Paint Chip Repair (Dr. ColorChip Review) - GR Supra Downshift Blue 

1. You're supposed to place the drop NEXT to the chip and gently smear it across chip with a gloved finger or squeegee. Seems unorthodox, but that's the way it's supposed to be done. Then let dry 10-15 minutes or so. 2. Wipe away excess with the SealAct but hold the white cloth FLAT while wiping away excess. If you finger it like in the video, you will gouge out and wipe away the new paint in the chip. Keep it flat, and gently rub or you will have to make multiple applications to keep filling in the chip. If you do it correctly, it can be done 1st time or might take a 2nd.

I like how you can see his discerning face in the reflection as he patches the scratch.

I used the same exact method that you used and for some reason I continually pulled out the paint from the chip area. Yours turned out pretty good.

Been using the Doctor for about 10 years. It does a great job correcting chips and small deep scratches. The key is to take your time, multiple applications. From 3 ft. spots are virtually unnoticeable. Love the car.

I appreciate the video. My son got a scratch on the side of his car and i was contemplating this kit. i like that you did multiple applications to show that a deep scratch needs more work and patience.im ordering the kit today

Try watching the DrColorChip videos; you were doing it wrong. For a deep chip you need the squeegee. And you need a longer drying time. You weren't waiting long enough for the first application to dry, so when you went to apply the SealAct, you just scooped still-wet paint out when you took the top layer off. You were using your fingertips on the white towel - you need to use flat fingers and wipe gently. I'm sure if you followed the correct application procedures, you'll get a near-perfect finish. Also, with the squeegee method, you can cover dozens of fine stone chips in one pass. Not a cheap kit, but you can get great results! :-)

Just ordered a basic repair kit for my crystal white pearl WRX. It's a tri-coat paint so I've read regular touch up paint will generally look bad. I'm excited to try out this kit. I suppose the secret is in their blending solution.

Great vid! In process of getting a new daily driver, felt like I was stuck in black because it does not show the rock chips as bad (as I drive HWY and get a lot of them). I wish I had the results you have. I watched every tutorial on this thing even called them and I just couldn’t get my gray metallic Toyota paint job to work quite right. There was always a smudge if you remove the smudge you would remove the paint that you put in the chip to begin with.

i always wondered if this combination would work with wet sanding or rubbing compound after it cures.

You have to wipe the paint off with the solution with little to no pressure to prevent the paint in the scratch to be removed

Ohhh man thank you so much for the tip I’m definitely gonna order mine soon for my 2020 Mazda 3 soul red metallic, it really sucks these stone chips 😫😤 what I might do after is getting a protective film coat or ceramic coating to protect my paint for a couple of years...

Thanks for posting this I have a 2017 STI and have full hood front fenders and lower rocker panels all PPF. My doors did not get PPF I have a few small chips I will try this

I didn’t buy a brand new car so that’s my reasoning to why i didn’t get protection on my car but my bumper has many rock chips and powder comes off when i drive in the highway & makes my bumper look ugly, so definitely trying this for now since i plan on replacing it anyways.

Buy touch up paint, clean area with alcohol, use paint thinner and dab chip for paint adhesion, dab paint on chip and let dry for awhile, wet sand with 2500 then 3000. Compound, polish and wax.

It didn't work for me, luckily there are only three chips so far 😀... As you can see in the video, the product puts protection in the hole to prevents humidity that eventually create Rust. But it is not level with the paint. Even that I spend 4 hours doing it.. In other words, it is not a filler, just a protector... The factory Touch Up gave me better results...Thanks

I know this is three years old at this point, but why was there no clear coat involved in the process? Does the paint not require it?

How long did you wait inbetween applications? I did coat 1 and then used more paint but still trying to level it as best I can

For a car like that I would def wrap it with something like xpel ppf

Looks like you are supposed to put the paint next to the chip and smear it in. That stops you pulling the paint out.

