Recently retired and wanting to get back to building, especially in the winter. Playing catch up with the all changes in materials and model cost. Fortunately I stashed my old kits many years ago and can practice on those. Plus I do need a new airbrush. Subscribed and watching your great tips. The only masking tape when I was building was architecture drafting tape and Monogram was King :-)

@@StyreneModelersHaven Thank you , I'm anxious to see if I can get back up on the horse 🤠. I did remember a question I wanted to ask. I retired in Pacific Northwest and there is not a single true hobby shop for models and supplies in town. Can you recommend an online store that is good to deal with. My primary problem is supplies especially paints. Thanks, standing by for next video.

Brother, I wish you were around when I was doing my first HK 1/32 B-17G. Your videos have been spot on with addressing the pitfalls of this type of model. There are tons of vids about painting, masking and weathering on "painted" models but woefully lacking in the NMF stuff or the combination models like what you display. I love aircraft, NMF and weathering them. Unfortunately, I can build and paint well but weathering the NMF to look period correct is not my forte. More vids from everyone on weathering a NMF to look period correct, especially realistic exhaust streaks/stains and oxidization/dulling of the metallic surface. I feel like there's a dot mapping technique for NMF but search results yield nothing that I can use it seems. Great job. You're hitting all the real issues of technical finishing of a model.

Wow! I am truly humbled by your comment, thank you. I am an old school modeler and learned lots of tips and tricks before all the newer products came out so I like finding simple yet effective ways to build models without having to spend a lot of money.

Good stuff and I have been doing this the same way pretty much for a while. One thing to take note of with stripes/bands on WW2 aircraft especially. They were applied in the field and often with a deadline. If you look closely there is a lot of irregularities in the markings since they were quickly masked and often painted with brushes. Don't fret too much about stripes being perfect - they weren't !

I have a question this is a great technique for solid color bands but how do you mask off the pinstriping around the band? Many early 1930s aircraft that incorporated Bands and Chevrons on the upper wing for squadron identification have a solid color band and then to highlight that band and make it more visible they feature a thin black or white pinstriping around the outer edge of the color band your video doesn't address this as the band's that you painted were just solid color with no pinstriping, is that the same technique do you have to use thinner masking tape can you even paint a band that is 1/2 mm wide? I'm building a 1/32 scale William Brothers Curtis Hawk kit and I have this exact scenario in 1/32 the black pinstriping around my Chevrons and bands are about half a millimeter wide is it even possible to correctly tape off half a millimeter and then airbrush the black pinstriping or is there a pinstriping decal product made that I'm not aware of?
@StyreneModelersHaven
@StyreneModelersHaven 10 месяцев назад
Applying a thin decal may be the way to go. You could get white decal paper, spray it black, clear coat it with gloss lacquer thinner and then cut thin strips to apply.
