To be fair, Ive never seen a person in my career with so many back to back accidents either. A lot of jobs would let you go. It doesn't matter on if you got hit by a car or not.

Judging from this recording, it feels like this was not even about accidents or sick leaves. They just didn't like your personality and she's right when she says it's who you are, you can't improve. I wouldn't be able to change my personality either.

This is true, if you listened to the full meeting in part 2, they somewhat implied that they were not happy, technically them telling her the quality of your work is an issue is them telling her they are not happy. Their fault is not saying it out loud an straight forward...she somewhat also cut them off and spoke over them. She is doing the same here as well. They were not a fit, but unfair dismissal is unfair dismissal. Stick to the contract.

She would not be liked in most Asian work places. Her attitude of arguing back, giving excuses etc not considering how her leave taking etc affected the students and school etc is very off putting.
@nesadcruz7840

@@AnnaMuzaza how it is unfair? She was not performing. Frankly, in many Asian countries you can terminate an employee with less than 1 month notice for not submitting work on time and arguing with superiors the way she did. With foreigners the employer can cancel their Pass immediately in Singapore , I know as I hired foreigners. The recordings If played , showing her refusal to cut her nails would be enough grounds because the school, could easily say it is a safety concern. Should she accidentally scratch one of the kids , the parents can sue the school. If the kids were older it would be different but she was teaching very young kids. Also her refusal to listen to feedback and change are obvious in her conversation with Janet. Moreover at the second meeting she was given notice not asked to go immediately.

I am an older Asian-American ESL teacher that taught for 2 years in Korea then 7 in Thailand so I've been in this profession, in Asia for nearly a decade. I pointed out my ethnicity because it came with a lot of racism since I don't fit the look of a "native" teacher since I am Asian. So even before I landed any teaching jobs, I was already up against an uphill battle with a lot of schools. Anyway, I'm no stranger to the ESL industry and dealing with difficult managers and supervisors. And after having watched all 3 parts of your China saga, I will say that I don't think teaching in Asia is a good fit for you, just in case you're thinking of returning to Asia to teach in the future. I think your attitude, thought process and behavior is more suited for perhaps Europe where their culture is more used to strong personalities like yours. The biggest lesson I've learned in teaching ESL for a decade in Asia is that you have to know which battles to pick and when to give up. Not because you're a weak person or a doormat but because for the sake of your sanity and peace of mind. During my 10 yrs of teaching, I was fired 3x. I was so glad I was fired because after each firing, I found much better jobs. I've learned that rejection is not always a negative thing that everyone tends to make it out to be. I am not everyone's cup of tea and vice-versa and that's ok. I honestly feel that the vice-principal was being quite nice when she spoke with you. I'd faced way ruder school personnel than her and yet I wasn't as feisty like you were. I mean I get why you're so indignant that they never officially warned you but Chinese people do not handle confrontations well. And they know you'd fly off the handle if they were to say "Hey this is your warning." They just didn't want a fight with you and I don't blame them. I hope you take what everyone has said in the comments to learn and improve. And if you don't want to, that's ok too.

@@annak2756 well articulated there. She did get the warning in part 2 of the series from Janet. But she was, again, very defensive. Not willing to take accountability and very dismissive. I don’t believe that the VP was manipulative at all. She sounded like someone who was stuck between trying not to get Nolu upset by being direct and also being professional as the school leader. Finally, this is a business. If parents feedback is negative then the teacher has got to go.

They definitely gave you hints, before they let you go. Also I think it’s imperative to always discern when people are giving you constructive criticism and when they’re just being ignorant to your efforts.(the parents asking for more time to communicate with you.) The thing about Chinese is that they’re naturally hard working people and they really do believe in overtime. So I think the fact that you had issues with voicing out your opinion on multiple occasions, they probably felt like you weren’t mouldable to be what they wanted you to be.😭 Haish Chinese are an issue sometimes.

