P0446 Charcoal Canister Repair -- With 5-Minute Epoxy!

Getting P0446 error code? This might help. You might as well give it a try before spending hundreds of dollars. My vehicle is a 2000 Toyota Tacoma, but this could apply to many additional vehicles. Be sure to check out Fix It Angel's video as well:

Toyota's list of possible P0446 causes:
Vacuum hose cracked, holed, blocked, damaged or disconnected
Open or short in vapor pressure sensor circuit
Vapor pressure sensor
Open or short in VSV circuit for EVAP
VSV for EVAP
Open or short in VSV circuit for vapor pressure sensor
VSV for vapor pressure sensor
Charcoal canister cracked, holed or damaged (-- This was my problem. Fixed with 5-minute epoxy!)
ECM

Gonna try these tips out, good video explaining the system for it, currently changed my purge valve and some cracked hoses but still getting ticking. Going to check the other sensors and ports now.

Glad to help! Did you find and patch a leak? Sometime later I had to go back and epoxy the bottom seam of the canister (just like in the other video referenced at 0:22), but that was at least a year ago. Application of epoxy has saved me $200 and kept P0446 away.

I have to say this is an excellent video, the steps you took to provide clarity (including markup diagrams etc) is really commendable. This has helped me tremendously so thanks a million! I do have one question, when i do the pressure test (blow into the canister) it's venting through that little hole on the top round cap closer to the cabin. Is it supposed to do that or is it a leak ?

The tiny vent hole might make a few bubbles as the circular diaphragm underneath moves up and down--which is normal. If it's a continuous stream of bubbles as you apply pressure, that's a leaky diaphragm--which means canister replacement.

So, if I apply 9v power to the Purge VSV and don't hear a click, is it safe to assume it's a faulty valve? I DID hear a click with the Pressure Sensor VSV...

Could that hose also be for a small crack in gas overflow valve located on top of gas tank?

Great video, just did the test yesterday and got a leak at the same location on Fix it angel video. Can I use permatex black silicon sealant to seal this.? Will the gas vapor break the seal?

In California, repairing the canister with epoxy or silicon will not pass the visual inspection of the smog station. Get a new one or one from the recycler, don't waste time and money.

sometimes I wish my error code was just the p0466. Mine is the p0441. will have to do a test on the purge solenoid soon, but I don't think it's that. I think I might need to smoke it.

The drain is a spring-loaded relief. It keeps pressure from building up too much. My guess is that if you got some gasoline on a cold night, but didn't drive the car when it was warm the next day, the tank might heat up and need to vent some air out the drain hose.

I will go with "yes." Without it, the pressure sensor on the purge valve would sense that something is wrong. Pause the video at 0:54. There's a bubble that just says "PRESSURE SENSOR." That sensor is on the bottom of the purge valve.

@@ColoradoDemings I changed my purge valve and gas cap but I hear a clicking noise in the purge valve, is it getting something stuck you think?

@@jezeuz If it clicks when you hook a battery to it, that's normal operation. If it's just sitting there going click, click, click by itself, that seems kinda weird. I ended up applying epoxy around the bottom seam of the plastic case, and P0446 hasn't come back in over 6 years. Another video showed cracked hoses causing P0446. Cracked hose = leak = check engine light.

@@ColoradoDemings I ordered a new one to switch it out. Hopefully it solves my check engine light, I'm also going to put epoxy around the seams as well tomorrow when I do that too
