Peter Hebblethwaite, the Chief Exec of P&O ferries was up in front of the Business Committee on Monday where he faced the music for P&O's business practices. Subscribe to our new podcast now, or you're a silly goose: linktr.ee/pubcast
I’m all for him going to jail, on ONE condition, it’s only those who call for imprisonment, pay for his imprisonment. Most taxpayers are burdened enough without paying to keep this in a lifestyle, fed , watered, clothes on his back and roof over his head, that’s not JUSTICE, and ALL the corrupt politicians calling him out are doing the exact same to this country, flooding it with cheap labour illegals, wake up ffs
He's previously sacked workers in what he admitted was an illegal manner ... now he's been found out that he's lied to Parliament ... he needs to GO TO JAIL, don't pass go, don't collect any Salary !
Weren't they only recently on the brink of bankruptcy? Now £600m in profits, whilst firing UK staff and re-hiring cheaper foreign labour on pittance 'salaries'.
Why is this guy not in prison? He not only broke the law. He did so purposefully, willfully, and confessed openly to his crime. The fact he will walk out of this meeting a free man is an insult to every working person.
The wages of most companies are subsidised by the tax payer in order to enable the employee to live, due to companies not paying their employees enough to live. There are very few companies not being subsidised this way.
@@mikeclifford7740 In other words, profits are subsidised. Corporate welfare. These companies need to buy less avacado toast and mansions, and pull themselves up by their bootstraps and work harder to get of the government teet.
That's hard to do being that they are no longer simply a ferry company. They now have container ships which import/export huge amounts of commercial items. Boycotting them may mean quitting cucumbers one day, shoes the next and putting fuel in your car on the following day.
Like Angela van Didn't Bother.... (Sorry wrong select committee/inquiry but just goes to show, big businesses are all only interested in shareholders and their own bonuses 🤬🤬).
Sounds like P&O did exactly what everybody knew they wanted to do. And the UK government allowed it. And the French government is not going to allow it.
Yeah this is all performative. Nothing is going to be done here. All this guy has to do is not have any shame and turn up to these committees. That’s it
@@stevecoppin6396 The UK minimum wage was at the time £10.42 an hour but for maritime workers employed by an overseas agency, who work on ships which are foreign-registered in international waters, the rates do not apply. The UK expects new legislation addressing the issue to become active this summer while France brought in a similar law this year. It's got little or nothing to do with Brexit or the EU if France had to close the same loophole while still being a member of the EU.
This is all down to Tony Blair who was a labour PM. All he did was screw the workers who voted for him. And it will not change when people vote in the next labour government.
The same argument as we had as civil engineers when looking at mean payment across the board, which included unskilled shop workers etc. was about right !!!! compare apples with apples is saying we will compare a skilled worker in this case a qualified engineer with a street cleaner !!!
P&O used to have many UK workers who under employment law were entitled to UK minimum wage. P&O ferry boss said the company was not sustainable in the current climate due to being heavily affected by the restrictions of covid. So, according to the P&O boss he broke UK employment law and sacked every single UK employee on the day without any notice or consultation period which is required by law. What is worse the man admitted that he broke UK law and was very brazen about it. He then goes employs agency staff under what is known as international wages, wages that are not regulated by any country BUT is a set amount which any company operating internationally such as ferries, container ships, cargo ships and airlines. The problem with international wages is that they are extremely low which is a loop hole that the P&O boss has used to get cheap labour. What he did is a disgrace and the company should be boycotted but what is worse still is that the UK public do not care because thousands of them are still using P&O for their holiday cruises.
He is NOT doing ANYTHING illegal... so you cannot - should not - punish him. It is UK sovereignty and laws that enable him to do this. As you heard - French sailors get paid appropriately .. P&O can only exploit those that are not bound by a legal framework like that and work by international law. And he is of course correct ... 2 pounds and something might sound little to an English person - but for someone from - oh, i dont know .. Sri Lanka? - it might be average. He can do that legally, because you people vote for politicians that allow it.
@@Shephard1978 "you" as in .. the majority (and yes, yes, i mean the 1st past the post majority) It is undeniable that not only have Brits given the Tory party, that does not hide that it is anti-regulation, pro charter cities/freeports, anti-international courts etc. their votes; - Brits also voted for Brexit ... an idea/ideal that favours those ideas that this CEO showcases. the only thing is .. people tend to see only THEIR benefits, their advantages .. they do not WANT to see their downfalls. Want to take a bet how many Brits would gladly subscribe to leaving the ECHR? Rationally .. you d have to be abysmally dumb to support it .. yet, i fear that it is quite a lot of people .. likely still a minority .. but if the Tory machine went into full gear - along with the Tory media, the Farages, Murdochs, Bannons etc. - i would not be so sure about that. Brits might cheerfully celebrate the day they left the ECHR.
