I’m from “down south” but I visited Birmingham a few years ago myself, and while I didn’t get to see much else besides the train station area, the locals are so nice and so welcoming, I loved it more than I was expecting to! Well done Birmingham, you lovely people! 💐

Ozzy is one of my favorite people in music. I was supposed to see him in 2020 but it was cancelled due to his new Parkinson’s diagnosis, and then COVID happened shortly after. I was devastated, that was probably my only chance. But of course I understood, his health comes first! I will be destroyed when he leaves this earth. I love this video so much!! Amazing job. Such cool things to see!

Ozzy, Bill, Geezer and Tony are the Godfathers of Heavy Metal, and because of those 4, We have Heavy and every other kind of Metal, And so many great bands that were inspired by Black Sabbath 🙌🏻💜.

@Black1968Sabbath Sorry mate, I must disagree slightly... Deep Purple and Zep were around 1 year before Sabbath hit, here on Northern California College Radio anyways.. While Deep Purple and Zep were known for their thunderous volume, speed, and influences, Sabbath is known for actually playing the once forbidden "Devil's Interval" tri-tone".. so they deserve credit for that!! Either way, all 3 are regarded as the gods of heavy metal music (before the term: heavy metal" was defined, my friends and I would call it high speed chainsaw on metal rock). Going to their first concerts in SF and Oakland changed my world!! Not to split hairs or anything, but Steppenwolf first used the term "Heavy Metal" in "Born to be Wild" in 1968, even though they were regarded as a Psychedelic Rock band... we could debate further with Hendrix, Cream, the Yardbirds and Alice Cooper, but then the lines of definition get all blurred up. Happy Halloween! 🎃

@@RiverRat_1977 Those 2 are also up there but they are not Godfathers of Heavy Metal that title belongs to Black Sabbath and Black Sabbath only Tony Iommi is the original heavy metal sound and Ozzy is the original heavy metal voice if you see on interviews James Hetfield Tom Araya Bruce Dickinson Rob Halford all say Heavy Metal started with Black Sabbath and they are the main inspiration

@@RiverRat_1977Even after the term "heavy metal" was coined, Zeppelin was not referred to as a heavy metal band. That moniker for them only came about years after they broke up when the genre morphed into a much expanded definition from what it was at its inception.

Witton cemetary, my family are buried there. Haven’t seen that church open for years. The gates on the other side have a nice house too. Think it’s been sold now. My dog is called Ozzy 😊

Birmingham is where I grew up. There's also a tram in the city center named after ozzy but it goes all the way out to Wolverhampton, so you may not get to see it unless you wait around for a while. Not far from the bench there's the walk of stars, just like the Hollywood one, with about 30 stars including ones for ozzy and Tony. UB40 are popular there because they are also from Birmingham and, yes, I did go in the crown a few times but bands had stopped playing there by then. Enjoyed watching this, I moved away about 8 years ago and have only been back there a couple of times.

Thanks guys, another great insight into the country I live in. Ozzy & the rest of the band deserve more recognition just like you said, we generally are so good at preserving places of historical interest. I'm really shocked The Crown isn't being used as a live venue still or some type of museum to celebrate its importance in the rock n roll history timeline. When I went to visit Birmingham back in 2012, I went to the pub that Ozzy & Black Sabbath used to frequent. It’s a cozy little pub with all natural wood and booths. We have an Aston, PA near where I live! Of course lots of names carried over from England in the Philadelphia region.

I had no idea you'd visited my city! Birmingham has some amazing music history and history in general (industrial revolution & the Victorian arts and crafts movement!) We have a museum all about coffin making and famous funerals which I think you'd love. Ozzy Osbourne was born 2 streets over from where my grandmother lived for her whole life, it's lovely to see you guys exploring my city which gets a bad rep quite often. Luckily the crown has officially become a listed building as of March 2024, so the council can't knock it down and be greedy. The redevelopment going on in our city has unfortunately taken some historical places away from us. I'm glad you also checked out Digbeth, it has a great nightlife around that area for alternative people as there's a few alternative clubs and bars.