Sadly, I agree that Janet did give you a warning at that last meeting. I also think that during that last recorded meeting you were on the defense and wasn’t open to the constructive criticism that they gave you. In the United States when we are under contract employment, we sometimes have something called a probational warning or write up. This is a warning where the manager and employee must sign a document stating the warning and acknowledging receipt of the warning. It’s to avoid this type of situation and protects both the employer and employee from this type of confusion. This school should implement that. Also, It’s a personality thing. It happens sometimes at jobs where it just won’t workout due to culture of the office and personality clash. I think it has happened to everyone at least once where we leave a job or let go due to this.

I had a similar situation working in Taiwan. I quickly realized that they want foreign teachers to "act like clowns". You are there as a teacher but also as entertainment. They expect way more from foreign teachers than local teachers. Basically, your job is to make the kids interested in English. They are also not very direct in their communication. Usually, they just gossip about you instead of giving the much needed feedback.

I have so much to say, but I'll keep it simple. This was a toxic workplace. While many schools have unrealistic expectations for kids, there was a personal dislike towards you. Even if you followed through got those kids to write and read out loud they would still have an issue. These kindergartens in China are often plagued by politics. If they like you and parents like you, you can get away with almost anything. You wouldn’t even need to defend the time you took off for all the accidents. They would’ve posted it on every billboard that teacher Lulu from class three fell and it was the most devastating thing and showered you with support. Moving forward, leave at the first red flag. To those who might say you were defensive or didn't adapt, they won't understand until they've experienced it themselves. I am an excellent teacher and I also worked at a similar place to the job you described. Bwoyyy did they use me in those first few months😭😂. With four teachers in my class, I was doing the lion's share of the work. Luckily, I had the support of my colleagues and parents whenever they would try to undermine me, or come to me about frivolous complaints….plus by then I knew how to play the game. I've lived in China for over eight years. I understand their culture, feedback practices, and expectations. Even if you weren't communicating or receiving feedback their way, you didn't deserve that treatment. I wish you all the best in the future. Next time you see a red flag, run, and always trust your gut. There are lots of better jobs in China, you'd be surprised. And when starting a new job in a foreign country, make a friend who can guide you through the workplace culture and expectations. They can also provide a realistic picture of the job to help you decide if it's the right fit or tell you straight up to run. Sending you healing energies. You're a strong woman. Very strong!"

Similar thing happened to me in Britain. Their culture is way less straightforward then mine. When I had a meeting with my manager he literally said he is very happy with my performance and praised me for 10 minutes then made a brief comment about some little things here and there need some improvement but other than that you're perfect. I left the meeting thinking I was doing great then a week later I was put ont a performance improvement plan and if I don't pass it I get fired. When I asked my manager about it he was like ''but I told you those things need improvement''. In my culture if I'm doing so bad they're thinking about firing me I wouldn't get a 10 minutes praise I would only get this: If you don't improve this within x timeframe we will have to fire you.

You created the narrative your way then presented the evidence which doesn't quite 🤔 add up. 2. Cultures are different. If you can't communicate (culturally) then you should have had someone speak for you. Because your tone wasn't respectful. She felt defeated. She knew she couldn't talk to you because you were on defense. 3. Learn to read the room. You could have just left your contract if you didn't want to be there but you let your ego run. They bent over to accommodate you when all went wrong. I think you could have taken more accountability and just spoken more calmly. 4. Does anyone deserve to get beat, NO NEVER

I applaud you for standing up for yourself but as for someone who grew up in Asia, and this is not to be mean, you come off a bit rude at times. I think that's why they didn't even want to try. You gotta know when to just let it go or pick your battles because in alot of Asian cultures once you've had quite a combative conversation like in your recordings, there's almost no coming back. Meaning, professionally they will try to still be polite to you, but personally they will despise you. Unless you have a very strong personal connection to them already, it's very risky to be frank and combative. You won't win as a lone foreigner without strong local connections. I'm african and my whole family has worked in Asia, so I know what I'm talking about. I also grew up here so I kind of see why they react this way to you. Even like your nervous laugh when you were explaining yourself (which i totally understand) came off a bit rude and almost like you're mocking them + telling them how to do their job. Another note: unfortunately africans or black ppl in general are perceived as being aggressive here sometimes, so once you give them even a hint of aggression, they will go back to any stereotypes they've had in their mind right away. When I'm with my african friends or extended family sometimes I feel like they are so combative and aggressive but that's just because I've been here so long lol there's just a difference in culture and communication

I REALLY wanted to be on Nolu's side 100%, but I can't...not completely. But of course...there is NO EXCUSE for it to get physical. That dude should've gone to jail for that.

