All right I must be on the pack goat RU-vid algorithm now ha ha Ha There’s another guy I’ve been watching for a while down in Utah with his two pack goats his channel is called firebox stove, I am truly enthralled and in love with goats now. But they are like the perfect pack animal because you don’t need to bring anything with you to feed them it’s pretty amazing actually I think I will enjoy your channel thanks

On the next episode: How to properly pack and balance panniers... And pack in tarps for the goats to shelter under when it rains.
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294 3 года назад
Well, that was a passive-aggressive comment if I ever read one! Yes, rain tarps would have been a good addition. But Ii assure you all panniers were packed and balanced properly. We used a hand-scale to ensure each goat's panniers were within one pound of each other. The panniers were also packed to make sure soft items were on the inside so the goats wouldn't get poked or bruised by hard objects.
@angelgreen3532
@angelgreen3532 3 года назад
@@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294 You can literally see how off balance they are, even completely coming off a goat, at one point.
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294 3 года назад
You are referring to the incident at min. 7:18. Watch closely and you can see his pannier got flipped when he tried to pass another goat on the narrow trail. His pannier got caught on the front goat's packs, causing it to flip completely over to the other side. It wasn't a "balance" issue as youn allege. The only way to prevent something like that from happening is to secure the two panniers together under the goat's belly; something no one recommends for safety reasons.

amazing! Loved it!!! Thanks for sharing your adventure. I am a keen bushwalker and horse rider, but looking at having a play around with some alternative pack animals for something new to do. I had no idea goats could really be pack animals and follow along so nicely. How do you secure them at night?
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294 6 лет назад
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed our video. We secure our goats at night with a "high-line". If we left them loose at night they would wander off to feed and - since we live in an area we live in has a lot of predators (wolves, bears, and cougars) there's a good chance one or more of them would be snatched. Keeping them tied close to our tent at night under the watchful eye of our dogs keeps the predators at bay.

Serious question, why have so many goats with packs when you’re still gonna carry one yourself?
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294
@kenthiasoutdooradventures2294 6 лет назад
Good question. I carry a daypack that contains my 2 liter water bladder and my lunch and trail snacks, plus (usually) a jacket and/or rain jacket in case the weather suddenly turns cold. My wife carries the same, but also a lot more stuff simply because she's trying to give herself an extra workout on the trail. We are planning a thru-hike of the PCT in 2020 (mostly without goats) and are trying to fine-tune our equipment.

Was it a challenge to get the rottie to accept the goats? I like this idea a lot and we will be moving to northern ID soon. All the talk about predators makes me wonder if that was or is a concern for you out there?
@thiaanderson2962
@thiaanderson2962 5 лет назад
Actually it was harder getting the goats to accept the dogs than the other way around. At first the goats would butt the dogs anytime they got close to them. Predators are always a concern when hiking in the Idaho back country so I always carry a sidearm when hiking in case a bear or cougar gets any ideas about making a meal out of one of our goats.
@Steve-ps6qw
@Steve-ps6qw 5 лет назад
@@thiaanderson2962 yea, bears and cougars seem to be the bigger concern than wolves. I just saw another report of a cougar vicinity of Athol, Spirit Lake area (where our land is)....I retired from the army a few years ago so fire arms and hiking (humping as it is sometimes called) are not an issue for me and I am happy to know you can carry personal protection (hopefully it never has to be relied upon though). I find it funny the goats would took longer to accept the dogs! I was thinking of some Oberhasli or Alpine goats (for milk) and the wethers could be the porters.
@jessepitt
@jessepitt 5 лет назад
When I got my goats they were kids and I made sure they spent tons of time with my dogs. The dogs licked and mothered them constantly, now they are one big herd/pack. But; the goats don’t like or trust new dogs and will give’em the horns if they get too close.
@Steve-ps6qw
@Steve-ps6qw 5 лет назад
That's what I figured, our Akita has a protective streak for small things especially if they are young. The husky is not so friendly and thinks little things are chew toys....although she was trained to be "gentle" with kittens, etc. The word they used to calm her down with young animals was "gentle" and it helps. I do know if they were with kids and lambs the Akita would do well but the husky would have to be watched as she get too rough. Thanks for sharing and confirming my thoughts on introducing them young.