UB40 formed in Birmingham in 1978, incidentally for those who don't remember, a 'UB40' or dole card, was the attendance card you had to bring to the unemployment office when collecting your social security money every two weeks, it stands for 'Unemployment benefit form 40', the band was all unemployed when they started out hence the name they chose!..

Great bands, The Move, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dexys midnight runners, The streets, Led Zepplin Traffic, Duran Duran, The Beat, Toyah, ocean colour scene, ELO, The Moody Blues, Christine McVie, Napalm Death, Magnum, The Charlatans, Musical Youth, steel pulse, Roy wood & Wizzard, The Spencer Davis Group, Carl Wayne, The fortunes, Johnny Foreigner. The list is Endless. The whole of the West Midlands is connected with music, film and the arts, and television like Wolverhampton Dudley, Walsall. Robert Plant became the Vice president of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football club his boyhood club but he was born in West Brom rivals of Wolves, ive actually had a pint and sat next to him at Molineux few years ago. So jealous! I have been to London but never the birthplace of the man that “introduced me to my mind”! I had the honor of seeing the Reunion tour with OzzFest. I felt so privileged to hear Sabbath live being as I didn’t start listening to metal until 1982 as a young lad of 11 yrs. Sabbath/Ozzy and Iron Maiden are my top two bands…and I got to meet Steve Harris ( such a down to earth dude!) when he toured the US with British Lion. But that is another story :)

I'm from Birmingham so a great watch. Just wondered when leaving New Street train station and looking towards the crown did you notice the cinema a little to your left. The Electric Cinema, the UK's oldest working cinema opened in 1909. Thought you'd like that.

Black Sabbath changed the face of hard rock forever, spawning many immitators over the years. Their debut album cover is still one of the most haunting and visually captivating I've ever seen. Interresting story about the crosses: Ozzy's father made them for each member of the band to ward off evil hexes the band were getting threatened with from Satanists at the time.

Small point but the figures around the door and windows are grotesques ie purely decorative gargoyles are carvings to divert rain water and protect the building

I’m sure you guys already know but there’s a difference between Gargoyles and Grotesque’s “The difference between a gargoyle and a grotesque is easy to remember. A gargoyle is a decorated waterspout that projects from a roof and carries rainwater away from the walls of a building, protecting it from damage, whilst a grotesque is a decorative carving that has no functional architectural purpose”. I find them fascinating whatever their purpose.

My grandpa Martin lee of a support band called slam hammer once knocked around with ozzy during 1969 and 1970 my grandpa sang as a support act in 1970 just before ozzy really got big. Even stopped ozzy from being ran over one night whilst they got so drunk he slept on my grandpas couch that night lol

I can definitely relate to Jessica "hugging" historical places / objects. Just to be able to have that tactile connection with history and to feel the past is amazing. We recently toured the Biltmore house and I did the same with walls, doorways and statues... within reason of course 😁

Should've popped down here to Worcestershire (not far from Brum) and did a piece on Robert Plant and John Bonham, his grave is in Rushock and often has symbols and hundreds of drumsticks left there, also quite an impressive memorial in Redditch of John. Also if you're lucky enough you see Robert Plant knocking about in stourport, bewdley or Kidderminster quite often. Great fella 👍🏼.

That's so cool you came to Brum! One thing we are rubbish at here is paying homage to great things our city is famous for...Black Sabbath, UB40, Tolkien, Cluedo, there's so much and it just gets ignored and the heritage crumbles. We could make so much of it. If you are able to visit to Birmingham again you should visit Warstone Lane Cemetery and Key Hill cemetery in the jewellery quarter they're amazing as well as the Coffin Works and Back to Backs. Plus the Tolkien trail. Lots of dark and interesting things to explore. I love seeing it through someone else's eyes as I think we can become blind to our surroundings. (I was also in the Crown just before it closed and it was a total sh*t hole sadly). This video has given me some knew found appreciation for my home. Thank you, I love your channel :)

I bought Black Sabbath's first album the year it was released. Still listen to it today, one of the most innovative (and heaviest.) Often imitated, seldom equalled.
