I wouldn't ever dispute his bench nor would I say his lifts do not count. But that arch undoubtably and extremely shortens the range of motion especially with that wide grip. If I had any influence on the IPF as far as rules go, I'd change that 100%

The rules in the IPF are there for safety and demonstrating control of the bar. As long as the lifter follows that it's up to them on how they lift. why would you want to add more rules, restricting the lifter even more. At Least for me and any Powerlifter i know, we what to increase our performance by getting stronger and getting more efficient. Owen has achieved this brilliantly by working on the form he has now with such a short range of motion. I see nothing wrong with it.

There's no extra points for a bigger ROM. If you lift more, you lift more. Same goes for lifting belts and sleeves. People use them to get more kgs, I use them to get more kgs. Would I prefer it, if no one used them? Sure. But as long as something is allowed and gives you an advantage you'll have to use it in order to get the best result possible. Personally, I admire his technique and am working on my mobility in order to one day have a similar bench.

Weird setups on squat and bench. And on bench, that kind of "handoff" is inefficient.
@MellonVegan
@MellonVegan 8 лет назад
Well, if you get a normal lift off then the guy giving it will have to jump aside before you can get a press command. That does cost time. In theory, the less time you spend under the bar, the less energy you should expend by holding your position under such loads.
@northswole
@northswole 8 лет назад
+Tobias Ommer a normal lift off is better, because it allows you to "realize" weight or let the body adjust, that's if the person handing off lets go of the weight slowly but not too slow. Or could just lift it off on your own. It's part of the reason why Bryce Lewis prefers that now. Having a lift off like Hubbard isn't efficient because the guys on each side have to let go at the same time and at the same pace and with an equal amount of assistance. To lift at near maximal loads, you need of ounce of balance you can acquire.
@MellonVegan
@MellonVegan 8 лет назад
Matthew Cortez I get where you're coming from. Just trying to think of why he chose to have it this way. For me, taking it out on my own is best but that's also because every spotter so far, no matter how good, has pulled my shoulders forward ever so slightly, so I can get more tightness doing it myself. But yeah, I get where you're coming from.

I've competed, I've used leverages for my benefit, i get it. I still think there should be a limit to how much you can contort your body on bench. A three inch range of motion is insane, and a bit excessive. It's hard to respect. Most of the benching legends I can think of, have limited body contortion and are just plain strong.

There needs to be some ruling on ROM for bench press, that arch is ridiculous
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 6 лет назад
PozoBe so what about lifters with big chests and short arms. How would it be judged. Do we measure arms and distance? What what if that lifter didnt take in air when getting measured but then did take in air on the patform. This would change the ROM up to a few inches. ROM is just not realistic and that's why it is not used. The rules are are set are open to everyone to use and exploit to there limits. If a lifter decides to have a big arch and another doesn't that is their choice. As long as your hands don't to past the rings on the bar and your shoulders, butt and feet all remain in contact with the bench and ground there is not much more that can to done.
@pjb2960
@pjb2960 6 лет назад
There isn't much you can do about genetics, but that dosen't really matter as different arm and leg lengths have advantages and disadvantages in all three lifts. Maybe they could just put a reasonable limit on lower back gap on the bench. You gotta admit it just looks stupid, he's basically half repping that press.

thats the funniest bench set up ive ever seen. Its not about how much you bend your back but rather how much you can bend the rules
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 7 лет назад
Not really bending the rules thought. The rules are quite clear. Head shoulders butt and feet must all be planted and stay that way through the full lift. Bending the rules would be taking a foot off the floor and still getting the lift
@yelnatsnart
@yelnatsnart 7 лет назад
i was just joking but i what i meant by bending the rules is using the rules to your advantage like having a super tall arch and having like 1/2 inch rom. (not saying thats this guy but you see shit like this in other videos)
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 7 лет назад
+Stanley Tran sorry man, had quite a bit of bashing comments on this video. Starting to miss the funny side of it as well. I know just what you mean though. I think he's cheating simply because I can't get an arch like him haha
@lukemortlock
@lukemortlock 8 лет назад
How on earth can that classed as a successful bench press? With his back arched that significantly he's only lowering the bar about 2-3 inches; his upper arms aren't anywhere near horizontal. Not sure how that counts, terrible range of motion
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 8 лет назад
That's quite easy. first off the IPF says your shoulders, head, bottom and feet must all be touching the floor or bench at all times. the bar need to be lowered to the chest on command of the head judge, then it must come to a complete stop before the pressed command can be given. the rack command will be give once the weight is locked and held at the elbows. this would complete a bench press under IPF rule given that's a short version to it but I am sure you understand what I am saying. they don't have rules over back arch nor angle of arms.
@lukemortlock
@lukemortlock 8 лет назад
No you're completely right John, I just feel that to be a truly fair contest the competitor should be required to lower the bar a minimum distance
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 8 лет назад
+lukemortlock only problem with that is you would be put in classes based on arm length and weight, you can't ask lifters with longer arms to lift against ones with shorter arms. And how does a lifter know he has lowered the bar the right distance. I can't see how this would be implemented into the sport. In any sport there is rules and to be at the top you need to push those rules to the limit in order to get the max out of them. I understand you don't like benching with an arch but I think the rules are fair and could be the best way to judge the bench press.