Exactly right all of this is a sham for the public, just a waste of tax payers money if there's no end result, all this bollox about apples for apples.
absolutetely correct ... psycopaths are now successful in business and politics alike !! Philosopher KIngs that Plato refers to is what this world needs!!
Committees and enquiries are a dereliction and distraction from accountability. It's more a show of MPs self importance to look like they actually do something or even care. They'll all be off to the bar or restaurant at public expense when it's over for the day.
@@judtindouglas9051so us mugs see this, get confused at the difference between a committee and a court and think that this country actually holds wealthy people to account for their crimes.
I will certainly avoid using P&O ferries in the future and spread the truth about this shameful and sad Company Thank goodness this video was posted Well done 👍🏻 😮
I hope you never used them after they sacked every British worker on their boats and employed cheap foreign labour who did not know one end of ship from the other....if you have used them since then...shame on you!!!
@@dougaltolan3017 If you think Britain outlawed slavery then look into the tea picking industry in Kenya predominantly owned by one British company who debt trap their workers for life and pay less of an hourly rate than this and no benefits pensions holiday pay etc.
Just another example that if you don't regulate companies, they will take the piss. If a company can't be run privately without slavery, then it shouldn't exist.
Not used them since they sacked all of their staff , tell all of your friends because people don't know . They can then at least make a conscious decision whether or not to use P&O ferries . There are alternatives.
Stop using them and they will --- perhaps if P&O didn't have to pay spurious net zero/carbon hysteria primary and secondary charges - we'd have cheaper tickets, the staff would get paid properly and the environment/climate would be just fine .....:-)
@@ossianx8752This is simply unfettered corporate greed. Green policies have nothing to do with it. These companies don't want to meet green targets for the same reason they don't want to pay their staff properly: shareholder profits.
@@robinroberts2568 - True but all the green policies do is make tickets more expensive which limits the options for the less well off, the higher costs are passed on in the higher cost of everything…. Yet these people who claim to care about the environment and emissions are quite happy adding millions and millions of people to our population- which means more pollution m, more emissions and more concrete over nature …. Bravo for the hypocrisy!! 🤣🤣🤣
Ok, mildly glib comment a while ago, I've listned to the whole interview now. I will never use P&O ferries again in my life and I hope Hebblethwaite winds up destitute. I know he won't, but it's a cheerful thought to end the night on - if you're coming along for the ride, I'm picturing a salvaged festival tent from Glastonbury, a broken thermos-flask and a cheese sandwich somewhere in the Forest of Dean.
Remember when the UK minimum wage was implemented by Tony Blair the tories voted against it every step of the way. This is how the big uk businesses would behave without that safeguard - it was one of the most important steps ever for working class people.
Sure, but if minimum wage doesn’t keep up with inflation it’s still not great. If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation over the past 20 years, it would be more like £20 an hour- almost double what it is currently!
A prime example of a company that shouldn't be in business. Their business model is dependent on paying poverty wages. I wonder how much money P&O donate to the Conservative party.?
@@molybdomancer195And now Labour have accepted her now! Shame on you Stamer! (And I was die-hard labour but that was final straw! Her and her excuses for her filthy husband)!
aided and abetted by HM government, lets face it despite the hot air when P&O sacked the UK crews not one measure was taken by the Tory government in support of the sailors against P&O
@@davidgriffithsbjjcoach7207 they had the opportunity to change the law on fire&rehire when British gas did the same thing a few years ago. The government chose not to.
I would not feel safe on a P and O ferry. If they can treat people like this I will safely assume that they do not care about their passenger safety either.
Yes, it is funny how they can pay all these carbon taxes, employ diversity and equity people to ruin, sorry, run their business model but they can;t afford to pay the front line staff anything ?! ---- Oh wait, maybe, just maybe ...... if they didn't have to pay for non jobs, idealisms and climate hysteria they'd have more money to pay staff ? and our tickets could be cheaper too ?!
It is so self evident that this has been rehearsed many times. He clearly has so much to hide and was terrified of an ad hoc slip up, his lawyers will have scripted ALL responses and ensured he only answered with the exact words prepared.
He might be morally bankrupt but the company isn’t breaking the law so I don’t see how this guy is a criminal….btw I don’t think it’s right and they should pay more but I know this cost would be passed to the customer.
"P&O's chief executive said he earned a £325,000 basic salary and received an £183,000 bonus in April 2023" £280 per hour depending on bank hols and annual leave
He shouldn’t have been allowed to keep saying consolidated when holidays are included. He is taking the holiday pay and spreading it across the the worked pay thus making the holidays unpaid. I suspect he has done the same with the overtime. Work an extra four hours on your 8 hour shift and we will pay you for those hours meaning you’ve earned 50% more on your 8 hour shift hourly rate.
I travel Dover Calais regularly. I have boycotted P and O ever since they scandalously sacked their staff and had them replaced. As I check in with DFDS I am always pleased to see that p and Os checking queue is always shorter. What a vile company this is.
