For Beginners, painting small can take away the pressure and the fear to try new ideas, experiment and be bold with your choices. Let's play our way through watercolor. In this video we'll be exploring landscape with Cobalt Teal as the color for the sky. Cobalt Teal by QOR but you can also find it in other popular brands like Daniel Smith, M. Graham and Windsor and Newton (Cobalt Turquoise).

Great video. Especially good for experimenting with color combinations (warm and cool). BTW the reason the first one looks "flat" is because the lower green portion is all one dark value. If you lighten the top of the green area it will suggest things far away. This is atmospheric perspective and is a key to depth in landscapes and is very easy to learn. Teachers will sometimes tell students that dark colors seem near and light colors recede but don't explain why. The reason that things that are far away seem lighter is that we are viewing them through a lot more atmosphere which contains dust and water vapor and tends to obscure and lighten objects that are far away.

Great exercise. Easier to show improvement and simply playful approach to watercolor. As a beginner I've tried to paint larger pictures and get frustrated with various common issues and wind up quitting . This idea gives a shorter time frame for each "piece" and lots of opportunity to experiment. Thank you for such a great idea.

I have had very little artistic training in my life, apart from a class in my senior year of high school. I had a professional artist uncle and his professionally trained wife. And they would gift me with art workbooks when I was younger, but that was all. I gleaned little from that source. But... in my high school years I did a lot of drawing. I had sketch books (and scrap paper) that I filled every space of. They weren't strictly dived like in this video, but still I filled pages with unrelated sketches and other practice. 🙂 *divided

I slice painters tape lengthwise to get thinner strips. I use a clear ruler and exacto knife on a cutting mat. Works better than Washi tape

Thank you Shana! Such a great idea... I will definitely be trying this very soon :) As for the washi tape - I've not used anything else since reviving my watercolour efforts about a year ago (strictly a beginner). I love it - it's low-tac and I can easily find it in tubes of varying widths to suit any size 'creation'. However I ALWAYS press it down with a smooth plastic paddle, particularly the edges, and have never had a problem. I always get clean smooth edges. Washi tape is brilliant and inexpensive and doesn't harm the paper (Baohong, Paul Rubens and Fabriano) except for a local handmade paper that it took the top layer off but I would suggest that would have happened with any tape - I certainly won't be trying painter's tape on it! Thanks again again for the Tuesday Tinies and your lovely folk art inspirations :)

Great little demo. Thanks. I have quite a lot of QoR and I love them, they seem to "shine" like no other watercolours, which is what you want sometimes. Having said that, I only have the Cobalt Teal in the Daniel Smith and this QoR version looks a bit more granulating and maybe a little more yellow leaning. I love that you used it for a sky. I've never thought of using a Teal for a sky and you're absolutely right, it gives that immediate vintage vibe to a piece, especially with a warmer green. Cheers

I love painting small. I cut my paper into artist trading card size cards and paint and store them. Those plastic gum containers work perfectly for storage. Your paintings are pretty.

I generally use painters tape or regular masking tape, which both work well. I have used washi tape and will use it on more delicate surfaces but I find it doesn’t always adhere as well.

Thank you for watching. In the descriptions you can usually find all my supplies. In this one I used an 8x8 bee watercolor book. And I used Cobalt teal, Payne’s grey, sap green, raw umber and burnt sienna.

You can take superfine steel wool, I think it’s 4 zero, 0000, and brush or lightly scrub plastic surfaces to stop beading without making unsightly or deep scratches..

Wow! I’m a recent subscriber and I’m so glad I found you! These were great tips for a beginner (and probably more experienced artists). You’ve inspired me to try some small exercises like this. (I’ll check out your other videos to!😊) If you have a paper trimmer (with the blade that slides down a ruler to cut-think Fiskars), you can put a different tape like artists tape or masking tape down in the trimmer lengthwise and just use the blade to cut the tape into slimmer pieces. Hope this makes sense. 💕

Great video!!! I need to ask you. Have you ever tried the bee watercolor paper in single sheets? They usually come in packs of 25. I can get a 50 pack from Blicks or Jerry’s Artarama for around twenty dollars. (6x9) Is this watercolor sketchbook the same paper? Just wondering because I ADORE the sheets and would love to have it in sketchbook form.

Yea, I have used the sheets. That’s how I was first introduced to new paper. It’s the same paper as in the 140lb cold press sketchbook/journals.

I’m not a big fan of washi tape. I just happened to have some in hand. So I do t really have a recommendation. I much prefer painter’s tape or artists tape. I found this for a thinner tape. amzn.to/3mYxJxX

Hi Shana, such a wonderful and funny idea! About tape: I take some broad masking tape and put it on drawing paper or what I have, not the expensive type. I then use a cutter or scissors to cut the masking tape as narrow as I want and as my cutter allows me. When I remove the masking tape from the paper, it gives me some narrow tape lengths that I can use the same way that you use the washi tape in the video, but is is plain white (and cheaper) It works for me, perhaps you can use it too?
