Pacing is a term we hear of frequently whenever we read a review. We might have even commented on it ourselves. Some movies are so quick that we feel little investment in the events or characters. Others are so slow that we find ourselves struggling to remain awake. How does a film achieve that perfect balance?
In this video, we explore styles of writing, direction, cinematography, and action to attempt to understand the concept of pacing. We then utilize specific recent films as examples of each idea.

I think it's a mix of both, how fast story beats come at the viewer and the edit, if you think about Baby Driver, the editing is quick, and action scenes come at you every 10 minutes, whereas something like Stalker would hold a shot for 8 minutes with no editing, holding on one thing. Also (just an opinion) but I think slow pacing is a great thing. Something like Jeanne Dielman, 3 hours and 30 minutes of the same few scenes 3 times. The film works, because it's soooo slow and long so SPOILERS, when she snapped and kills her customer, it has more impact. Good Slow Pacing: Mirror (1975) (about 90 minutes) Stalker (1979) (about 3 hours) Jeanne Dielman (about 3 hours and 20 minutes) 2001: A Space Odyssey (about 2 hours and 30 minutes) Eraserhead (about 90 minutes) Good Fast Pacing: Baby Driver Hot Fuzz Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie The Lego Movie Kill Bill vol. 1

I'm having some trouble pacing my story right now (doesn;t help i'm a month past my deadline, still less than halfway done) the insights on building up character and world *around* violence, and keeping violence to a minimum to give it maximum impact, as well as the note that torture scenes, after showing it explicitly, need to be implied or exhaust the audience and therefore interest in your story. This was super helpful, thanks! Keep up the good work my dude!

Very good and accurate video. I would include in good pacing some of James Bond movies and some of Bourne movies. Btw.. a comparison Bond vs Bourne would be great. An example of slow-paced movies are Eyes Wide Shut and A space Odyssey from Kubrick. Tough, these movies are high quality since they reside in maybe the most philosophical concept of genesys and an original perspective of Illuminati. I think that it takes an exceptionall skil to create a great movie using a slow pace and the best example are Kubrick, Paul Thomas Anderson and maybe Lynch. A very good end twist could also rise the quality of a movie considering a slow course of events. Can't wait for more videos!

Thanks for this interesting analysis and food for thought! I just want to add my useless 2 cents - the music really also affects the pacing just as much as visual elements. I might recommend varying the musical choice here. It was a bit grating after a few minutes of the same track!

Incredible video! Seriously underrated! I just wanted to bring up Django Unchained, since you mentioned it having good pacing. I have to disagree. I really love Quentin Tarantino, and I do always enjoy Django Unchained, but it is my least favorite film of his (haven’t seen Jackie Brown yet though). Mostly because of the pacing issues. I feel like it switches from slow paced to fast paced kind of often. It has always bothered me, and keeps me from getting really drawn in to the story (but like I said, I enjoy it and don’t dislike it by any means). What do you think of this?

Slow pacing for me actually makes a longer film feel shorter. Heat is 20 minutes longer than The Dark Knight, but it goes by way faster. TDK’s constant set pieces and fast pacing becomes exhausting

While I don't always feel the same way, I have felt that before. I like The Dark Knight's pacing, but Man of Steel comes to mind for a film that makes me feel exhausted.

In my opinion "Pacing means that audiences don't loose focus in the movie whether the movie is moving fast or slow". Eg: The Dark Knight, Red Eye, The Social Network

imo death proof is a evidence on the fact that even tarantino used bad pacing. the movie is so slow and filled with unnecessary scenes which dont benefit anything at all
@antonarap
@antonarap 9 месяцев назад
I dont think you understand what pacing is and in fact I doubt you have ever shot a narrative. You are confusing repetition of information, the length of a scene , the rhythm of editing and actual pacing, which is the selection of scene length, mostly by the screenwriter, to emphasise the importance of certain moments in the story while cutting secondary stuff short, so that they appear to be such. For very important but naturally short events (such as a person being shot for example), pacing is faked by shooting extra coverage so that the editor can make a long visual introduction to the important moment. Being a cinefile and a filmmaker are two different tings mate.
@BirdsEyeViewMedia
@BirdsEyeViewMedia 7 месяцев назад
"Pacing can be thought of as the tempo of a narrative. Narrative pacing may result in a story being called slow or fast-paced. Pacing may also be referred to as an indicator of quality, as in “that film was perfectly paced” or “that story had awful pacing.” Do you agree with this definition?
