I learned how to digital paint last year and got pretty decent pretty fast. Instead of following digital painters, I subscribed to traditional painters on YT . I am still learning but the thing is, the words you said is similar to the philosophy I have when approaching almost anything I learn. The last thing I did was a self portrait. I think it came out decent but you can tell the flaws. Since I learned so fast how to digital paint, I didn't bother learning the fundamentals. Now as I go back to them, my skills are jumping for each one I learn and implement! Also, when I digital paint I try to keep it as close to traditional art as possible for now before using all the tools that digital art has. No Undo, No color pick, no reshape tool, no layers. Just painting until i feel like it's done.

Where were you my whole life! Awesome videos, I love your style and the “down to earth” commentaries :-). I also love how you sometimes “break the rules” and experiment, such as start with the light parts first in some videos, or paint on unprepared surfaces (like here) etc… just awesome… thank you!

John, you're as good as any artist on youtube, even Chelsea Lang, who I think is brilliant. And as I mentioned once, I really think those you do using just Indian Y, Napthol and Thalo are often your best, which is why I started using them also. My $10 a month Patreon is well spent. Keep it up man!

This is probably the most valuable video on value and color temperature i have seen. Thank you. It is great because you are not talking about them, but just doing it and telling us what you had in mind. I think that clicked something in me, hope so! To me, I like a lot that type of video, with you talking (your voice is normal to us lol). Timelaps are nice, but with some commentaries is way more valuable in my opinion. Thank you

I so appreciate you doing this. I purchased a small painting a couple of years ago to learn from you. At the time I asked if you did workshops. You did not, so this is not only very fulfilling but it is so well done. I learned more about your methods and the ending about Rubik's was much more that I have ever received taking a workshop from other artists. I hope you do more. They are of great value to me.

@LarrivaArt

Confidence is honestly a constant struggle for me. My internal dialogue goes like this, "What if it comes out bad?" "It doesn't matter if it comes out bad." "But then it will have been a waste of time and paint." "No it won't because you will have been painting." and on and on. The argument doesn't end until I take the tiny steps towards working: laying out a palette, printing a photo reference, starting a loose sketch. Then I don't have to argue anymore because the painting is happening.

Brilliant video! I saw the thumb earlier and thought it was going to be another motivating speed paint vid, ended up being much more. Thanks for your insight into your process and mindset about your work. About painting on Aluminum, I worked in automotive paint store and we always recommended between 400 and 600 grit for bare metal, but that was to spray an etch primmer and then a fill primer and so on for body repair. I am sure you already know this but the other thing I recommend which kinda breaks flow is to let the first layer tack up a bit before moving ahead to prevent lifting.

I have used acrylic for a long time and have always wanted to transition to oil buh just never knew where to start you've always been my favorite painter and helped me alot with my acrylic so hoping to learn how to oil paint from your videos as well 🙂 my only questions so far is did you have to wait for the painting to dry to continue layering? Or did you use a specific solvent?

I usually paint of shellacked hardboard and I actually don't clean my brushes. I use cheapo student brushes and just leave them submerged in the walnut oil when I'm not using them. Soap and water work well enough to clean them, if you need to.
