welcome back to Nerd Theory, today let's talk about the recent news about Rian Johnson wanting to direct The Mandalorian and more news in Star Wars this week. Welcome my co-host and buddy Josh from The Den of Nerds
One tip for these 3hr long videos, add timestamps/captions on the scrubber bar. It allows us (the viewers) to know when you are talking about certain things...because honestly, people like me don't have 3 hrs to watch the whole video.
*If 02x08 was directed by R.J* Mando dies sitting in the elevator, Grogu leaves to some lone island, After winning epic fight with Gideon Bo-Katan throws the darksaber out of airlock, at the end of the episode Luke's x-wing smashes against the cruiser's shields with dead Luke inside.
@@krispyskywalker7449 Exactly my friend. Almost everyone died in Rogue One too, but no one criticized it because it was meaningful and part of a bigger cause. The only thing that could've been that powerful in EP VIII would've been if Finn had sacrificed himself as he had planned, which was again ruined to sUbVeRt expectations.
YES! Same! I just wish they would stick with who they have and allow those directors to grow their craft and gain even more experience. The liability with Rian Johnson is he might not be a team player, he might not want to stick to the overall plan and may want to change certain things. Remember how he just killed off Snoke cause he didn't know what to do with him? Or how he even changed the positioning of Kylo's facial scar just cause he did'nt like how it was straight throught the middle of his face. Thats the kind of things im wary of with Rian Johnson working on the Mando series. That is Jon Favreau's show! HE WROTE and CREATED IT!!! Why can't Rian just screw off and go work on his own thing, oh yeh hes supposed to be doing that already wasn't he?
I hate Rian and think Last Jedi is shit but come on that’s a lil over the top Jon and Dave would still be doing the story he would just be filming the shots
He really couldn’t do that much. Dave and Jon wouldn’t let him do anything that bad, and although I didn’t like TLJ these reactions are over the top in my opinion
Can't wait until he directs another Star Wars, I loved The Last Jedi. It's my favorite but I understand how someone wouldn't enjoy it. Just don't act like your opinion is fact, thanks.🤷🏼♀️
@@suribuxton9079 the majority dont want him to touch another star wars project and facts are that he more than likely won’t. The FACT is the overgrown man baby had his chance and blew it spectacularly because he’s nothing more than mediocre and never will be. Anyone who’s main purpose when making/directing a film is to make it divisive isn’t a very good director/film maker. He got what he wanted which just shows how shit he truly is. Sorry but the fact is Ryan wont be touching another star wars project because he had his chance and failed miserably lol
This video - “Ryan Johnson wants to direct the mandalorian” Me laughing and crushes phone - “like that’ll ever happen, ugh, what a load of-“ flushes toilet
If he’s directing an episode of the show, don’t worry because he won’t have creative control over the writing. The people in control are the showrunners
@Yoda Yeah Last Jedi was a writing disaster but if Rian is just directing, it’ll be fine because like I said, people who direct episodes of television aren’t given creative control over the writing. The ones with control are the showrunners, and he’s not one of them. Last Jedi was a disaster because Rian wrote it with no understanding of the lore. Rian can be a good writer with something like Knives Out, meaning that he can be a good writer when he’s writing something original.
Now we can see Luke drink blue titty milk 20 years before The Last Jedi. How great is that! On a serious note. Knives out was pretty cool though. If Rian Johnson has some direction from someone who knows and loves the lore maybe just maybe he can direct a good episode. Just my opinion.
@Abdullah Mustafa Well yeah if Dave and John are there with the guide as those guys said, but considering what he's done with TLJ and what he might end up doing(you know, cuz we don't fully comprehend the structure of this filming business) I'm not into it. And yes I might be judging someone with his worst mistake not his great works but as long as it's about SW I don't think he deserves a chance here. At all.
@Abdullah Mustafa That may be what you expect, but that's not what I see happening. Yes I may seem too negative but I do have my point. Just too worried about the fate of the only series that turned out good after the ST...
he was actually the one that talked about him directing an episode.People love to paint a simple picture of Filoni being the hero of star wars and Johnson being the villain. Its obviously not that simple and for the record, Johnson did great in the last Jedi.
