teammates, you’re still allowed to ask them to try.

I agree with Flats on the whole “Quick Play” thing, except for being okay with people leaving constantly. Like I’m not saying you should get banned or whatever, but it’s annoying when the second we lose a teamfight or somebody gets killed in the first 10-15 seconds, there’s a 99% chance you’re going to be down a teammate, if not several, while the game finds somebody else to join. Like I don’t remember ever finishing a Quick Play game with the same people on my team that were with me when the game started. There’s always at LEAST 1-2 people that joined in after somebody left, and yeah it’s not exactly the end of the world if somebody leaves since it usually finds somebody else, but it still takes time to do that. Like say you’re defending on payload and you’re at the first point, and then your Tank decides to leave for whatever reason. Even if somebody immediately joins, you still have to wait for them to load in, pick a hero, and then walk all the way from spawn to wherever you’re team is holding, which can easily leave your team without a Tank for 30-45 seconds. In Overwatch that’s enough time for the enemy team to roll through you, and get close to, if not capture the first point. It’s not fun when you constantly lose games because of people randomly deciding to leave, and I wouldn’t be complaining about it if it wasn’t EVERY. SINGLE. GAME.

There's been like 3 times in my entire 2,900 hour overwatch career that I've ever noticed that someone in my quick play was doing bad. HeII, I barely even notice when someone leaves. Although I think we do need a practice mode where it mimics comp completely, just so we can get the longer two round experience without having to worry about playing comp.

I think the main reason so many people want teammates to tryhard in QP instead of just playing comp is mostly for two reasons : 1. Even if you want to win, you don't feel as annoyed when you loose in QP because you don't think about your rank going down (which is even more frustrating when you loose because you're teammates were bad while you gave everything). But you still want to win. 2. Tryharding in QP can be fun because it allows you to play the character you want even tho he's not meta, well designed for the map you are or without too much counter pick from the enemy, what matter is that you and your team are pushing their character to their best. Tryharding in comp on the other head simply mean "Do everything to rank up" which mean you are supposed to play the meta, adapt your playstyle to each map and be ready to get counter swap every ten seconds (btw i hope you like to play with/against mauga cause that's the only thing comp offer right now.) All those things make comp pretty boring and turn it for many people into a place where you just go to get the rank you think you deserve and never touch it again.

If you want to try hard and win you play competitive, if you want to goof around and chill then you play arcade, if you want to play the game as intended with no pressure to win then you play quickplay. It obvious that many players get way too sweaty in quickplay but that doesn't mean you shouldn't put any effort into the match. I don't mind when players have bad games, practice new heroes, or experiment in their quickplay matches, but in my opinion there's still an obligation to put some effort in. There are three game modes that fit what most people want, it really shouldn't be that hard to understand.

Honestly, the part about kiting is so funny because they kited out rammatras ult to run out, and in lower ranks his ult is just so strong because people dont disengage or disengage wrong the whole time

My take on why people is very competitive in qp is just there is no other direct goals other than wining in qp. I would say throwing in a few very fun qp-exclusive maps with lots of map interactions, random events for qp players to queue in from time to time is a good option. Like a PvPvE map similar to the call of the beast or something like the halloween events in tf2 that stops everyone in the middle of the fight and a boss appear. It will clearly separate what comp and qp is. Another way I can think of is something similar to the 3 loot boxes per week in ow1. Maybe just pull the existing voice lines, spray etc. and make a reward system that has a exp counters for things like matches done as some general and serious stats and also some small stats like shots fired, effects caused, abilities used. It will implied that a lot of the players in qp are just there for the rewards and not about the match in general. The core idea is just distracting players from try hards.

I agree that QP is where you go to learn new characters, completely agree… BUT what IS annoying is having a person not try at all and forcing every team fight in a TEAM game be a 4v5 or 3v5… yes it’s casual and yes theres no consequences, but it is a little irksome… not so much that I’m genuinely upset after the fact, but it does sour the experience a bit… If someone is genuinely trying at a character they’re just not that good at, hey I’ve been there, it’s all good, just try your best and have fun learning a new character Idk maybe I need reeducation on this (tl;dr don’t dick around on the other side of the map)

As someone who has a hard time sticking too one hero and likes too learn all 3 roles and multiple characters in those roles, it’s disheartening too hear people get upset with players that aren’t performing great in quickplay because they are trying a new hero. People like this are the reason why i sometimes turn of game/text chat.

I'm now starting to miss the exp penalty that overwatch used to had. Yeah, it's annoying having to deal with it and that it stacks, but you still get experience, and you can still play the game

My take on the "it's quickplay" debate is that there is a big difference between "trying hard" and "hardly trying" and I feel like everyone who is on the "it's quickplay" side is just ignoring that fact. I'm not asking you to sit up in your gamer chair, leaned in, with gamer fuel ready and addys popped to crank out some W's, I don't even care if we lose. Games can still be fun, even if we lose, so long as an attempt was made. What I want is people to just try though, put in 10% effort. If you suck at a hero, that's totally fine. I suck at heroes. Just help push the cart/bot/point. Throw your body at it if you have to. If you're not even doing that much, then it doesn't matter what game mode you're playing because you aren't even playing the game at all.

now hear me out. quickplay should be taken semi seriously to a certain extent. not everyone is trying to go into competitive for a long game but they still want a semi serious game. or if the other team are mega tryhards I think asking you quickplay team mates to take the game a little more seriously is fine.

The core of the quickplay take that it's "not serious" is just incorrect. Ultimately even quickplay is a competitive gamemode where one team wins and one team loses. Yes, you don't get a shiny badge or a number that goes up or down and sure you might even get perks that ranked does not, but you're still 10 people playing against each other. The take in this video aside (because the tiktok guy is just insane), you have to take it somewhat seriously because "fun" in an FPS means "winning".

I will say, I think Flat's experience with QP is a bit different than the vast majority's because of his hidden MMR. There are definitely WAY more people intentionally throwing QP matches than he thinks.