Do they make a clear coat? So you can re-color, and then fill hole with clear, so that it matches the car.

Good job. You should have placed paint NEXT to the chip and squeegee it into the chip. It is very easy. Do not worry....the Sealact will remove the excess paint off. I actually took the paint and smeared it all over the hood, a trunk lid, and the roof of my old corolla, it covered about 500 chips.

Off topic CarGuy, but are you aware of how to adjust the Supra headlights. May be a good video for you to film as no internet information is out there (including U-tube). I think I see under the hood above the lights two ports that are circled with arrows. One for up and down and one for left and right. That be them ?

Do you have pearl in ur paint? If so, I would recomcond you get touchupdirect. Their kit come with 3 layers. Base color, mid coat(pearl) and clear coat. Just polish each coat and it work wonders.

If you read and watch the videos from them, they say direct dabbing in the chip is what not to do. I've never used it but I would likely try the reccomended directions first. Still a helpful real world experience

hi, how long do we need to wait for the paint to dry. I tried this one and wait for the paint to dry, i touch the paint and it is not going to my gloves anymore. I applied the sealact but it also removes the paint in my chip.

Great timing! I just noticed a scratch on the hood of my downshift blue Supra. Would you recommend this kit for scratches too or is there a better way of dealing with them?

If you put the sealact rag around a piece of wood or something flat, it will even the paint to the rest of the car, instead or digging it back out.

Great video, I am getting a clear bra on the front of my new car but I am sure I may need this in the future for the areas that aren't protected.

You’re supposed to put your paint drop outside the hole and then drag the paint over the hole when you put the paint in the hole and drag it you’re just pulling paint out of your chip hole

The same thing happened to me with my 2020 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road Edition :-( I was driving it home from the dealership and they were doing road construction on like 40% of the road back to my house and there was only 1 lane going in each direction so I couldnt leave the construction area, I dont know if it was a vehicle going in the opposite direction that kicked up a rock and it hit my tailgate or if it was my truck that kicked up the rock and it hit my tailgate but it hit the top of my tailgate and chipped off the paint leaving a white mark where the paint was :-( luckily I dont think that it dented it but it did chip off the paint where it hit. I am going to see how much it costs for a Toyota dealership to repair it professionally though because I want to get the truck wrapped in paint protection film to prevent future paint chips afterwards. Hopefully the Toyota dealership doesnt charge too much to fix it and they can get rid of the indent in the paint.

does anyone know if after it "cures" can you polish and wax your car like normal?

Fffffffuck. I guess the stuff isn't magic. I have a 2020 widebody challenger. There's a chip twice this size on the inside of the passenger door.its where the door meets the body but it's big enough you can see it when the door is closed. That kind of odd spot my guess is my wife's purse or gym bag or something got it.. never used touch up paint before. I have a feeling I won't be happy after watching this video. I guess I'll try putting on layer after layer. 6 or so if need be to level it out. Oh well. No other options I guess. Thanks for the video!

I’ve never seen one these videos where the divot actually gets filled in, regardless of the number of attempts or technique. Everyone gives up and says it’s good enough from a few feet away.

Fill it and wet sanding and it looks like repainted, with this you still see the hit…

You probably could have done it quicker and better if you didn’t use your fingers on the cloth to rub the excess… I would have use that cloth on a foam ceramic coating foam block to act as a leveler… the cross cross pattern works block, would prevent the low spot action you get from a finger rub wit a towel.

you are doing it wrong - put a blob beside the chip and squeegee it over. That is how they do it in the Dr. Colorchip video.

From what I have seen on RU-vid howto videos, you did it wrong.

Dude is not even following the basic instructions... You never fill the paint chip directly...you're supposed to drop the paint NEXT to the chip and they smear it over. This prevents creating the crater that you are seeing... Smh

So you did exactly how it’s NOT suppose to be done and that’s why the results were crappy. However, if this was a video of what NOT to do, well then you succeed.
