The grayscale method has been a life saver for me because I struggle with color matching and finding the right shades. But since I color everything in gray, then use gradient maps and the adjustment settings after, my shading is much more accurate and realistic because I can focus on values instead of colors.
I'm such a fool for color. I don't know why, but without color picking I somehow never hit the right one. They're always off. I think I'll try out the painting over grayscale method. This way I only have to choose some colors and the program does the rest. I guess it get's problematic in scenarios with exaggerated lighting and contrast, because you have basically no real hue shift, but I'm far from that anyway.
I think I'll learn this whole grayscale thing again. My art LACKS of contrast and I want to leave semirealism so hard, but no matter what...it all looks flat. And the colors look off too. I can counter some of it by adjusting the colors on my smartphone the way I see them on my graphics tablet...but I feel like I can do better.
@@allex_jr8034 oh i meant after applying the gradient map, when i apply color on a new layer the shading doesn't turn out how i want it to. Sorry I'm really new to digital art 😅
I do the grayscale a bit different, i copy the image so that i have a backup, then with the lasso tool, I select the parts I want colored then i use a gradiant map to layout the different colours (Check out Marc Brunet, he explained it much more precicely than I did)
Doing grayscale, personally, helps in using value first. I did color only at first, but the colors end up looking too jarring since I don't have value references/underpainting. Plus, it greatly helps me in painting skin since there's a technique for this method: grisaille.
Thank you for taking us through this process in real time. You usually see all these adjustments and gyrations done in 10x time lapse mode, leaving far more questions than answers. You have done a public service here.
The main problem with this method is you have to understand value first bcs if you don't, your grayscale image would be terrible when you put colors on it 😂
I find starting with grayscale gives more control, especially if you're not good with choosing colors. Starting with grayscale first is a hack for making sure your color values are correct because if your values look right in grayscale, your colors are guaranteed to have the right values when you apply them. Along with flipping periodically, if I start with color, I periodically turn the piece to grayscale to make sure the values read correctly. Honestly, it's best to keep an open mind, because one way isn't better than the other all the time. Sometimes if I start a piece in color, then turn it to grayscale when it's almost done, applying colors with the filters gives me a better result.
This is how my husband has always painted, I guess its how he we taught at school, he keeps telling me I should do it this way too. Though,, after watching so many videos where people just paint in color, it's been very hard not to just go straight for color lmao
When I saw this drawing on your Instagram yesterday I was so shocked because this drawing is just so beautiful (in a different way than usual) I was really looking at it for a couple minutes and then saw that you first started out with grayscale. And it was kind of visible that something was different about this drawing than usual. As you said, it does have deeper colors and it also shows that you took more time to work on this piece, so I hope you don’t think that you have wasted your time on this one. 😄 As someone who usually takes at least 10 hours to complete a simple portrait and most of the time struggling to find the right colors, I think this method will speed up my workflow personally and I’m excited to try this out myself. So thank you very much for this amazing video it was her helpful and it would be awesome to see you try out some other methods too. 😄☺️
Because I was really bad at value, I start to draw from grey first. It's actually help me alot, and now as freelancer I use the method especially drawing for game background/environments.
Do you ONLY draw women? I went by your IG and I don't remember seeing male paintings. You are great artist but it seems you only draw the same thing, same faces, just different hairstyle, clothing and skin tone. Would love to see your take on male anatomy and maybe even animals or creatures.
I've tried but ran into the same issue you did with the colors being very muted. And I went about correcting it the wrong way and I gave up on it lol. BTW thank you for inspiring me!
There is a way to do it quite easier and much faster, saw this method in Coax's videos (he's an south korean artist). You just select the needed part of the painting (skin for example), then you copy it on another layer (just for safety) and change colors with ctrl+b, ctrl+m, ctrl+u tools (can't remember all of their names, sry). It is actually really fast and looks good, and of course you can add some few more layers in different modes like multiply etc, but it's not really needed. Basically you can do it all with ctrl+b (in photoshop). Hope It will help someone who thinks that turning greyscale into color is hard. However I advice just check Coax's video about "Glazing" technique. However, amazing video!
