TESTED here, the Oxford Products Continental Textile suit from their 'Advanced Rider Series'.
With any all weather gear, the thing that we all want to know first is „will it keep me dry in the wet and warm in the cold?“.
So in this video I set out to discover how well this two piece performs in disgusting rain and bitter cold.
Join me in this video to find out how the testing went!
Many thanks to Oxford for sending me the gear for testing.

You're getting pretty good at this kit review lark, Andy. Bravo 👏. I stumped up for a, then, top o'the line Rukka Armaxis jacket in 2014. Still has yet to let a drop of water in. Despite the snazzy removable thermal inner jacket (may be worn as a casual number on its own) it isn't as warm as my 3 layer Richa jacket. You're right - more underlayering required for proper cold days with a laminate jacket. Still, the Rukka was so pricey I only have one kidney to keep warm now. Every cloud... 👍
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
Haha! One kidney is lucky! Must save on fuel economy too! I guess it’s only fair that laminates have to have one weakness against the liner setup!

Very fair review 👍. Personal experience of far too many years commuting and touring, the only way to keep warm and dry is electric (plug in, not battery) clothing and 2 piece waterproofs over some half decent protective clothing.

Really good review AMC, i love the music in the background it really feels like professional commercial from Oxford. i have exactly same suit, and when i drove from 300 km in last bit of October and it was 7 degrees and really windy, and when i was nearly home it was 4 degrees and wasn't cold at all, still varm and dry i love it. love your channel, and keep up the great work. Good, honest review. I own the Montreal 3.0 I live in Florida. I commute 30 minutes in torrential tropical downpours. The jacket gets heavy but not once has it ever soaked through. Going on three years now and it looks new still. I prefer that the rain liner is integral. I laugh at your rain test. We call that a drizzle... lol. Oxford is high quality at low price.

Thank you for the detailed review, I really appreciate the effort! I'm in the market for a new jacket/trousers, my 10 year/60k mile old HG gear is perishing slowly but steadily. Random online bikers keep suggesting mega pricey gear ("you get what you're paying for") but the Goretex HG was £400 and I don't feel like paying 4 times the the price for something that's hardly 4 times as good or will last 4 times as long. Oxford seems attractive, shame about drafty zippers and short waterproof sleeves. Looking forward to the Hinterland review! :)

Ultimately I personally have never been satisfied with waterproof jackets and trousers they are rarely...waterproof! The only way to be waterproof/windproof on any distance journey is to get an over jacket/trousers like the ones made by Scott. It saves being cold and damp which is distracting once it gets to you . Give that a try if you can get some sent to you 👍

That is the issue with that type of suit (all brands). I had a Rukka Goretex suit with inner waterproof layer, never let in any water, liner's to end of sleeve's but took forever to dry out. I now have a Bering Laminate suit which is brilliant, has a removable inner warm layer. Its been well tested here in Ireland with our usual rain, and so far so good. Its a real shame that the Oxford failed to have full length sleeve's, real mystery on that. Still a nice looking suit though.. Great review..

Thanks mate! This was recorded over a period of several weeks as the weather steadily got worse. The heated grips packed up half way through and so I needed to put the SW-Motech Handguards back on to give my hands a chance in the cold! Sadly the bar end mirrors don't work with the Handguards, so they had to be swapped. But I had of course already recorded other parts of the video before that happened, so there's a bit of a continuity mix up throughout!

With your history I'm surprised Rukka didn't send you stuff! Good to see the Oxford gear, here in Australia the three layer combo is more ideal for touring and there are features I prefer over my current gear. If you have gauntlet gloves on, why didn't you put the gloves over the end of your jacket in the rain to stop the water from going in and seeping into your base layer?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
Ha! Send me stuff?! They didn't even reply to me! :D I think that with the gloves, it was a bit of a lose/lose situation sadly. The gauntlet of the glove didn't reach as far as the waterproof liner. @hoojamaflicks 3 года назад
good review andy, but these drop liner textile jackets in rain or especially for touring make no sense. short of fully expensive laminates, the answer is three layers. and way cheaper. and will never wet out. outer layer 100% waterproof over jacket like the spada aqua, mid layer main jacket with all the protection, under layer, whatever is appropriate for the temperature, from fleece to heated fleece. similar for lower half. for three season touring, the main jacket can be a mesh, that way you are covered with combinations or removal of layers for any condition. been doing it this way for over 10 years all over Europe. zero problems. including day long torrential rain and Mediterranean heatwaves.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
I agree that laminates are definitely the way for all season touring. Of course the cost makes that system a little more prohibitive. I think that for many, the drop liner thing works for when you'Re unlikely to be caught out in a horrendous day long drenching. I've been out a few times in this suit and just been caught out by the odd hour long downpour and remained warm and dry. It all depends on what you want and how much you'Re willing to spend. Heated gear and laminated is certainly the top flight, luxury way to go!

