Paddle board fishing (aka SUP fishing) can be one of the most effective and rewarding ways to catch fish.
It's effective because paddle boards allow anglers to have a very stealthy approach similar to kayaks, while having a much higher vantage point allowing you to see fish before they see you.
And it's rewarding because catching a fish without having to rely on high tech machinery (aka - motors) for transportation is a gratifying feat... while also providing for a fantastic full body workout.
But paddle board fishing does bring on some added difficulties for those who are not used to fishing from a SUP. And trust me, after countless fishing trips out on a paddle board, I have learned a lot from my mistakes...
So this tutorial video was put together to show 3 MUST KNOW tips that all paddle board anglers need to be aware of.
Best of all, these tips do not require any hard to find items. And they are all easy to perform.

Awesome insight! So #2 is basically a leash... but #3 was mind blowing! Planning to use that tomorrow morning on Hemlock Lake, NY. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the video -- I haven't done any ocean fishing from the paddle board yet (will be this winter near Daytona) but have been doing a lot of fishing for bass, northern pike and walleye from the paddle board on lakes up in Minnesota the past 3 summers and love it -- way better angle and visibility of the water than fishing from a kayak or canoe and is a nice complement / alternative vs. a fishing boat (which is also great reprieve for the legs after 3 or 4 hours of fishing from a paddle board). A few recommendations of my own: 1. I almost always bring an anchor unless there is no wind & none expected in the forecast -- I rarely fish in water deeper than 30 - 40 feet and I've found that having a small 10 - 20 lbs. brick or cement block for an anchor with a 50 ft rope that I place on the back of the board is not even noticeable but is super useful if you're trying to fish a specific spot that is not protected from the wind. I also take the paddle board up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area which is a huge wilderness area on the border of Canada and MN with thousands of lakes and thousands of rustic campsites maintained by the US Forest Service -- here, instead of lugging an anchor, I just bring a mesh bag and a 50 ft rope and then if I need an anchor I fill the mesh bag with rocks -- takes up no space and adds no weight if you don't need or want an anchor but with a quick paddle to shore just about anywhere there you have an anchor in 5 minutes if you want one. 2. I reel with my right hand and hold the pole in my left, so I always wear shorts or pants with a zip pocket on the right side where I always keep my stringer and a good needle nose pliers with a decent scissors feature. Having the pliers handy when landing a fish I've found to be super helpful and saves me from trying to get it out of my tackle box or a bag and I've definitely had my pliers fall out of my pocket when not wearing shorts with zip pockets which really sucks if you don't have a backup with you. I prefer using a stringer (vs. a cooler or bucket) if I'm planning to keep and cook something I catch (as opposed to catch and release) as it takes up no space on the board (unless I'm paddling a long ways between fishing spots and then I'll usually throw any fish on the back of board for a few minutes at a time so I'm not dragging them which definitely slows you down and can kill the fish if you're really paddling) and you can be out all day and still have live fish when finished (I usually tie the stringer in a loose knot around my ankle so all I have to do is reach down and grab it when I've got a fish; I fish from a couple of different boards that I keep in different locations - so for me I like to go with methods that can be done from basically any board without any modifications required). Although I always tie the end of the anchor rope directly to the board, I also will often use an ankle to tie off the anchor after I've already dropped it and don't need anywhere near 50 ft of rope (most of my fishing is 5 to 20 ft deep) - although will have to try your waist loop as tying the anchor to an ankle on windy days can really start to cut off circulation to that feet after 20 - 30 minutes, so will definitely try the waist loop as an alternative to my ankle for the anchor rope. 3. I always make sure to have some long bungies (either that are part of the board or ones that I buy separately if the board doesn't have any; or in my case the ones that came on the board have broken off) which I use to hold down by tackle box and anything else I'm bringing with me (did a 9 day wilderness camping trip last summer, so had to bring a tent and dry bags with camping supplies); although usually the most critical is locking down the beer cooler, particularly when I'm out on Lake Minnetonka on the weekend and there's tons of boat traffic :) 4. The Camelback (or generic equivalent) is super nice to have for your beverage of choice -- way better than holding a beer, soda or water in one hand and trying to cast from the paddle board with the other -- it can be done, but sipping from the camelback is definitely more convenient and you can get one that holds 3 - 4 liters so it can also be a great way to avoid bringing a cooler. It also doubles as a bag for stuff like my wallet, phone, fishing license, snacks, etc. and often will hold a small tackle box as well - I'm always trying to minimize the gear I have laying or strapped to the board without sacrificing function Thanks for publishing!