@@starwarsorsomething5703 Directing Includes how the writing is interpreted. TLJ acting was not good at all (Non of the sequels was great, TFA was fine, it made a good Segway for greater things, but then they ruined it. But ya, He wouldn't be writing it
@@starwarsorsomething5703 Yeah, I wish they would've consulted George throughout though, that would've made them consistent, he knows SW like no other, duh he made it. What i would've like happen in the making 1. Send the draft script to George (tell him that the dialogue is a no touch zone lol) 2. Bring him in a few times on set 3. Have him visit for 50% of the editing (This was his favorite part) 4. Have a plan before making 3 movies!!!
@@starwarsorsomething5703 And most SW fans hate them, they don't bring in a ton of money, ATTACK OF THE CLONES SCORES BETTER ON IMDB (I actually like Attack.. love dialogue kinda weird though) All they have to do to make ALL fans happy is put it on a different timeline, choose it if we want, and make it so either choice doesn't mess up any stories.
@@starwarsorsomething5703 It's not a case of confusing directing with writing, it's wanting to prevent Rian from both directing and creating Star Wars content again. Rian didn't write the script for TLJ, but he was apparently given pretty free reign with creating it. Not writing per se but taking a hand in the outline and concepts that would have been given to the writers to flesh out.
@@starwarsorsomething5703 Thank you for the correction. I was under the impression there was a different screenwriter. I agree with you also, that the cast was great. Especially Adam Driver and John Boyega. I'm not sure any other actors could have salvaged so much from their characters.
There's a time and place for everything, and the phrase (in my opinion) is equally applicable to Rian Johnson's filmmaking style. Sure, Last Jedi was very controversial, but considering how successful/clever Knives Out was, surely, Rian can be trusted with a (non) mainstream Star Wars story, correct?
@@topnotchshinobi as long as it’s not an episode that’s integral to the overall story and the Star Wars canon like the season 2 finale was I’d be fine with it
They provide cgi pre-visualizations for the directors, the episodes are already written. His shots look great but his choreography is really weak and the fight choreography on Mando isn't great in the first place.
In Rian Johnson’s episode of mando: -grogu turns out to be female (and dies in hyperspace crash lol) -mando dies for no reason sitting on rock EDIT: HIS EPISODE WILL BE ABOUT HOW LUKE STARTED BEING DUMB AND HOBO JAKE SKYWALKER connecting to The Last Jedi. He must destroy true, epic Luke Skywalker we had in last episode of mando.
@@petrsvoboda1895 What does it matter ? It's Ruin Johnson . As far as I'm concerned he wants to wipe his ass with Star Wars and flush it down the toilet.
how tha fuck. the guy ruins everything he touches I don't even know how he's still directing anything The dude is worse than Joss Wheadon a lot worse and that's saying something
@@thewatchersdidnothingwrong7702 I mean obviously if we can see Disney is losing money by ostracizing their fan base and promoting political propaganda, they can too. Which means they are doing it on purpose. Crying about it won’t change anything, clearly they have their motives.

I love when you guys actually talk about star wars lore, stories, theorys, characters, etc.but less about behind the seens drama and fan community drama
@The DisaStarWars Yeah, that's fair. I was just thinking based on his past works, it makes a lot of sense. I'm fairly certain he will do a great job. It will be different, but definitely in a good way.
Exactly. I'm so sick of this BS being thrown around as proof that people can't criticise RJ. He also made The Brothers Bloom, that was got really mixed reviews. I wish people would look at his career with context.
"12y olds would love Geodude" Nah, even little kids have some standards. They won't play with a rock just because you say to them a rock is cool character
The director’s they had in S1/S2 are perfect. Why mess with chemistry. Johnson lost all rights to star wars after his debacle with the sequels. In my opinion of course
I mean they had like a different director for each episode. I’m quite sure even if he did direct an episode or two, the show would be just fine in the long run
@@zaab-yaoh9302 nope nope nope!!! Each one of those directors were a great fit. I get what you’re saying but nope! The way he treated mark Hamil..... he should never be allowed to have another chance in the Star Wars universe!! Or at least with any project filoni and favreau work on.
Can't wait for Ryan Johnson to direct an episode of Mandalorian where he's subverts our expectation and gets din djarin to kill baby grogou in his sleep 🤡
I hate the argument that star wars is for kids. The way I see it George sees 12 year olds more mature being able to understand a story and handel darker themes. Same goes for Clone Wars it's dark and yes it's geared for a kids but at the time Lucas believed that kids could handle more grown up themes.
