“What about _my_ family? _My_ friends? _My_ village?” That line cut deeper than Pain’s black rods ever could.

I love how pain never insulted naruto and his ideals. Nagato just knew that there was another perspective and pushed him to confront it.

“You strive for your justice, and I strive for mine”

Pain straight made Naruto question his whole ideology

When pain rebuttaled and said “ what about my family, my friends, my village ? They suffered the same fate as this village at the hands of the hidden leaf so how is it only fair that you can people can talk about peace and justice “. That gave me chills

I love this speech because it gives an insight of other villages. The leaf to us are the good guys. However that’s because the show is from their perspective. If we saw naruto from the rain village we would see how evil the leaf truly was during the 2nd and 3rd war. Pain lost his best friend and friends because of danzo using Hanzo. Pain knew that the only way to stop war is the eye of the moon plan.

Pains speech was really a symbolism of what it meant to live a life that's full of suffering and hate. He didn't start out like this, neither was he born to be this way. Imagine being born during a war and watching your parents die at the hands of a stranger. Pain probably didn't feel hate at that point, but more fear and sadness. Being a child and already witnessing violence and death had left a mark on him. At that point, he was motivated by that hate to survive, and the only good he ever had was his two friends and jiraiya. Around that time, the only kindness he ever received after enduring a horrible childhood, was a stranger who didn't take pity on him, but saw potential and cared to raise him. Not only were they taught by jiraiya, but they were practically raised by him for a few years. He had taught pain nin jutsu and how to survive. Maybe at that point, Nagato and his friends felt like they were healing and were feeling the only comfort and love they had ever felt in their lives. But this was short lived, as once jiraiya left, they were sad but motivated to bring about that idea of peace in the ninja world. What started as something good, fell quickly when Danzo had manipulated Hanzo into killing them off. After witnessing his friends death and seeing konan nearly die, Nagato must have lost it, and it broke him and scarred him for the rest of his life. Even Obito manipulated him for his grand plan. So here we see pain so full of hate he doesn't want to see the suffering he endured happen to any other child. He simply believes people are too bad to change, so the only way to bring peace is to make the ninja world submit and bow to their knees. It's a sad idealism, that as it may be done by evil intentions, he's doing it out of fear that it will keep happening unless he personally puts a stop to it. Listening to this speech, you can see he never was truly evil, he just lost his support system and his ideals had changed. Brilliant work by the writer Kishimoto.

When Pain says "what about my family" you immediately start shifting and squinting your eyes at the leaf for sure lol

Reminds of the line that doflamingo says “children who have never known peace have different values than children who have never known war.” Pain and naruto are people with similar and different values.

This really was the absolute peak of Naruto.

With a voice that rivals Morgan Freeman you really can't hate this dude.

“So Naruto, how would you confront this hatred in order to create peace?” This question hits different when you realize it was rhetorical.

I came here because I feel this speech speaks volumes as to what is currently happening in the world.

Pain was the peak of Shippuden. Not to say the rest of the show was bad, it’s just hard to match the brilliance of this arc

What's crazy is that this speech is even true with the real world

"This shinobi world of ours is ruled by hatred, and hatred alone." It might be a minor detail, but at the very end of the word "alone," his voice falters, just a bit - like he nearly lost his composure, reliving his trauma. Accompanied by the visual during the line, it's a really nice touch.

he was right, the only reason there is peace in boruto is because everyone is afraid of naurto and sasuke, they dont go to war because they know these guys can destroy them in seconds. Pain was right all along.

This guy really killed every character we ever cared about and sat naruto down to teach him a lesson and we all were like “ damn this dude spittin rn”

Pain was the best villain of Naruto, he was equal parts mysterious, tragic, and frightening. His mystery was unraveled slowly, without all the asspulls that Madara used. His power was incredible and we genuinely feared for the lives of the protagonists. We could sympathize with him when we learned of his story, he felt like a likable hero, that had gone far to the dark side in a believable manner.

Peace is equivocal, one man’s peace is another mans Pain. I really like how it was interpreted in this episode!!

This hammer of a speech hits the nail of the global situation right on the head.

"Oh I see" Does that give anyone chills? Like you know he already knows what Naruto is going to say; has heard it before. Than continues on with his point.

