It's interesting to note that on this particular album these 3 songs are on, PJ played all of the instruments except the drums. Her drummer from the original trio line-up played those.
Great reaction: pj Harvey is such a talented woman... Would urge you to hear her later music, it is really different when it comes to delivery and agression
Polly and the boys are on fire here , quite a contrast in style on the 3 numbers , "The Letter" is one of those tracks that mesmerises you after 2 or 3 initial listens , great performance 🔥🔥😍😍
Its so good gives me is this desire era vibes…but we cant judge it yet as with a man a woman walked by she released another song that was different to the album which was amazing eccentric
That guitarist gets a great sound; I love the combo of the Orange and the AC30s. Plus I love them guitars; the name of the brand eludes me temporarily, cos they’re always outside mi budget. Also, I adore PJ Harvey. She’s so beautiful, and so enigmatic. She seems the sort of woman I’d never weary of. I’d never stop discovering new things about her. Anyroad, I’d say when you were thinking ‘persona’, you likely meant ‘demeanour’. And I’m absolutely with you about melody. I’m just the same. P.S.: Eastman. That’s the guitar brand. P.P.S.: ‘Who the Fuck’ reminded me SO MUCH of Iggy Pop. And there is no question: PJ is aggressive as hell! She would fuck you up, m8 😂! Seriously, though, if you listen to her whole catalogue, she’s got loads of tunes like this. She’s very aggressive. I dunno whose bad side I’d rather get on: PJ Harvey, or L7. Believe it or not, I think I’d be way more terrified of pissing off Polly Jean. She looks so sweet and diminutive, but i just know she’s probably the type to hold a grudge, like, and let it, y’know, seethe and burn inside her until you LEAST EXPECT it, and when she sticks the metaphorical knife in, she’ll twist it good for max damage. I married the woman who first introduced me to both Nick Cave and P.J. Harvey; that’s EXACTLY how she left me. I think they were truly similar souls, just as I’m much more like John Lennon (as a personality type; I’m not so hubristic as to say I’m anywhere near so talented!).
PJ sounds aggressive because she is into aggressive and ugly music. She composes/writes nearly all of her music by herself, mostly on electric guitar, listen to her demos (4-Track Demos would be a nice place to start) or even watch early perfomances from like, 1991 to 1993, where she fronts the PJ Harvey Trio as guitarist/vocalist. She grew up listening to musicians who make raw blues and rock music, and in her teenage years found out bands like Slint and Pixies, so it makes sense. But there's no such thing as "aggression is male" - it is a very stupid conclusion - specially when we're talking about music. There are many factors that play into that (and there are also different types of aggression), whether you're a man or a woman - like childhood environment or societal pressure, for example. There are male musicians who have aggressive behaviour and make soft music, just as there are metalheads who are super sweet and make aggressive music. It's not a black and white thing.
I didn't get into PJ Harvey... not really... until after the White Stripes (note the Airline guitar that Jack White would make famous about 5 years after this). Never could understand why I liked the White Stripes and the Kills.... but not Polly Jane. I'd tried to like her. Even bought a couple of albums when they came out and followed her career since the first LP but couldn't get my head round her, not really. It was too raw. Also some of her stuff round this time was a bit too close to the bone, coming from a woman who looked and dressed exactly like the partner I'd "set free" (I was holding her back) to go and do her own thing less than a year before.
FYI yeah yeah yeahs HIGHLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! look/movements sound was taken by singer imitating pj harvey!!!! as too the guitarist of YYY'S looks plays like nick cave from birthday party/the boys next door life/ppl forget sadly n trash modern music buries the originals!!!!!!!!
