The Shunpūkan Dojo of Nagoya, renown mostly for its Owarikan Ryū spear techniques, also happen to practice Yagyū Shinkage Ryū Heihō. During this event, Shunpūkan’s members chose not to demonstrate their Owarikan Ryū spear techniques, which will not appear in this video.
The Yagyū Shinkage Ryū style demonstrated here is "Yagyū Genshū Jikiden". Master Kanbe Kaneshichi inherited it from Master Yagyū Toshichika, the tenth Sōke of Yagyū’s Owari branch, at the end of the Shogunate. It is that form, which transmits the actual sword techniques of the warriors of the end of the Edo period, which is called “Genshūden Shinkage Ryū”.
The present successor is Katō Isao, the master of Nagoya’s Shunpūkan. The Director Katō is also the 8th successor at the head of the Owarikan Ryū Sōjutsu.
Shunpūkan’s demonstrations usually include first Hasseihō, then Sangakuen-no-Tachi, followed by Enpi and Tengushō, to end with Miyamoto Musashi’s Enmei Ryū style.
Owari Yagyū and Enmei Ryū are closely related since the beginning of the Edo era, and the Shunpūkan Dōjō has been practicing them both together during training up until today as they have been transmitted by Kanbe Kaneshichi.
