Painting a Portrait Using Secondary Colors(Time-lapse)

How do. I'm trying to paint a portrait using only secondary colors - you know - orange, purple, and green(and white). I like how it came out, though I was very tempted to sneak some other colors in. You can see a full-length, narrated version over at Patreon, or slow the video to .25x and imagine what I'm saying.
The medium I'm using is solvent-free gel: amzn.to/2PAwkce

Painting has that same quality as cooking where it looks like a dumpster fire until it comes together and suddenly your amazed.

Thanks for the reminder of this method of painting from a black and white photo and getting the shapes and tones from the photo, but making the colors from imagination. It's a really interesting way to paint.
@luna-kiva
@luna-kiva 5 лет назад
Robert one can use any colors for this exercise but it’s good to remember that warm colors will bring the form forward while cool colors will push the form away. Or warm color for light Areas and cool tones for shadow.
@RobertF-

@@luna-kiva That's a good point. Out of all the colors in general it seems like yellow looks the lightest, and blue and purple looks the darkest.

When you're a painter, a drawer, you constantly squint your eyes while working.... you get a more global view of your image, of what is going on. Try it sometimes while looking at such vid', and you'll see clearly and earlier the portrait appearing. ; )

Do u ever spend like an hour on a painting and you're still only halfway through and you look at the reference and back at your work like wtf how is this ever going to work? And then you figure you might as well keep going, worst case scenario you make it even worse but it doesnt matter it's just paint on a canvas. And several hours of your precious time. But at least you got practice. ***Not to say this is bad this is obviously very very good! Just halfway through working everyone's paintings always look really messed up lol that's when I start getting scared that it won't work out.

Probably the best portrait demonstration on ''RU-vid'. A great example of starting off right! i.e. 1/. Subject on left (for a right handed artist), 2/. Working from outside in and having your paints on the right. All makes for a perfect demonstration from a great artist. Thank you.

@danielmcgowan4970 5 лет назад
@@snufkinsfanboy5649 Hi Max, Do not rest your arm on or near the page, step or sit back if you want to rest or relax. The hand and arm must be free in order for you to interpret your natural movement and style. Think about it! Good luck.

I have long been a huge fan of the green/purple/orange concept (yellow/blue/red have too powerful a lobby) and I work them into my portraits whenever I can. My favourite secondary grouping comes from Old Holland's exquisite range of oils. Sap Green Lake Extra teamed up with Ultramarine Violet and Scheveningen Orange works a delight. I also like the muted offbeat green/yellow/blue/red foursome of: Oxide of Chromium/Naples Yellow/Indigo/Indian Red which, as a combination, is quite unusual but those shades have a empathetic synchronicity that works very well.

i think this is really cool. i was worried about the greyness of the skin until you added the orange reflective light and wow that really made it take form. i so wish, however, that some of the shadows were cooler instead of being so warm. like the shadows in the right side of the face next to the hair. i feel like those shadows would benefit being cooler and less orange. still a very interesting piece and definitely something that i’d like to try :)

All I could think was how infuriatingly careful you'd have to be to paint with such a big brush on such a small canvas. Such a bold choice. I think if I ever get oils I'd have to paint more impressionistically, like this, bc damn I can't stand waiting for things to dry 🤣

Bravo!! I will admit, when you grabbed the orange, i tightened up. Anybody els feel that? I would have never thought to go in that direction, with the greyish green earth tones. But nicely done sir👌👏🔥🔥. Once the orange was in play, I was committed to watch where this goes. I had to stay and watch til the end. Its impressive to watch the process come to life in front of my eyes. 👏 I might explore this technique myself. It definitely doesn't look "easy", but I might surprise myself. The take away from this video is be bold with colors.

Poweful colors choice.. the secret was how you got the mid grey's tonalities concentrating on getting clean mixtures out of complementaries. It was even enough with orange and dark green. This was a very great video and great color comprehension. I believe that u did not use pure colors.. u always put a minimum touch of the complementary even in the highlight. Why do you prefer the wood panels rather than the canvas?
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 5 лет назад
Thank you. I prefer hardboard because of its smoothness. At this small scale, the canvas texture is very distracting and can buffer detail. If I worked larger, it wouldn't be as much of an issue.