Apart from covering costs the owner also needs to make profit. Every day you were off you were costing them extra, legitimate or not. Those conversations happen in any corporate. Most employers expect you to be a 'team player' and acknowledge this. You didn't and worse still that you were still new, you hadnt yet in their view, earned your stripes. I feel that "communicatation" is what I get from this. On both sides I see "Expectations" but no communication. Nolu is more factual and wants communication with no "Sugar coating" while the school is more "hints" but not direct. Though I understand whatever level you are in the work environment, there is always making employers feel "comfortable" in the work environment. Even in the US here it's the same, they will give feedback on what to do but not direct saying "your work is not good". At the end of the day the people managing have to follow what their "upper management" wants. This video is definitely a snicky situation and I understand where you come from in a factual point of view. Sometimes I have to learn to ask questions of my improvements, I open up conversations even early meetings asking "is there anything I need to improve on" "is there something that I'm doing that is not up to xyz standards" Just to see if they willing to honest early on and to show that [Hey, they are the type of person who wants factual and honest statement] I tend to play this card with my uppermanagement to show I don't want "sugarcoating. Anyway, this is kind of the norm in most working environment. Gotta play your cards early+

Performance Management is a subject matter that most managers struggle with. Sometimes they don't want to give honest feedback because they don't know how it will be received. Contracts usually put an onus on the manager to give feedback, but sometimes is better to set up feedback sessions yourself. That will show them that you don't mind receiving feedback. However, it sounds like they didn't like your personality from the day you landed. Hence they were not even interested to give you feedback.

Secondly you are interrupting them while speaking and emphasising your view point by force almost. I think as expats we need to be aware of work cultures. The Chinese are not people who speak directly when they call you for a meeting or address a concern that is them giving you a verbal warning. In your previous video you had mentioned that you prepared work for the substitute teacher a day before or before the start of the day. This work practice is not satisfactory and causes problems. When is the teacher going to prep the materials ? Your lessons should be planned a week in advance incase of accidents and so forth. Personally for me we go abroad thinking we are able to teach and we know classroom dynamics with just a TEFL certificate however this profession is deeper than that.

As a former ESL teacher for 20 years, originally from Zimbabwe and having lived in Greece for the past 30 years, I recognize the significant role cultural differences play in Nolu's experience at the Chinese school. After listening to the entire conversation with Janet in part 2 and this one in part 3, I personally wouldn't be concerned with the issues raised, as similar conversations could easily take place in a school or business setting in Greece. However, coming from Zimbabwe, I can also understand why Nolu had different expectations and found certain things unsettling. To be honest, I noticed many things were off when I was in Zimbabwe too, but that was due to my own expectations shaped by my time in Greece. Living in another country requires adapting to their cultural mindset and respecting it, regardless of how different it may be from what we're accustomed to. However, there are clear boundaries that should never be crossed, no matter the cultural differences, and one such boundary is physical violence. The fact that Nolu was punched by the HR manager is shocking and absolutely unacceptable in any environment. Cultural clashes aside, physical assault goes beyond a misunderstanding or a difference in expectations-it's a violation of personal dignity and professional ethics. This kind of behavior cannot be tolerated, regardless of the circumstances. It indicates a much deeper problem in the work environment and leadership.

But in this case her boss literally said “ you should take better care of yourself” after she got ran off the road and had to take leave. Knowing she’s a foreigner they should have been fully transparent with her stop any miscommunication as the employer … so you can stop trying to gaslight her all over again ✌🏾.

Calling people aggressive and pompous is not racist unless you think that black women are indeed aggressive and pompous. Or just want to justify being this way.