Yet workers CHOOSE to enter an employment contract with P&O. Newsflash, all shipping companies operate by the same employment model choosing 'flags of convenience' and operating under international Maritime law.
@@keithpop3097 saying that it's okay because 'employees choose' is the dumbest and most incorrect argument only simple minded fools use. There's a minimum wage and living wage for a reason, that to survive it takes x amount per hour. If they hire people from the UK, they should pay our minimum wage. They have an international min wage mainly for workers in lower paid countries where they need a lower wage to stay in business, as goods and services are way cheaper there.
@@fireburn95rs It is you that is dumb and also ignorant of the facts. The workers that are paid below the UK minimum wage are foreign, workers and NOT UK hires. You use objective terminology such as "should pay" whereas what they should pay foreign workers is set out in international maritime law and they are paying double that amount. You also take issue with my factual statement that workers 'choose' to work for P&O saying this is incorrect . If you are going to reply, have an argument this time an base it on facts not feelings.
That is unbelievable !! No wonder he is nervous giving his responses , Guaranteed overtime , guaranteed bonus comes out to half a packet of cigarettes an hour Absolutely criminal !
WATCH THIS VIDEO IT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. This man has no morals whatsoever the only thing he is interested in is making as much money £££££ as he can at what cost does not come into the equation, he treats his crews like porns and will treat them as he sees fit whenever it suits as this video shows , when P&O was manned by English Crew it was the same fully trained crew week in week out, as for the Officers that was also supposed to have been made redundant with the ratings 2 years ago they got a bonus but also kept their jobs. This man cannot be trusted if possible please use another ferry company but not P&O please boycott using them.
G’day from Brisbane Queensland Australia. Bring that P&O thief over here to Australia and let him try that in front a Federal Senate enquiry. And he would be told answer the questions correctly or you could face major fines of up to $100000.00 and or serious Gaol time of not less than one year. What a grub this person is to treat his employees with such disdain, he hasn’t the balls to take on the mighty CFMMEU and the Maritime Union of Australia division. P&O and the Liberal Conservative has been taught a very hard lesson do not try that international shit here or you will suffer the consequences for your actions and misdeeds against any worker. The Questioner should be asking this dill how he and P&O fairs in Australia with this sort of attitude to workers.
Stop P & O from operating in UK waters. I'm sure another company would fill the void, with staff renumeration would be fitting for the job they do ,using guidelines from other passenger service companies.
Exploitation is what the present system promotes. The system wouldn't exist without exploitation. The only way to avoid exploitation is to change the system. Unfortunately the biggest exploiters are at the very top now and in control the system, so they are deliberately preventing our system from evolving into a non exploitive system.
On the contrary, it's very much alive and well. Have a gander at the rental market in the UK, a whacking great slice of exploitation with a huge dollop of extortion spooned on top.
He must have some huge secrets against his bosses to be able to keep his job... Hebblethwaite is such a huge crook and one of the most immoral characters ever.
Yes, swimming or buying you own boat is a better bet or perhaps you can name a channel Ferry company that operates to your values ? They all use the same model.
But he looks so honest...I joined the UK merchant navy 47 years ago and crew in those days had their own cabins, their own restaurant, their own bar etc. He makes it sound like P&O have just discovered a unique way of treating people.
James 5:4. If P&O are using a recruitment agency, that agency will be getting paid. The global agenda of businesses not having staff on salary- but putting them on employment contracts with no job security must stop.
Unless we start seeing some of these people face prison time there is going to be a total collapse of trust in our institutions. This is a clear case of criminality. And a man that knows he will face no consequences.
this toad has a £325,000 a year basic salary, not including bonuses he likely awards himself and lives in a £1.5 million mansion in the cotswalds. He must work so much harder than those sea farers surely
Sorry! I can't hold my silence on this. How can the UK government permit this travesty of basic human rights, and I emphasise "basic", to exist? This guy giving evidence is quite obviously a "crook", in that he is no different than the usual scammer, ripping off people who need to work legitimately but can't command good wages! There should be some recourse for legimate claimants (not illegal immigrants) against this injustice to prosecute this type of "Mafia" boss and get him sent to prison for years. If it takes a change in government to realise this, then so be it, as much as it pains me to admit it!
It just goes to show that if a company can get away with paying people the absolute minimum, so they can reap the profits, they'll do it. No moral obligation, just legal. Absolutely disgusting!
@@greentroll9326never mind FFS! Are you one of the creeps who want us out of the ECHR? That is the last bastion of our rights and protections, things the bloody tories have been whittling away since Brexit. Political illiteracy is responsible for so much crap in this country now.

Its embarrasment to see UK GOV allowing P&O to let go UK employees losing job, while allowing same time same company to pay 2.86£ .... this is a business within high end European countries with good income... any investigation if this company paid UK political party or politicians .... or made it completely illegal.