@@roooster7681 I agree, that's why I usually turn b/w into color not on the final stage but like halfway through or so. It's like making sure that you got your values right and then working on. I believe in the beginning of this video, Sam was watching Dave's Greco tutorial and he mostly does the same thing, just a little differently.
I'll be honest.. sometimes I just like playing you in the background, even if I'm doing something else. There's something about your voice: it's so soothing! XD
haha whats funny is i saw this videos thumbnail on my phone while scrolling...my phone is greyscale so i assume the second picture is color? just looked greyscale to me aswell
When I started painting I actually loved using grey scale (in csp it is taking less time) because I wanted to understand light and shadow before focus on color. So it`s pretty useful I think! :)
Looks good! I used to exclusively paint in this method before switching to full color painting. I agree with your thoughts, and also find that it takes more time than just straight painting with color
The result is sooo pretty, wow! 😍😍😍😍 it makes a huge difference! And i think the greyscale method is best utilised when you start to add colour before you finish, like half and half ❤❤❤
I've always really enjoyed the grayscale to color method because I have chronic migraines, and having the blue light filter on during most of the process is a lifesaver to me. Anyone who has tried to do a color painting and then turned blue light off knows exactly what I mean lmao.
I truly dislike painting in greyscale and then colouring, I'd much rather paint in greyscale to get clear values for the picture and then just paint again in colour - it's just more natural and several times faster than colouring for me :D Also when I test colour variants I just copy, paste and put different colours in a new layer in "colour mode" then I do some adjustments and it takes minutes to do it :) Anyway, amazing video like always
Hi Sam! It's my first time using Photoshop and I barley know the controls! I tried messing up the controls but it made it worse sadly, but it's fine, it restarted, i hope one day youll make a video about Photoshop for beginners, looking forward for seeing it!
i work exclusively in this method. The only difference is that I used a series of gradient maps for the coloring. The skin usually gets three stacked maps (skin tones, below the skin blood and purples).
Thanks for the forecast! I have a quick question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (air carpet target dish off jeans toilet sweet piano spoil fruit essay). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
This video was really helpful! I've never tried Grayscale to colour before for the very same reason - I like to have control over the colours I use. That's why, I usually do my Grayscale portraits & Coloured portraits separately for different pieces
Brooo you just spent 40?? I waste days trying to figure out color on only one piece, I love my black and white painting but colored are just a nightmare, definitely gonna try this method :D
Great video! It's a beautiful result in the end, but that black and white drawing though 😍. This one didn't need any coloring at all. Loved the Ross reference 😄
I really like your style but one thing I've been noticing is that almost all jeg paintings has the same face. Like it fells like you're drawing the same person every time. At least to me. And it's not hate. I would love to see other hairstyles, different faces and yeah in general more variation in the characters 😊
I personally only use this method when I don't know what colors I want yet, but know how I want the composition to look. Once I get a light layer of color placed in, I'll then merge and continue painting. So I tend to apply this really early in my paintings, if at all. Most helpful for landscapes.
Sam, you used grayscale totally wrong, you need to use gradient tool, you are even on a photoshop, so you already have the tool, and the work process of coloring would be less painful,,, oh my,,, why u had to draw with blendingmodes, this makes me sad ;;; (tho ic you had fun, but that was most slowest process) Gradient tool would change your grayscale to colors you actually choose, they wouldn't try to mix with the gray color but they actually would work as color u've chosen. I hope you will see this comment, because I hoped to see you using in this video gradient tool ;; instead of trying to put colors in ;;
So what exactly is the wisdom behind using grayscale to color? Is it to kind of map out whether you should use a darker value or lighter value, basically?
Thank you thank you thank you for this. Im always afraid to color because it took me so much time and ended up hating my work and burn out from it. Imma try this 😊
lmao yea bruv, looking washed up the first moment you add the colors es normal xD...You work your ass off to do something that looks like shit when you start the greyscale, then looks good, then it looks like shit again once you add color again, by the end should look great tho ;)
I've tried to do grayscale to color and quite honestly I just.. ended up really disliking it. I enjoy laying flat color down and then going in with shadow and light, rendering it that way.
