Are you using just one brush?? How are you keeping the colors from becoming muddy? Are you a magical creature of immense talent?
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
Yep, one brush, cleaned with dirty walnut oil between colors. Mud is okay. I try to control what I want to blend by loading or starving my brush. A loaded brush blends less because of the mass of paint being applied. A starved or naked brush does lots of blending. No magic, just years and years of practice. :)

Do you have an alternative to walnut oil? I have a nut allergy, can't really touch it or anything.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
Most people use solvents like turpentine to rinse brushes in, but I'm sensitive to fumes. Linseed oil might be an option. It may eventually gum up, though.

I love the colors and your loose and rough style is very aesthetic. As a person that gets easily bored with cleaning up one painting or drawing I really appreciate how you are able to put together a painting that naturally and lively. To me, this kind of first generation/one session paintings tend to have so much character.

Since discovering your channel only recently, I've developed something of a ritual around it. First, I watch the video. Then, I watch it a second time at quarter or half speed [obviously, with the sound off!] to get a better understanding of how the paint is being applied. Finally, I go back and do a few dozen screen-grabs that capture the process unfolding, step by step. This sort of analysis really helps develop an understanding of how another artist approaches their work, which is incredibly instructive. I'm so impressed with the way you tackle various portions of the image - seemingly almost at random - all at once, rather than in the much more linear manner I've been used to - that is to say, working on one item at a time - rough in the shape, draw the eyes, draw the nose, now the mouth, ears, hair, etc. You treat the the completed form as a whole to be developed simultaneously. I find that very liberating, and wanted to thank you for your beautiful work, as well as providing that insight.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 5 лет назад
I really appreciate your resolve to educate yourself. So many new artists I come across need to be spoon-fed, and as much as I'd like to help everyone, I literally don't have time for it. I find that moving around the piece and doing as much as I can simultaneously creates better value and color harmony. It's all about relations. One thing influences another, and the more I move around the stronger the relations are.
@atlanteum
@atlanteum 5 лет назад
John, thank you for your response. I really like what you say about on-the-fly, global evaluation and adjustment as you work. I am by nature and experience a pen and ink line artist. Color is something that I have simply have no natural instinct for. When I see your work, and watch you apply what is, for me, such a non-intuitive range of hues, it forces me to stop and think - there is no "wrong" or "right" color, there is only what you make of any given palette. That was the epiphany I mentioned earlier, the moment of liberation. If there is no "wrong", you can't fail; if you can't fail, there's nothing to fear. Well, I'm sure that, given enough time, plenty of "fearless experiments" will be looked back upon as failures! But that's fine, as the most important part is to just get moving down the path in the first place. I suspect the colors you apply are not so random in their selection, as you have travelled this path many times and have certain goals in mind from the moment you start, even if it evolves along the way. Anyway, thank you again for the insights and for inspiring a healthy dose of artistic courage within your audience!

If you look at the beginning, you'll see the artist laying out tones/hues. Try painting something just in whites/grays, then use what ever colors you want over each of the hues. Stick to the hues and forget about color for awhile

You definitely got a style that identifies you as an artist, on one hand your palette seems simple, however you get the best out of it; on the other, you demonstrate mastery by using one brush size without limiting your assorted brushstroke gauge, since you can go amazingly from thin to thick at ease. Congratulations!