Quality childrens content has something for kids and adults. Aladdin, Beauty and the beast, Lion King etc etc are all kids media but companies know that what they offer adults is easily half their earnings.
Yeah George meant there were life lessons for young adults. These people say that Star Wars is for children but then want to use it as a platform for their woke politics. Can't have it both ways.
I really don't want Rian touching Mandalorian at all, but if it happens he should only direct it and follow Jon and Dave's vision. Do not let him write an episode. I don't wanna see Luke milk a creature and drink green milk again.
Knives Out also demonstrated that Rian's subversive storytelling (which didn't pan out for Last Jedi) can work in the right time and place, so perhaps redirect his talents to "The Acolyte"? (which promises to be a Sith-centered thriller of sorts)
To bad if that’s not what you wanna see, that’s what your GONNA see!!ps I’m wearing a trench coat with nothing on underneath and I’m at your door with it wide open!!

The Last Jedi is the first Star Wars movie that i haven't bought a physical copy of. I was going to go see Knives out when it came out when when i saw Rian's name on the poster i just noped it. Will never conciously watch anything he's made ever again.
I love that these conversations are being had, thank you to you all! I feel like the fandom is exactly how I felt after I saw TLJ. I’ve never been so confused on how I felt about a movie, I’ve loved star wars since I can remember, it’s literally my first memory. I took about 6 other family members with me to see the movie as I was so excited from what was being built, the seeds that were planted in TFA, I wanted to enjoy it with my loved ones. I knew I should love the movie, it’s labelled as Star Wars, it looked like Star Wars, but at the end of the movie I just felt empty and confused, I should have loved it, it looked beautiful. I can’t even watch the Disney trilogy now, it just feels empty and unfinished
You’re describing 100% how I felt when I saw TLJ in theaters. I was confused on how I felt about it, which never happened with any other Star Wars movie, including Episode II (which is still much better than TLJ). Plus I was falling asleep while I was watching, which never happens to me for any movie I watch in theaters no matter how bad, which goes to show how truly terrible TLJ is. I went home and told my wife I liked it, yet it felt like I was trying to convince myself that I did. The next day I kept thinking of the movie and realizing how stupid certain parts were or how a lot of it didn’t make sense or downright disrespected the lore. Eventually I realized that I actually hate the movie.
@@CyrussNP yup I went through the convincing myself stage. Took about a week, I spoke to a bunch of friends and colleagues that are fans and they were saying exactly what I felt. I’ve only seen it once since
Also every time Choco speaks he proves his own point wrong and it’s so painful. Respect ya but ya wrong. Normalize telling people that you can have your opinion. It’s not the correct opinion. But it’s an opinion.
I think that Rian Johnson coupled with Jon and Dave is an incredible idea. Rian is fantastic director. Knives Out, Looper, all his episodes of Breaking Bad, every music video he's done, they're all great! Couple that with Dave and Jon's vision for Star Wars and you have yourself something truly special.
"rain is really good at cinematography" Rian: "u know what would be cool? A room thats all red! Red makes everything more cool! Every 12y old would agree! Lets make red stormtroopers! Also lets replace the general outfit with a prom dress and purple hair!"
@Abdullah Mustafa No, its not cool. Want to see a smart use of colors? Look at Breaking Bad. Making everything red is only cool if your belowe the age of 10. I get your point, but it dosn't justify making a whole room red... with red guards... and red everything... like cmon, have some creativity for god sake. That was probably the worst set I ever seen (fallowed by one of the worst fight scenes I ever seen) The whole issues with sequel trelogy is the lack of creativity. Just look at all the aircrafts and vehicles. Everything looks like it was designed by a 10y kid with a box of old SW toys. "ATATs are cool, lets make them bigger and meaner! make them look like angry gorillas!" "lets make stromtroopers red cause red is cool" etc
Meanwhile in the other Star Wars films: Lucas: "You know what would be cool? Red Stormtroopers guarding the Emperor! Because red makes everything more cool! And rooms that are all black! And let's put Princess Leia in a bikini, because sexy! And give Padme ridiculous hairdos!"
