Hi! It's Lois here, today's demo looks at working from the watercolour sketch I did in my 7 day sketching challenge, and using it as the loose road map for a more refined finished painting. I'm painting in the 'line and wash' style, with waterproof fine liners and watercolour washes. I'm not worried about keeping things perfect, but trying to suggest detail and looking for atmosphere, and light and shadow. Here's the link to the sketch video demo: • DAY 2 of My 7 DAY SK...

I'm using Saunders Waterford cold pressed paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, but use whichever size you prefer. I tell you the colours and brushes as I paint, but please feel free to use any similar or ones that you prefer.
The focus is on painting loose, concentrating on staying loose and getting atmosphere, light and shadow across the landscape, trying to capture the wildness of the Ring Of Kerry in Ireland

Wow... thankyou Lois, another great tutorial. I love your final painting. I have never tried doing a sketch first before but after watching your tutorial that's something I'm ready to try. Thanks again for sharing your talents with us.

Great work, Lois! I really like this one. Peter Sheeler would give it two thumbs way up! Fun trick: After Sargent was mostly done he would apply some gouache in areas he wanted bright colors to appear. Then after the gouache was dry he would apply more WC to tint the gouache. Some splashes of color would look wonderful in the foreground to cheer up the Paynes Gray. Great work!

Hi Lois, thank you for your wonderful suggestions. Your sketching workshop has once again made me aware of the fruitfulness of pre-practice and I practice it before any major project. I would like to comment on your beautiful image presented here that I find the line work in the foreground very convincing. I find the lines of the mountains in the background more successful in your sketchbook. Overall, I would like to point out that the way of working presented here lowers the colour a little to the level of a coulouring of a drawing. The colours no longer stand out as the essential suggestive moment, which is actually the exciting thing about watercolour painting...

Beautiful! This clearly showed me how helpful it will be, as a beginner, to sketch before attempting to paint.

I love your dramatic, moody landscapes and this one is perfection. And the music goes very well with the mood of the painting. Thank you. 😊

You’ve inspired me to try line and wash! My mountains always look like they’ve been done by a 5year old, so maybe this is a new way forward! Thank you Lois.

Lois, I really love this painting. Especially the sky, mountains and trees. Question?? Where you have the Waterproof squiggles between the trees closer to the front I can’t determine what it is or should represent. The part where the heavier black ink is. Just curious. I want to try this one. I struggle with landscapes but you make them look so easy. Great job!!! 👏🏽
