Time-saving DIY hacks for painting kitchen cabinets.
When I decided to get my kitchen cabinets painted, I got 3 estimates from professional painters, and the estimates ranged from $2,400 to $4,300. Anyway, given the fact that there were not that many cabinets, I decided paint the cabinets myself. In this video, I’m going share with you the short cuts I took that still resulted in a durable paint job (with absolutely no sign of any peeling or chipping or wearing down even after a year). Considering that this is one of the biggest bang for buck DIY projects, I would definitely paint cabinets DIY, but there are some things I would definitely do differently.
Steps for painting kitchen cabinet:
1. Buy 2 quarts of primer and 2 quarts of paint (buy gallon can if price is better).
2. Take off all knobs and pulls.
3. Protect the countertops with plastic sheets (from the dollar tree).
4. Add a bottle of TSP solution to a gallon of water. Use a spray bottle to spray all the cabinet surfaces with tsp solution first (empty out glass cleaner spray bottle, then return the glass cleaner after use).
5. Wipe down all the cabinet surfaces with dry rags.
6. Repeat steps 3 & 4.
7. Buy and put on a nice organic vapor mask (e.g., 3M 7162 full-facepiece spray paint respirator - organic vapor)
8. Use a 2 inch brush to apply a VERY thin coat of primer to narrow, uneven surfaces and a foam roller to apply a VERY thin coat of primer to large, flat surfaces. Make sure that all excess primer is pressed/squeezed out of the brush and roller before using on cabinet surfaces. Repeat to apply a second coat.

I always appreciate your “trial and error” transparency. It is extremely helpful to see and know what not to do as it is important to know how to do it 😊
