This is a great video. I love that you're enthusiastic about so many aspects of natural history. It seems like sometimes STEM people have sort of a defensive hostility to art and I like that I never see any of that from the Brain Scoop.

This show is cookin' with STEAM. :D Art (or the arts) is a great creative element that can enhance and energize the other branches of STEM.

You know, when I was in school I was the only kid who got a "C" in art. Now, about 15 years later, I not only take some (hopefully) artistic photos of landscapes and sometimes animals, but I also draw and I really love it! School can really ruin your interests and drain your motivation. I'm so glad to see videos like this, that inspire people to just do it. Nothing bad can happen, nobody was a talented or great painter when they were born. Just do it. If you don't like it, keep doing it until you like what you're doing!

photographer85 I graduated 17 years ago and just this past year I got into what I can my artsy fartsy phase and I’ve been loving it. I can’t draw to to save my life, but I have fun doing it lol. And the most important part is that it makes me feel good. I tend to let my emotions take over and most times I’m pleasantly surprised by what I can draw.

I’m suuuuper late to the party but I completely agree! I did get good grades in art, but having to justify & explain every little detail totally took the fun out of creating art for me. Thanks to ye olde plague times I’ve finally started drawing again and even though I’m still just doing beginner exercises (to build confidence) I’m so glad I did it and I’m having so much fun. I hope you’re still enjoying it too!

As a fellow artist/scientist, I really appreciate you talking about how well the two subjects compliment one another. I'd also love to see more content like this, as well as more of Ms. Macnamara, she's awesome! Possibly an episode on field sketches and how they've helped scientists over the centuries?

Peggy's colourful art reminds me of when I was in school and we were making ceramic dragons and when it came to painting them I decided I wanted to use every colour but my teacher thought it couldn't be done. Being as stubborn as I am, I did it anyway and in the end he told me he had thought it wouldn't work but somehow I managed it. According to my younger sisters he still talks about me and how I was stubborn and did things my own way.

I'm training for scientific illustration myself, and its always wonderful to see people merge science and art. At the core of both art and science is just the act of paying extreme attention to something. Artists may rely heavily on visual cues alone, but the form and function of something can sometimes best be conveyed after being filtered through the mind of an artist. Which is so beautiful if you ask me. Great stuff here.

This video made me so, so happy. I've been following the brain scoop for a few years now and I too finished a BFA in painting this past December. It's nice to know that an art education can lead you into so many different, amazing directions, and I feel that my art education has given me the tools to think and look at the world with much more open eyes. Thank you for this Emily. Hopefully I'll have the pleasure to paint with you someday, and venture out the way you have too.

This is so interesting because I had kind of the opposite experience. I was always into animals so my parents bought me a variety of books on birds and insects. Because I used to think drawing from real life was too complicated I would pick out the animal illustrations from these book and try to sketch them. Some of my fondest memories are of when my grandmother babysat and we would spend the night drawing together. I've improved in my artistic skills but, science has always been my favorite! Those are some beautiful colors Macnamara uses, and Emily, I didn't realize how amazing of an artist you were!

At the beginning of this video I paused it and told my daughter that even though I think I had a lot of art talent, I never bothered to develop skill because of what Peggy said toward the end - that I thought I needed to be GREAT from the beginning or I had no talent. Which is odd, because my dad was a professional musician and made a really big point between the difference between talent and skill my whole life. Peggy is amazing. BTW, Peggy - I just dyed my pink hair aqua and purple.