They picked a perfect voice actor for pain this suits him so good

And if one comes to call vengeance "justice" such justice will only breed further vengeance and trigger a vicious Cycle of Hatred." "Right now we live in such a cycle, I know the past and can foretell our furure, it is the same as our History." I just typed this part out so i can read this everytime I'm brought back to this.

The dialogue and English voice acting was legendary. This is why Naruto is one of the best shows ever. When Pain told Naruto about Sasuke's hatred, it really hit! The depth & reality he had in his words was moving. Came to listen what Jiraiya had to say to little Naruto too. 4.4.2023

Everything about this scene is top level. The script itself, delivery, intensity, music. Sheesh

The saddest yet best part of this was naruto couldnt answer him after the speech, all he could do was look away

Before this speech. Everyone: "Pain is evil and beyond redemption" After this Speech Everyone: "You know he may have a point here."

After hearing pain’s speech on peace for the first time I swear I felt butterflies in my stomach. When he said “what about my friends? My family. My village.” I got butterflies in my stomach because l can relate to it. I had the same experience with my country. I know how pain feels. I thought he was a bad person before but I understand him and what he’s doing. He’s a broken hero. Not a villain.

I love Pain's speech, it's 1 of the best villain speeches ever. But for me I just love his response after Naruto's outburst . "That would be justice...however. what about my family? My friends? MY village?" Before he even says anything else you already know that this man has suffered a great deal of loss and might not be entirely wrong with his actions, it's perfect.

Troy Baker took Pain from being a badass to being an absolute chad legend with his performance.

One of the things I love about Pain is that he doesn't judge Naruto for the way he feels, even his rage for Hinata. But by feeling this rage, the cycle of hatred, as he described it, would continue and prove him right

The voice actor for Pain's English dubbed is the best I've ever heard and seen! The actor really understands the character

Notice how pain was never surprised by any of narutos answers. It’s cause he was once like naruto and knows exactly how he feels. He still pursued peace but his idea of peace is twisted and he even contradicts himself even admit to that there will never be true peace but like naruto it’s still something he strives for

_“So Naruto, how would _*_YOU_*_ confront this issue in order to create peace?”_ This final line sells this speech home 100%

This was one of the first times in Naruto where a supervillain was shown to not just be a villain that wants to rule the world, but a broken protagonist who grew up in a world where might is right.

When Naruto says he wants to kill Pain, that’s when Pain realizes that Naruto is only continuing the cycle of hatred and destruction. Naruto only proved Pains point.

Pain was the best villain of any anime I've ever seen. His backstory, his powers and abilities, his agenda, the way he looks, his voice, his actions.. All of this makes him such a perfect character. Pain's arc was insanly good, and the hype back then was the real shit in Naruto Shippuden.

I always say how goated this arc was and everything leading up to it. I would’ve been perfectly fine if naruto ended after this arc. This speech is incredible and a top 10 moment to me in anime history with one of the best villains to ever be written understanding both sides of the coin.

Pains ideology made so much sense as a villain

Technically Pain was right, Naruto may have achieved peace but it was only through fear, he ended the cycle of hatred between Indra and Ashura but hatred still remains in the Shinobi world and it still dictates the actions around them.

3:17 it is this part, the climax of the speech, and the crescendo of the theme, thatis my favorite in this amazing moment

This is the most real speech I've ever heard and it's by far my favorite scene in all of Naruto and the reason Pain is my favorite villain. He's not just powerful but an innocent child turned a narcissistic mastermind with a god complex and a crushingly accurate view on the world. He isn't just fighting for his own goals like most of Naruto's villains but wants to make the world a better place in his own twisted way. Naruto always tends to have a counter to his opponent's goals and beliefs but Pain is the only villain in the series to ever leave Naruto completely speechless. He even outright says "I don't have an answer" because he knows he can't come up with a half-assed answer to something like this. Not only does it shed some light on Pain but it also develops Naruto into a better character. it also helped change my own views on life. Nobody is truly good or evil. There are only people with different struggles and outlooks on life. For a fictional character to be able to effortlessly convey the harsh reality and change a real persons beliefs deserves major props. Kishimoto is a true genius at writing memorable and relatable villains to truly grow attached to.

“What would you do to confront this hatred to create peace?” An extremely good question that real people today still do not know the answer to.

This feels very relevant even today

It would’ve made this scene twice as good if Pain said, “We are the same. I am just a step ahead in the story”