@onLYbyM

@Beau Good point, haha. It's been 5 months but I'm sure John has got an answer for that.
@shoobadoo123
@shoobadoo123 7 лет назад
Ipf really needs to have an arch limit
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 6 лет назад
+shoobadoo123 or maybe you need to learn how to arch better. Maybe he is just better at making the most out of the rules compared to most people who bench. A bit like tiger woods getting laser eye surgery to help him put better, every golfer can get it done if they want but their choice is not to do it. I'm sure if you put in the effort you like most of us could get a better arch if we wanted to and in turn bench more weight.
@shoobadoo123
@shoobadoo123 6 лет назад
John Miller arching that much defeats the purpose of bench press. That's why I believe they should change the rules. And of course he is better at making the most out of the rules compared to his competition; that's why his bench is "so good." Also, the tiger woods example you gave doesn't give him an advantage. The longest putts golfers make are 50 feet max. And when they are long putts, the flagpole is still in the ground. But even if it wasn't in the ground, it wouldn't matter cause golfers aren't going to play with blurry vision. They all have glasses or contacts, unless their vision is good. Last, I don't want a "better bench" if it means doing it incorrectly. I don't care what ipf says is okay, the way he benches not even half repping. Of course, some arch is good and natural, but definitely not that much.
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 6 лет назад
+shoobadoo123 the only thing is how do you control the arch. The only way I can see to do it is by the judges eye. But then some might allow more then others.
@shoobadoo123
@shoobadoo123 6 лет назад
John Miller just because it's difficult to come up with an objective way to test back arch does not mean they couldn't at least try. There has to be at least a few good ideas floating around out there on how to do it. I can think of a couple myself. Let me know if you'd like to hear them.

@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 6 лет назад
Powerlifting is popular and it has grown more in the last few years than any other sport of weightlifting
@HenryNintendoNerd
@HenryNintendoNerd 6 лет назад
cant deny that, but i dont see it ever appealing to the public for televised viewing or anything close to it. the ipf trying to join the Olympics is a laugh for the same reason. It will be popular among those who are into it and care but not anyone outside of the sport. that was my point. Reason being those crazy looking bench presses and such. Look at strongman events. much MUCH less people compete in strongman vs powerlfiting, but strongman is WAY more popular to the general public than powerlifting by an order of magnitude. there is a very obvious reason for that and it links to the crazy bench presses we see in powerlifting. olympic lifting has history, and lifitng those bars above the head so fast is like a magic trick to most people. its got appeal to people outside the circles too. powerlfiting just doesnt have that.
@Outland9000
@Outland9000 5 лет назад
I have to disagree... Strongman has probably grown more than any other weightlifting sport over the last 10 or so years. Almost every gym I go to has big tires to flip, steel logs to lift and such like. Lots of different people I meet are into functional strongman style strength. If I want to do proper powerlifting those gyms are still niche. Might be a different story in the USA though. The Strongman competitions also draw a far bigger crowd here in Europe, Leeds arena sells 10,000 seats when Giants Live rolls into town.
@JohnmillerPowerlifting
@JohnmillerPowerlifting 5 лет назад
I think like everything else people are drawn to the drama and the sceptical of a show. This is something strongman with have over any weightlifting sport. You just can't get that type of show out of any other weightlifting sport. But I think I would still challenge you on growth of the sports. I think if you were to look at the % growth of people competing in the given sports powerlifting will be higher. Strongman is not for everyone, most people give up when they see the cost of drugs to be good in the sport. Weightlifting is very hard to master and you can't learn it in any old gym. Where powerlifting is the everyday mans sports. Almost every gym has a squat rack and a bench press. All the equipment you need is a belt if you even want to put one on. This is why the sport is growing faster than the others. It might never get on tv like strongman is but I don't think that will stop it's growth. RU-vid is a platform that is great for sports like this to be presented to the world. There is no need to go to a main stream tv platform. As for joining the Olympics or not you can understand why they would push for this. It would be a massive breakthrough. As for form that would not play a role to the general public, most of them don't go to the gym anyway. In time rules are changing and arches will get smaller while still maintaining lifter safety. But with all sports lifters will push the rules to the limit to win.
