"Contrition" was painted over about 1.5 hours. I lost a little bit of video in the middle when my camera turned itself off. This painting measures 7 x 7 inches and was painted in oils on a hardboard panel.

Love this piece of work. A fabulous style and a real pleasure to watch the way in which the painting develops. One question that I hope you may answer: do you prime the hardboard with anything prior to starting work? It looks like the paint flows freely over the board rather than being absorbed by it. Hope you may answer. Love your uploads, really great work...

@jacquelinemorgan7189
@jacquelinemorgan7189 7 лет назад
I love how you paint, who were your influences? I feel like a little of Rembrandt in the post-impressionists. Do you mix your own black or do you use black right out of the tube? Your paintings are a lot smaller than I would expect them to be too.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
I have too many influences to name, but yes, many impressionists, expressionists, illustrators, and pre-raphaelites. I usually mix my own black(the pigments vary), if only because the ivory black I've used NEVER dries.
@jacquelinemorgan7189
@jacquelinemorgan7189 7 лет назад
Nice! and yeahhhh i feel you. I like to mix a deep green for my black. oils take so long to dry on there own. Its nice though!

What style of painting would be this? Awesome work friend.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
Contemporary realism is an easy blanket, though I don't consider myself much of a realist. "Alla prima" is the painting method sometimes associated with this style. Thanks.
@JemacMauricio
@JemacMauricio 6 лет назад
Thank you very much for your prompt answer. So, when it's painted with only the most important traits (without the thorough detail in classic painting) is considered Contemporary?
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
No. Contemporary means it's happening now. What you're describing is more in line with impressionism, which I lean towards.

I really want to get into painting but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions?
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
I, like a lot of artists, started with watercolors, then moved to acrylics, and now oils. There is no reason you can't start with any medium you want to try, though. If you paint light to dark, watercolors might be for you. Dark to light is well suited for oils. You just have to try to see what you like.

Is that ftalo green o emerald green? do you use blue in any steps of the painting? and what kind o red do you use? sorry but im obssed with this colours
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
It's a toned down phthalo green, I think. The red I'm using is napthol red. It neutralizes nicely with the phthalo green. I don't think there is any blue in this painting. It looks like just titanium white, indian yellow, napthol red, and phthalo green.
@deengew
@deengew 7 лет назад
I know you get bombarded with questions. But I notice you use a the same brush in the beginning for a lot of the painting. What brand is that? Is that a flat or a bright? Synthetic or what?
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
No problem! I'm not sure of the brand, but it's just a cheap flat that came in a set. It's a soft synthetic, about 1/2 inch wide. I don't invest a lot in brushes, so I don't feel too bad when I wreck one.
@deengew
@deengew 7 лет назад
So you can still make great art and not spend a lot of money! Cool! Thanks!

One last question do you mix the gel before hand or just take it when needed?
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
I don't mix it into the colors from the tube because it can speed up drying on the palette, and I want those pure colors to stay wet until I need them. I do mix it into whatever colors I'm mixing for a current painting, and also as needed.
@eddiewinchester3272
@eddiewinchester3272 7 лет назад
how much do you mix the paint? i always manage to run out before i get the stroke to finish. i use up so much paint for some reason. idk why should i mix more turpentine or am i doing something wrong??
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
I don't mix it much, just enough to get a somewhat even color. I like to add gel medium to extend the paint and make it a little easier to work with. I keep away from turps, but I'll mix in some walnut oil if I want it loose for sketching.
@sharonahrens795
@sharonahrens795 6 лет назад
I would like to see a slower tutorialwhich also tells us wht colors you mix for flesh.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
I've got some slower videos on Patreon, but I'm afraid I don't have a formula for flesh. Most of the colors on my palette make it into my flesh colors somewhere. Light color, different local colors of flesh, and the color scheme of my palette change from painting to painting.

Do you use the impasto technique, how do you get you paint so thick
@taylorhappy3716
@taylorhappy3716 7 лет назад
Because i love that style
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
I used to struggle with getting the paint thick. It comes down to pre-mixing a lot of paint on the palette, loading the brush with lots of paint, and leaving what you put down alone. Sounds simple, but it can be a hard habit to get used to, especially if you're miserly with the paint like I was.
@taylorhappy3716
@taylorhappy3716 7 лет назад
Okay thank you im not use to using oils, i took a digital design class for three years most my work was done digitally. But I really like oils and em really getting more into it and I enjoy your style and thank you for the tips do you use lin seed oil or no
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 7 лет назад
I sometimes use walnut oil to thin the paint for the sketch in. Otherwise, I use solvent-free gel to extend the paint.

Your palette takes about 1/3 of the frame, the painting no ore than 1/6 and the rest is a blank space and part of your head. Pitty.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
Did you miss the part where I lost 15min of video? Not exactly a production studio setup, admittedly. I mean, Bob Ross had 3 or 4 cameras to capture everything.
@TheEwaryst
@TheEwaryst 6 лет назад
LarrivaArt I like your paintings very much, but you present them tiny during your painting process. The canvas/panel occupies only 1/6th of the whole frame. What I mean your videos would benefit from zooming into the painting surface.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
I know exactly what you meant. People have requested to see my palette while I paint, so I made the video this way. If I had multiple cameras and camera operators, I could cut to a zoom, palette, or whatever. Unfortunately, it's just me. You should check out my more recent videos.