That waterproof lining stopping short at the sleeve is a total fail for me, good info. I often push my jacket as you are here without another rain jacket on top and that has never happened to me. I don't own any top of ther range gear either.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
It is an odd one. I can only imagine that the idea was to avoid a large pile up of various cuffs. Sadly the cost is damp wrists! Running the rain gauntlet without ever needing waterproofs is the holy grail!
@jamiemui5186
@jamiemui5186 3 года назад
To be honest, there is no such thing as a real world 4 season solution. When the temp goes over 30c you want mesh only. 3 season is the closest any "4 season gear" are good for. But the oxford with 2 separate lining makes for a good winter option. More dead air space helps keep you warm.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
I've ridden in 40 degrees in full leather. With enough ventilation (and keeping moving!) it's more than doable. We'll see how this stuff fares when the weather brightens up!
@jamiemui5186
@jamiemui5186 3 года назад
@@AndyManCam Leather in 40c might be doable, but it still sucks. I was in textile in 42c in italy in Aug. My textile suit was well vested with mesh panel front and back. But I really wish I pack a full on mesh suit. But going from Germany to Finland and then Italy. And full on mesh was not the best option for 7500KM in multiple temp zones.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
Yeah of course. Sadly there has to be some compromise somewhere! One option I've considered is wearing the Knox Urban shirt under a textile jacket (with the armour removed). That way, when it warms up you can remove the outer jacket and pack it away without the need to worry about the armour taking up space. this isn't a cheap setup by any means!
@jamiemui5186
@jamiemui5186 3 года назад
@@AndyManCam it just add more gear to pack. That is the compromise
@peetee49
@peetee49 3 года назад
Problem I find is when you have removed all the linings and left with just the outer shell the armour feels very uncomfortable, I use a leather jacket in summer and if any rain I put on a fully waterproof thin jacket.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
Sadly it was far too cold for me to test that this time around! 😂 I think a lot of it comes down to the actual armor though. In this jacket, the level 1 protectors that come with it are ok. Nice and soft, no sharp edges. But the level 2 Sas-Tec protectors that i swapped them for are even better as they’re visco-elastic and mould to your body when they’re warm. Super comfy AND more protective. Then the level 2 Microlock back protector in the Knox Urbane Pro Shirt is another step up. Super flexible, incredible ventilation and about as much protection as you can get from a built in back protector. Since using this stuff, I’ve never found armor uncomfortable in any weather.

What happened to your Proof Stretch III rain gear? Different thoughts after long term usage? At one point you were recommending those...
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
It was really good, right up to the point where it wasn't any more! In Thüringer Wald it just seemed to let ALL of the rain through the trousers! Also the Jacket now seems to soak up just as much water as a drop liner jacket and gets very heavy and cold indeed. I tried re-proofing both the trousers and the jacket in Scotland, but no joy. They still soaked up the rain like a sponge and held it next to my body. SO they were good, but didn't last forever.

My real name is not Hans... I just found it funny to name this profile like that. Maybe you haven't been long enough in Germany, but in German that's on every paper you have to fill out. (preprinted) Herr Hans Muster Musterstrasse 1 usw. About the Proof Stretch III rain gear: maybe you just have overused them? Watching your channel, it seems like you can't ride in good weather at all. As soon as you go out for a ride, it starts to rain, haha. You intensely used the rain gear for 2-3 years, have you? For that price, that's probably the lifespan of it?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
Ah i see! Yes, I’ve seen plenty of Hans Mustermann! I think that for around 200€ for waterproofs would get me a little more life than 2-3 years with use only 1 in 5 rides (thankfully it doesn’t always rain! 😂) i will admit that at the beginning they were fantastic. They started to soak up the water in the second season and lost all hipe in the third! I guess maybe that’s to be expected.

@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 3 года назад
Gore-tex does seem to still be the leader. Although I think that the gap is fast decreasing as new membranes are created. Plus Gore-Tex has a terrible environmental/eco reputation. Some of the reading out there about it is quite worrying. PTFE is NOT a nice material to manufacture! Also I've heard many with goretex drop liners complain of the exact same problem. They stay dry, but the gear gets cold and heavy. Great for the odd downpour.
