With 120 tires on the ground and a transport crew of 2 truck drivers, 2 trailer operators, 1 superintendent, 1 civilian pilot vehicle, 4 police escorts, 4 bucket trucks, and 1 boom truck, OXBO moved the first of five bridge sections that will comprise a 631' long pedestrian/ bicycle bridge spanning the Interstate 10 at Post Oak Road in Houston, Texas.
This section of the bridge was 197’ long, 17’ wide, 15’ tall and weighed 170,000-pounds. To navigate the streets and highways in Houston, OXBO’s engineers developed a transport plan that utilized a prime mover and 2 independent sets of six axle line Goldhofer SL trailers with turntables. This allowed OXBO’s ground crew to independently steer the front and rear trailers through the tight corners while maintaining level transport angles using the trailer hydraulics.
The 31-mile route through Houston had 8 corners and 13 bridges, including 1 bridge that required additional engineering analysis due to the static loading of the transport equipment/ bridge section being parked on top of a separate bridge while waiting to be unloaded.
In addition to 4 months of planning and engineering, OXBO coordinated the timing of the move with TXDOT and construction crews so they could close the interstate highway and surface road system while waiting to unload this section of the bridge span.
The loaded dimensions were 235’ long, 17’ wide, 20’1” tall and 440,000-pounds. OXBO will haul the remaining 5 bridge sections over the next 45 days, including 3 sections at the same time!
