Rick Pedley, owner and president of PK Safety, shows us the 3M P100 Particulate Respirator Filters 2091. These filters feature extremely fine filtration rated to remove 99.9% of particles .3 microns and larger, including most welding fumes, toxic dusts like asbestos and lead, and many environmental dusts.

The filters are rated for lead and asbestos. The P100 designation means they are what used to be called HEPA on mask filters. They will filter out particulates, as well as fumes. 'Fumes' is the specific term used for burnt metal. Now, about the smell. To absorb smells we would use organic vapor absorbing charcoal. This can be a thin layer for nuisance like the 3M 2097, or a stacked cartridge like the 3M 60921 for more robust protection from vapors.

I bought one of these for use with lead -making sinkers. Last time I used it I could still smell a strange smell and I felt not my self and tired a few days after,I was working outdoors with a on off breeze.. I am wondering how strong this filter is? for example if I was around a camp fire would I be able to smell any smoke? I dont know if it was the acual lead or some other fumes I smelt but I would of thought this would block them aswell, Is there a more powerful respirator/facemask than this

For asbestos, NIOSH requires P100 rated filter and mask combination. Our popular products for that are the 3M 2091 and 3M 7093. Less popular but still valid is the 3M 2097, or any of the combo cartridge/P100 products, such as the 3M 60926.

Will this filter protect against fumes produced from welding galvanized metal and stainless steel?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 9 лет назад
jason lesinski The 3M 2091 P100 (HEPA) filter is intended for use against welding fumes, including galvanized and stainless. If you are going to be arc welding, you may want the 3M 2097, as it has a thin layer of charcoal that helps absorb the ozone. In either case, please take steps to make sure that hot sparks don't touch the filter, as they can quickly burn a hole in the filter material. Another 3M filter, the 7093, has a plastic case over the filter media to keep sparks off.

@rickpedley1099 4 года назад
3M has manufacturing facilities around the world. This includes China and South Korea. 3M will have maintained very high standards throughout the world. However, it should be remembered that each country or region has safety standards and regulations that may differ from the USA. This will effect the markings, part numbers and reference words being used. Best to ask 3M Personal Safety directly for help in choosing equivalent products.

How long do they last using it daily before having to replace?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 4 года назад
Since there would usually be very little dust encountered in this example, they should last for a very long time. Perhaps even weeks. However, some of this depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For health concerns, such as the coronavirus (Coveid-19), please keep in mind that mists may be carried on the surface of the filter and mask. You might consider the 3M 7093 P100 (HEPA) filter, as the hard plastic case contains the filter media. Easier to wipe off the exterior. Also, regularly clean the mask for the same reason.

@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 3 года назад
New product smells are very subjective. The 3M filters, including the 2091, definitely have a smell. As do the masks they fit on to. I expect there to be some sort of 'plastic-y' odor in most every modern manufactured product. Who doesn't love 'new car' smell. This is from a complex number of man-made, and likely somewhat toxic, materials. Back to the 3M filters... If the product is purchased through an authorized reseller of 3M products, and the packaging is intact, you really should have no worries about what you are receiving. 3M is the current gold standard in respiratory protection.
@glytch5
@glytch5 3 года назад
@@rickpedley1099 It was in original packaging and bought through amazon. I purchased new ones from them and the smell was gone. They did finally get back to me and according to 3m the smell should not be there, but was most likely stored near something causing the odor. They said air them out and use them, but I decided to ditch em. Thanks for the reply.

@dm9739
@dm9739 4 года назад
Will it protect from mold?
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 4 года назад
Yes, P100 is the recommended level of protection from mold spores. Depending on the application, you may also want organic vapor protection. Actively growing mold produces a variety of organic compounds, and those would pass through unhindered by a filter alone. Please look at the 3M 2097 as an alternative.
@pksafetysupply
@pksafetysupply 12 лет назад
The only difference is a thin layer of charcoal. This is meant to absorb so-called nuisance organic vapors. In practice this includes bad smells and low levels of solvents for instance. So both filters are rated P100 / HEPA, and will filter out very fine toxic dusts. For mold, we sometimes run across active growth. This produces organic vapors and that characteristic mold smell. Here is where the 2097 would come in handy. The actual mold spores will be stopped by either filter.

Could you please let me know if 3M 6003 Organic Vapour/Acid Gas filter can protect from H1N1 or Corona Virus also? I understand that 2091 P100 mask is specially for viruses however, what I am not able to understand if 6003 has type of cushion to block oil and gas particles then why it won't stop viruses particles....
@rickpedley1099
@rickpedley1099 4 года назад
The 3M 6003 cartridge operates on a different principle. Chemical cartridges are filled with a specially treated granulated charcoal. This absorbs, rather than filters, the air drawn through them. Think in terms of a sponge. Filters on the other hand act as strainers. They trap particles through a combination of static electric charge (like rubbing a balloon against your hair) and very fine filter media. Particles and mists at the very small size we are concerned with will mostly pass through a cartridge.