Great tips! Definetly going to incorporate the side mount rod holders. Even sitting in kayak that looks better than having my rods directly behind me.

+Wesley Bruaw Yes, this simple rope belt can be a tremendous help when paddle board fishing... stores the paddle easily and it also can be used to hold a rod for those who don't have a cooler with rod holders on it.

I’m using a sup to fish puget sound, a bit different beast here as we get strong wind and very strong current. I don’t have a fish specific sup, so I have my whole setup (vertical holders of PVC pipe) outfitted to a square milk crate. I have to fish sitting down, or on my knees. Also I wear a PFD and carry a floating marine radio

A Yakattack Rotogrip paddle holder on top of a knee high extension with a Mighty mount works awesome for paddle management on my L2Fish. Really great for sight fishing in fresh water i am sure it would be even more so in the salt! good tips yall, thank you for sharing, chris

Im thinking a paddle holster attached to the sup board , you can slip the blade into to hold it vertical or at a slight angle with in arms reach . I use my canoe for fly fishing standing up and have it rigged this way ,,,,,,but yep good video and ideas ....thanks !

We have help coming very soon, so more fishing videos will be here soon. Tight Lines!

NRS tow belt could be a good alternative to the rope on the deck. Leave the belt on and if/when you need it, just clip the end to your board. If you needed to dump your board for some reason just hit the quick release on the belt. Could also use the belt to tow someone else in an emergency. It is the pricier option for sure, but is effective and would be out of the way.

I fly fish off a paddle board a few times a year. Usually over shallow 3 -6ft weed beds where you can easily spook the Trout. I always have a hell of a time staying still when the wind is up. Thinking of taking a 3kg Dumbell or flat weight an anchor - any tips for that?

Ever consider using a sand spear to "anchor" your board while casting? I was going to get one but wondering if it adds unnecessary complexity. Also: are open toe chaco sandals safe for wading around Sarasota bay? I've done it a couple times without incident but wonder if it is risky. Thanks for all your great content! Just joined insider.

Going into deep water for mackerel and sharks and Bonita tomorrow. I don’t have the greatest sup it’s one of those Costco ones and I’m worried that if I hook a bigger spinner or hammer I might flip if I’m anchored do you think I’ll be fine?

I really enjoyed your video. Great tips for SUP fishing. Your board looks awesome but it's a little expensive. Are there any inflatable sups that you like for fishing?
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 лет назад
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment on the SUP fishing video. I have not yet tried any inflatable SUPs yet, so can't give you any first hand guidance on specific brands. But the good news is that the quality of board will not prevent fish catching... it's just that the higher quality ones make it easier and more comfortable. Here's a video that explains the pros and cons of the core types of paddle boards that I believe you'll find helful: www.saltstrong.com/articles/best-paddle-board-fishing/

Would you recommend this SUP over a Bote Rackham bug slinger?
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 лет назад
As long as it fits budget, I'd recommend the L2Fish board to anyone who will primarily be fishing because it's hull design allows for max stability with minimal water drag... allowing you to paddle further with less effort. Plus, the sides of the L2Fish are mostly vertical while still being slightly rounded which keeps it very quiet even in choppy water (very little hull slap). Best of all, it's so stable that I'm now taking the front casting platform from my boat with me so I can stand on it when fishing for extra elevation... and the board is stable even when standing up on the higher platform. Since the bug slinger appears to be at a similar price point, the L2Fish seems like the better option to me.

Thanks Brian! I just have the cooler sitting on the SUP (this board is so stable, that I've never had any issues with it falling over).
@Vera-xu3xw
@Vera-xu3xw 6 лет назад
Salt Strong so you don't troll at all I'm guessing? It wouldn't work not tied down for trolling would it? I just ordered this board....
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 6 лет назад
Correct... if trolling, then it would be extremely important to tie the cooler down securely assuming that you'd be using the rod holder on the cooler for the trolling rod. This L2Fish paddle board has mounting brackets all along the edges, so your other option would be to mount a rod holder directly to the board.
@Vera-xu3xw
@Vera-xu3xw 6 лет назад
Salt Strong is there anyway to tie that cooler down? Could you use those rod holders for trolling? Im kinda new at this.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 6 лет назад
Yes, you can get tie down accessories that fit in the slots on the sides of the L2Fish. With those, you could then tie down a cool very securely.

@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 лет назад
+Chris Finch Yes, this board can certainly be taken offshore to any type of conditions a kayak could handle... but I'd recommend tying everything down in case any waves make it over the sides. For inshore fishing, i don't bother tying down any gear (cooler, shows, etc.) and I haven't had any issues.
