It intrigues me how basic techniques with old brushes build up realism from the get go - even with headland and foliage. Forget about expensive tools and paints, use what you have because it is good enough!
The older and more frayed the brushes are for foliage the better, round and flat work beautifully. Forget fancy pigments too. Mixing with basics - cad yellow, burnt umber, forest or hookers green and white go far. For added zing purple tones can be added or make sienna tones with red, yellow and ultra marine blue are a real treat. Mixing you own tonal values is a bonus as you learn more a bout tones and how they interacts with each other . They can applied thickly with a wet brush, dry brushed on, applied in thin or thick glazes until you achieve the desired look you are after.
I'm into creating realism and think that's achieved better when being flexible with paint application. I never go solely from background to foreground and that' it. Building realism starts when you detail as you go - applying and maneuvering between highlights and shadows while structuring the foliage and headland area, not merely blocking in, in flat colours then detailing afterwards. Start thinking ahead as you go, create dimension as you go and have fun with it.
Painting ability increases markedly with experimenting with your paints to get to know and understand their maximum capabilities. This not only empowers you with knowledge , you'll find you'll become more relaxed as you see improvements on the canvas and in self confidence to extend techniques and challenge yourself further.