I don't understand why you were fighting for a job you no longer wanted. This was a bad fit both ways and a toxic situation and the solution she gave you was kind of the clean one. You could have dusted yourself off and found a better place. There is absolutely no excuse for the HR punching you and the visa situation wasnt great either but you were also not an agreeable person in many instances. Its important to understand the culture of a place, not just the organisation but the country too, and also to remember what our goals are. I also understand that by this recording, you were tired and frustrated but you also weren't respectful, you are argumentative, you speak over her and worse still you recorded her secretly and have now published it. In many instances you were indeed a victim, but im not sure this recording is doing you any favours. Any future employers that see this may be scared. Not to say China would probably never let you in again.

After listening to this conversation it was not a winning situation. I did not feel anger from the employer instead it seemed like the relation with you and the school was not working out. I don't know how deep the problem was obviously but I do know that small things can add up. I'm an American living in California I think here the employer would have just paid out the contract especially since it was such a short time and let you go. Right or Wrong I would have said my peace, Take my money and left.

I was angry yes and I was angry because for 9 months I worked there and there was never a single complaint; not from them and not from a single parent. Parents pull kids away when they don’t like the teacher, I had the exact same number of kids I when I left. Even during the parents evaluation, they gave good feedback and only noting that I needed to pay attention to the quiet kids. I knew they were pulling a rabbit out of a hat with their sudden „you’re not a fit“ at the end of the semester

Learning “ Alphabets”? There is only one Alphabet in the English language with 26 Letters. Am taken aback you as an English teacher arent aware of this. Btw, it was obvious from what Janet said that you were underperforming .Why did you not get it? It was crystal clear to us listening, are you in denial?

For all who need to know: #1. The contract between the employer and employee is binding. If warnings are given, the employer needs evidence wherein a dispute occurs, which is standard practice in any court. A recorded account, whether written or else, is necessary to qualify as a warning *in court*. #2. According to Article 26 of the Labor Law of the People’s Republic of China, employers must submit written revocation 30 days in advance. For those of you inclined on listening to trolls in a comments section who uses ad hominem attacks and unfettered rudeness as their only defense, please take the time to find a lawyer who knows what he or she is talking about. Sadly, I suspect that there is a bit of disinformation happening in this space, despite Nolu’s honest effort at educating the public. Know the law *and* (not or) find a lawyer who knows it better than you.

Thank you! Many of these people have never worked in ESL so to them it’s easy to say I was warned and should have left. What they do not understand is that if I had left, I also had limited time to pack up and leave the country as my work permit and residence permit would be cancelled. My job had monthly evaluations to evaluate teacher‘s performances. The lowest score I ever got was 93 despite being so „bad“ at my job😂 It is such a common practice in ESL to fire teachers for no reason if it benefits the school financially and I would later find out this was the exact reason why they were trying to fire me.

Wow, wow, wow! I was in disbelief, I kept asking myself if this was a prank or something. How did she think this was a logical way to fire someone? She just kept tryna come up with excuses and contradicting herself. The part where she says that they didn't give you any feedback because the issue wasn't something that she thought you could fix, that the problem was your personality. Never knew someone could get fired because of their personality.

I have watched all 3 videos after seeing you with a black eye. The first one shocked me that they wanted you to pay the fine, but then, when you played the conversation between you and the supervisor, I was a bit shocked. Your supervisor was giving you feedback, yet you became very defensive and gave excuses about everything. Sure, there may be reasons why you didn't do what they wanted, but then, instead of giving excuses as to why, it would be much better to ask how the supervisor could support you in achieving what it is they want you to do. Either they are going to show you exactly what they want or they are going to see that it's impossible. People in the comments are saying it's a Chinese thing- but I can tell you after teaching in the USA for 30 years, it's also a USA thing. Janet tried to tell you how you could improve in the second video, but you weren't that receptive to it. I don't think it's really about the accidents. I think they didn't like your teaching style and the fact that you are not a reflective teacher when Janet was providing feedback. By the way, a warning does not have to be stern. Plus, how can they tell you something when you keep interrupting? I'm pretty sure that you are the one who is being manipulative in this past conversation. The school also needs to learn that feedback should be given IN WRITING.

They literally fired you for experiencing multiple accidents which were not your fault. But it also seems they expected you to not stay home per Dr's suggestion. This lady just didn't like you and she kind of said so, indirectly. Be proud that you stood up for yourself. Sometimes people push you to drop the niceties and this was that case.