Ruin Johnson already had a chance to write Luke Skywalker, and he failed in the most epic fashion. He then proceeded to attack fans who disliked his movie. He has done nothing to deserve another chance
Rian wanting to direct the Mandalorian? This is not the way, I’m just glad he didn’t get the chance to ruin the book of boba fett as he’s my favourite character
@@starwarssatan5588 that’s just the opening sequence buddy I really don’t wanna give away to many secrets right now,but as it is No SECRET that I plan to ruin it and then blame you the fans!!p.s.tell your mom I said what’s up baby 😉
Please keep Johnson out of Star Wars. Please. That’s all I’m asking. He’s not a bad guy but he’s a terrible director. No. Happy birthday to the best Jedi and SITH lord out there! Can’t wait to see Hayden in Kenobi!!! Miss him in the movies, such a good actor.
On TLJ: I think Rey should have been a Kenobi, Luke passes Obi-wans knowledge on to Rey, Luke and Rey fight together against Snoke and defeat him. Episode 9 villain is the clone of Snoke. On down voting and comments on High Republic videos: Essentially they are a protests against LucasFilm's behavior towards employees and fans, we can't vote for who is in charge of Star Wars so we need an outlet to show when we are unhappy.
I feel Jon and Dave have to write the story for the episode that Rian will direct. Can we trust Rian to not mess up? I feel this is a decision for Jon & Dave!!
Seriously, Josh is very wishy washy. Take a stance. Don't just agree and disagree on everything. Clearly you know Disney is watching you and I can see he doesn't want to piss them off, so he tempers his criticism.
I think a lot of Star Wars you tubers will get hate whatever they say or whenever they take a side, and while I agree that Josh should just say his real thoughts, I understand him not wanting to deal with all The hate and backlash
Rian Johnson could direct the best episode of the Mandalorian ever, and I'd still think the Last Jedi was awful. His other projects have been good but they won't change how he wrote that movie and the decisions he made with the story and the characters
He’ll divide the fans with just one episode. Him making JJ change the ending of the 7th movie and him destroying the set up for 8 and causing JJ to rush everything for number 9 destroyed the sequel trilogy.
Lauren is absolutely on point about. about not watching Mandalorian. I love the Mandalorian but i am living in constant fear that the series ends in the sequels.
No, Josh. Rian does not deserve a second chance when it comes to Star Wars. His attitude towards the franchise went above and beyond making mistakes. Forget his attitude towards the fans and remember the little things he is tied to as well, not just with his treatment of Luke. Remember what happened to Admiral Ackbar and how his actor was treated on set. Rian is your typical Hollywood guy. He may have talent but at his core it's all about him. He thrives off attention, he wants to be remembered. He's egotism personified. Edit: Damn it, you'd think I'd know Josh's name by now when it's LITERALLY on the screen but yeah, fixed. XD
I wish Josh had never joined the channel. He just talks in riddles. Half defends RJ and TLJ then backtracks and agrees with theory. And doesn't stop saying you know what I mean... Arrrrr. Lol...
@@jedifonz7684 It's running gag at this point when he says 'you know what I mean'. Never fails to not say it once per three or so sentences... if we're lucky. =P Ah, I don't mind the guy but you're not wrong. I honestly get a lot more out of watching Theory team up with Jay and G&G Jeremy because they make fun chemistry.
Rian Johnson knew EXACTLY what he was doing when tore Star Wars in half, they all did. It's even in the dialogue, the line "Kill the past". It seems he enjoys trolling the fandom as well, reveling in the schism his work created and delighting in the negativity that it draws.
No. Absolutely not. Don’t even want to chance giving Rian Johnson an episode to direct. He’s proven with 3 movies he can’t do Star Wars. I don’t care what else he has done well if he’s proven Star Wars is not his thing, especially when we have Fav and Filoni doing a fantastic job
God, the fact that higher-ups messed up with choice for the position of director doesn't mean that Rian, full grown man, isn't responsible for things he does. It's called zero accountability.
Why would anyone want RJ on any Star Wars Project he almost destroyed Star Wars as we know it .... Sit Down RJ Besides the current directors have been amazing ... they need to continue
Please don't let Ruin Jackson anywhere near Mando... He'll fuck it up... He'll either end threads prematurely, screw up Luke again, or make some bullshit that doesn't follow the Lore... He's made it very clear he doesn't know Star Wars >.>...
