Robert has said he wrote the words to this song about a girlfriend 10 years back he left to be a singer. She said the music or her. Well history says the rest. Him reflacting back on her.
Jimmy Page has a B Bender on that Telecaster. It is a device that connects to one of the strap anchor points on the guitar. You pull against the strap and it bends the B string up one pitch. Brilliant use of the B Bender in this song. Jimmy Page is just a regular guy, as are all musicians. But put a guitar in his hands and creative genius flows from his soul to the world! Such a privilege to witness the gift that he has to share!
I just read an old interview where some guy named Eddie who makes strange noises come out of his guitar said Jimmy Page played guitar like a 2 year old with a broken hand. Eddie never did figure it out...this video would have helped him understand music.
And it irritates the hell out of me when I learn a song and hear him play it with a kooler chop. brb,,, I have to go get my guitar..., back to the woodshed.
For all of the haters..and people who say Led Zeppelin was overrated and just stole their best songs..I give you Ten Years Gone..if they had not release another song this would have been epic..especially for any other band..
Well, to people who say such things: From where did they, 'rip off', or even borrow, 'Kashmir', 'Stairway', 'Good Times, Bad Times', 'Heartbreaker', 'Ramble On', 'Over the Hills and Far Away', 'Misty Mountain Hop', 'Four Sticks', 'Fool in the Rain', 'In the Evening', 'The Ocean', etc., etc. Right?
@@samr.england613People just like to hate. Imagine no Led Zeppelin music. Is that what they would rather have. All of there covers are better than the originals and everyone knows it. They're just really good at what they do. Robert kept alot of the lyrics and that didn't help. I don't give a crap.what they borrowed. It's all so damn good. Bob Dylan said Zepps In my time of dying is better than his.
@@PageCrowesIncidentally, when Dylan first heard Jimi Hendrix's version of, 'All Along the Watchtower', Dylan declared, "That's how 'Watchtower' is SUPPOSED to sound! "
I loved Zep as a kid. We just didn't know how good we had it as these albums came rolling out, back in the day. Thought it would always be like that. Nope. It was something special, still is.
so true - i remember hearing Zep so often on radio I got sick (almost) of hearing them. The reality was radio played the same hits over and over and neglected gems like this one/Ten years gone.
He's using a b-bender guitar here. He's not bending the note in the conventional sense. A mechanism connects through the guitar to the shoulder strap. Pull against that tension and the pitch goes up. Usually used in country music.
Seen then 3x. 95, 96, and 98. All at the Palace in Auburn hills Michigan. Just a 3 years out of high school, and 6 of us guys went in a conversion van and all split acid. The music sounded so good with the strings and Egyptian musicians on acid. My senses were so enhanced i was focused on every note. Porl Thompson from the Cure was with them 95 and he was phenomenal playing the guitar parts just like the album helping Jimmy out. Porl had to leave later in the tour, though. Plant thanked him. Got to see them play over the hills and far away in 96. That was a rare one for them to play 7:33 . 7:33 7:33
Glad they played this one pretty close to the original (at least by the standards of many other numbers from this collaboration). The original recording is one of the few absolutely perfect songs that exist in rock music. In my opinion, it's Zep's very best song, absolute perfection from the first note to the last, and it should not be mucked with, not by Zep themselves or anyone else. I really have no idea why - other than perhaps the sheer beauty of the composition - but this song hits me in my very soul like no other piece of music. I feel simultaneously overcome with both sadness and joy every time I hear it, and am struck dumb by the beauty of it, every single time I hear it. It's quite astounding, actually.
It's the wierd harmonies created by the dubbed guitars. Very difficult to reproduce live because there are like 6 guitars there, at least part of the time. And yes this is by far the best composition Jimmy ever made public, it's always the first track I play on that album, and what draws me to play the album again in the first place, and has been for almost 50 years now.
Love this song. Was unable to see Zeppelin, though fortunate to have seen Page and Plant in 1995 and 1998. Then Robert Plant in 2016. They will always be the best band ever!
Zepgirl 64 You are still very lucky since some of us have never seen them at all! JB passed when I wAs supposed to see them when I was 17 in 1980. Pretty sad I never did since. Trying to see Robert Plant with Amazing Grace this year but concert postponed due to Covid19. Hoping he will be able to come next year. 😕
@@lhobs9782I know, I am so grateful to have seen Page and Plant. I hope you get the chance to see Robert Plant soon. I actually won a radio contest in 1995 to see their first show in Pensacola, FL. Yes, it was so sad when Bonham passed away, I remember the day well. One great thing about YT is that we can listen to this amazing music again and again. Take care.
@@zepgirl6489- He's such an amazing singer. Wish he'd do this song in concert with his own band. His band Saving Grace has this beautiful yet melancholic way of doing songs so it'd be great to pull this one out.
Possibly my favorite Zeppelin song, way overlooked. I used to play this on acoustic as a lullaby when my kid was a baby (he's 39 now, they grow up fast!). With an achingly beautiful solo by Page, and the ingenious orchestral guitar layerings at the end. It brings a tear to my eye for a girl I once loved every time I hear it. 💔
Same.. for me it was 2003. Almost 32 now, I tell you, you don't need to have been young when they were big. Edit: Okay, so I was a bit younger than 17 when I learned to love LZ.
I was 10 in 1974 when I first heard Zeppelin, and the impact they had affects my life still today. My son is 17 and he loves them too, he has played the catalog multiple times and ranks 'Houses of the Holy' as his favorite. Their music is timeless!