Here’s a somewhat neutral opinion. Rian Johnson may not be a bad director. I have only seen TLJ and Knives Out from him. I thought KO was pretty good, but hated TLJ. He wouldn’t be writing the script, so at the very least, the story should be the same. The production might dwindle, but only for that episode. The rest of the season should still be fine. The bigger problem is, I don’t think he **deserves** to touch the Mandalorian, and piggy back off of its success. Not after how he treated a whole movie. I *especially* don’t want him trying to change certain things to push his and Kathleen Kennedy’s political and social agenda into the Mandalorian. He can stay with her and together they can ruin the galaxy, far, far away from Filoni’s and Favreau’s creations of course.
Why does nobody talk about Knights of the Old Republic games and Star Wars games in general when it comes to non-canon stuff? Those games brought more value to the Star Wars universe than both the prequels and sequels combined.
honestly listening to Lauren's reasoning about why she doesnt watch the mandalorian is like listening to gwyneth paltrow explaining the logic behind her Goop products
I'm so glad that two of my favorite RU-vidrs do this every week! Personal life has made it where I haven't got to join in the actual live streams lately but thank God for my off day on Tuesday and the recordings of this. Also, I don't want Johnson anywhere near Star Wars again and I honestly don't think it's going to happen
Star wars fans learn the difference between directing and writing challenge. If Rian was to direct an episode, he would be given a script for it probably written by Jon Favreau or someone
@@Ivan_Berni once again you are failing to differentiate writing and directing. If he was just directing, you wouldn't have to worry about him putting meaning in everything since that would be up to the writer and not him
@@sebastian6845 Sometimes the director is more important than the scrip, a good director can make a good movie with a bad script, a bad director cant make a good movie even with a good script, and Rian is an asshole, he will fuck it up even if the best writter do the script, because he is selfish and egocentric.
@@sebastian6845 dont care if he’s writing, directing or fucking the main cast. The majority of fans dont want that over grown man baby near star wars. He had his shot and utterly blew it.
When it comes to the down voting in my opinion it has nothing to do with the High Republic! I couldn't care less about it. It's about the hypocrisy, it's about Gina Carano, it's about everything Disney/Lucasfilm has done!
Please, for the sake of all that is holy and good in this world, DO NOT let Rian Johnson direct an episode of the Mandalorian! He will rake the show through the mud! He ruined the last Star Wars trilogy with the Last Jedi. The For e Awakens was great, and had amazing potential. But Rian ruined it.
I think the only good things Johnson has done are the episodes of _Breaking Bad_ that he directed... everything else he’s done, at least major film-wise, was also written by him. so... I could entertain the idea that Johnson is actually a good director, just a terrible writer. maybe he could make a good episode of _The Mandalorian,_ given a script written by Favreau or others?
@@alexander-ru4gd - _Knives Out_ is incredibly overrated... the first act was fun and intriguing, the rest was just sh*t. it was like shallow political cartoon wrapped in a cheesy mystery story, with a silly Daniel Craig accent thrown on top. I enjoyed _Brick_ when it came out, when I was a dumb teenager... I tried to rewatch it recently, and I found it pretentious and obnoxious and annoying (but maybe so am I?). never seen _Brothers Bloom,_ so I won’t comment. and you didn’t mention it, but _Looper_ has a semi-neat world with a potentially interesting premise, but came out rather silly and simplistic and underwhelming. and the Bruce Willis prosthetics on Joseph Gordon-Levitt didn’t help things... my read on Rian Johnson is that he thinks he’s really sophisticated and incisive and deep and _subversive,_ when in reality he most certainly isn’t, similar to a Neill Blomkamp. I think Mr. Plinkett put it best when he said the script for _TLJ_ felt like “a script written by a high school student, but a really smart student who worked on their script really really hard.”
@@alexander-ru4gd Getting a nomination is more about whether a studio puts together an awards campaign. It got annihilated by Parasite. Both in awards and critic ratings. @1:12:13: I just like to point out that the Skywalker name is genetic...the reason why that name is so important is because it was a lineage of a family that was not only very strongly connected to the force but also a family that was genetically artificially created by the force or someone else. To sit there and say that Rey is a Skywalker is just a slap in the face because you are saying that "anyone can use the force" or "anyone can become a Skywalker", which is a complete joke. It's Disney trying to say to all the kids "you can be whatever you want to be", BS! You can't in Star Wars, you are born with a certain amount of midichlorians and only the gifted can use it.