All Hail . . . " The Mighty Mighty Led Zeppelin " - One of their Most Underrated Songs ( also The Wanton Song ). Led Zep Forever. Greatest of All Time.
I can't help thinking, that this two appear always very humble and simple on stage. They don't have any superstar-attitude. They don't need special effects or dancer, nothing. They simply are what they are, artists in the best sense.
MR. JIMMY PAGE PUT SO MUCH OF HIS SOUL IN THAT GUITAR AND YOU CAN SURE FEEL HIS CREATIVITY, JUST MASTERFULL. ARGUABLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF GUITAR WORK I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE TO HERE. JUST A MASTERPIECE
@@DaveH-10 Well, he joined to fill in a bass vacancy, when the vacancy was filled by a musician that primarily played bass the band kept Page on, and for a period had Page and Beck as dual guitarists.
@@DaveH-10 Page was offered the guitar vacancy in the Yardbirds before Beck, he had obligations that would not allow him to join, it was his recommendation that Beck got the gig, he would later join to fill the bass slot.
Jimmy never gave a bad performance on this masterpiece! Always a spine tingling solo accompanied by Robert's furtive wails! Greatest song ever! Actually love Jimmy's 70's version ....so emotional$
My favorite Zep song of all time. Never gets old. Pure Jimmy and Robert. Some of these Physical Graffiti songs were never incorporated into the live shows and the studio versions were mastered with multi-tracked guitars - sometimes 4 or 5 guitar parts. Jimmy is a fucking genius in how he brings the live versions the full scope of the songs with one guitar. Amazing
My favorite Led Zep song, probably my favorite song ever. The live version did not disappoint as it would be impossible to recreate the perfection of the studio version. Jimmy Page proves once again why he is the greatest guitar that has and will ever live and Robert...well Robert is Robert. There will never be another that even comes close to his magnificence. Thank you so much for posting this and making my morning sad and happy all at once.
What I always loved about Zeppelin or a Page/Plant set list is that they dig deep into the vault. It's not always about the hits. This song should have been. A hit though. Awesome tune and one of my favorites!
This song has always done it for me..the guitar is stunningly beautiful and the lyrics match the beauty. My favorite zep song and one of my favorite songs by any band.
Dana R I hate how little attention I’m gonna crawl has gotten though. No mention of it in interviews. No live performances from any member either as part of zeppelin or otherwise. It’s as if it never existed, which kinda annoys me as it’s one of my favourite songs
Thank you randy butternubs. Great way to start a menopausal morning. At least I have a reason for hot flashes after seeing Robert looking so delicious and the music sounding about as great as ever. Wish there were some shots of Michael Lee also. He was so talented and gorgeous as well. God rest his soul. Anyway thanks again. ☮
I have a love hate relationship with music from the past.It brings me so much pain because of friends and family gone now and these were favorite bands of all of them but I love to listen to it for myself.I just wish I had them back to hear it with me.Thats what I wish.
Oh yeah, This is why I'll always will enjoy this band. They made ROCK sound sooo beautiful!! However, on this video I miss that smooth bass line of JPJ and the lazy but creative back beat of JB. Still a great video.
It’s awesome to see these guys on stage so graceful as always. It sounds exactly as on the album I’m actually surprised by plants vocals. It goes to show when you got it you got it. And page the master of the telecaster!!! Crazy to think this is 96 just one year after I was born I wish I was around that time to see at least one time
this is the kind of material that caused people to accuse Led Zeppelin of having supernatural assistance to write material lol. It's too good to have written by mortals
Absolutely incredible guitar work by Jimmy. Such an emotional and touching piece of music. Soft and heavy inflections. Completely gets in my head and ruffles it all up in there. Powerful.
Awesome live version of this song! One of my all time fave Zep tunes from my fave Zep album! Page sounds great! He hacked this song to death on the 1977 tour but so glad to hear him play this so clean! Nice post!! Mahalo!!
There is something incredibly thrilling to see Jimmy Page - on two separate occasions - so caught up in the music of the moment that he has to run up to hit the pedal for the bridge. They are as transported as we are.
Life time Zeppelin fan & this has got to be one of my favorites !! Roberts lyrics are unforgettable & the band untouched to this day.... * Led Zeppelin will never die.
Its impossible to not to love this song.. my heart melt n wandered i dont know where each time i'm hearing it.my most favorite haunted song beside the rain song. Each n every single song in their album shows their own most magnificent skills at it best.something i will never find on today music..music genius that is wayy ahead of their time.thank u led zep for creating such an immortal n brilliant music which i believe i can still enjoy hearing it even when i'm getting older..
What an incredible performance. How this was such a wasted opprtunity by leaving JPJ and Jason away from this tour. They toured the world with this line up and as great as the players were could you imagine how unforgettable it would have been with JPJ & Jason. Its a shame the 07 show as a one and done
I remember when Physical Graffiti first came out. This song is almost 44 years old and still as powerful as ever. Even my 17 year old son marvels at how great this song is, as it stands the test of time... forever and ever.
Ten Years, Rain Song, Achilles…three of my all time fav songs, but they rarely if ever played them live post Zep. So this is a rare treat. Though Plant did play Rain Song once with his solo band a few years ago. I’ll take any one of those over Going to Cali, Rock n Roll or Whole Lotta Love for the 100th time. Ok, rant over.
