Painting tutorial for battle-worn Black Templars

Here is a quick tutorial on how I paint my rank-and-file Black Templars. I like my space marines to look like they're in the middle of a life-or-death fight on the battlefield, not fresh off the showroom floor. It's not quite what I'd call "grimdark," more battle-worn. Still, it's a pretty quick process, and you'll get a good looking army without a ton of time spent.

I say this on lots of videos: I have a really nice Iwata airbrush and generator... but I have been loving my cheapy battery operated $70 job from Amazon, in fact so much I bought a second one while my good rig goes unused most of the time. The battery airbrushes just sit in my painting area, no setup needed, just easy. The one I vouch for is listed as something something deluxe kit, from autolock or something like that. There are slightly cheaper ones out there I just can't vouch for them in particular.

I've considered giving one of those a spin. What I like about the $99 kit is the compressor works with higher end brushes as well. I may give that a try, though.

@@MTFTabletop If you're doing like "precise" work, they're not quite as smooth as a nice compressor providing perfect airflow, but for 90% of what we use airbrushes for (base layers, blends here and there, sealing layers, etc) they're pretty much as good. I mean, if someone doesn't have an airbrush to begin with, I think it's a good first step. If I'm dropping a Zenithal on like a batch of dudes, I break out the better brush because it's smoother. But, yeah, I dig it. The battery lasts about 30 minutes of heavy use, and recharges in a very short time. Dig the video! Good luck with the channel!

Black is such a hard color to pull off convincingly. Lean to heavy to the blues to build up black, it looks like a Untramarine. Don’t high light it enough and it doesn’t look as realistic. So props to you for getting it this good and selling that black armor
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Thanks! Black is definitely one of those colors that can be tricky. I've lost count at how many different methods I've tried, but this one serves me well for the rank and file. I'm going to try something different for an upcoming video.

I recommend using your old beat to death Sable brushes for oil washes as the mineral sprits wreak havoc on your synthetics.

Also a good call. I'm just really to the point where I have started replacing any sables.

I know I'm a year late, but man, this video has been just what I need! I only got into warhammer this year, and black templars are already my favorite faction. I've been looking for a battle worn, grimdark look for my black templars that didn't look too time consuming, but not too rushed either. I love your work on this, and honestly, I cant thank you enough for making this!

I'm glad it's helpful! This is the end result of a looot of testing various things, and I may iterate on it further in a future video.

@@MTFTabletop I'm looking forward to seeing you re-iterate on this! Been too long since I saw a grimdark marine that didn't look like he just got done running through a catachan jungle.

I think you've convinced me to give oils a try... I have lots of space wolves that an oil wash would help a lot with.

This is uncannily well timed. I literally started basing my templars last night, going for almost the exact same process. Im aiming to keep them slightly cleaner than yours, focusing the grim more around the legs and going lighter on the arms (a fresh off the assault craft look lol). But you've literally showcased each technique I was planning on in 1 video. Super handy! Especially since my first oil paints arrived this week too!
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Glad to help! You can definitely be more aggressive than I was cleaning the torso. When I want my legs REAL dirty is when I still go for striking grime or weathering pigment.

@@MTFTabletop i do have a question though. You said the ink you used was a really dark brown, can you recommend a black ink that's a dark blue?
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Most of the acrylic inks I see are Carbon Black, which is the brown variety, because the pigment is derived from literally burning organic material. Black Templars Contrast is honestly probably the closest. Monument Hobbies has a ProAcryl Transparent black, but I'm not sure what pigments it uses. If you want a blue note, you could potentially mix carbon black with Paynes Gray, which is a bluish off-black.

I love your style! I'm still on the Streaking Grime but starting to get tired of the look. Oil washes are definitely something I want to try....about to start a Sisters army and trying to plan a scheme and found this vid looking for black armor ideas. Whenever I try to use inks through my air brush I end up getting almost a wash effect, though.....have to work on my patience a bit I think! Great video; I was shocked by the size of your channel. Definitely punching above your weight class with the few videos I've seen!
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Thank you for the kind words! I still use Grime a bit, but it's definitely tricky on black. Ink through an airbrush takes a little practice. I do tend to drop the PSI a bit compared to when I use regular paint to give me a little extra control, and I go real light on the trigger.

Awesome and simple way of doing black Templar power armor. Perfect video for me to watch as I start painting a new chapter but I have a question regarding that grimy look from using oils. Any simple way to use agrax or skeleton horde to get a similar result ?
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 6 месяцев назад
You probably could. The main advantage of oils is the ability to go back and clean up some areas. If you're using acrylic washes, you'll either end up with a grimier look or will need to be more targeted when applying them.

Nice one mate. Nice take on a speed paint. Good luck with the channel. Love the fuck ups and subtitles. Funny as. Varnishing over wet oils though, how's that work? Surely the varnish will prevent the oils setting? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, keep improving. Keep up the good videos.
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Good question. My preference is to let them sit, but I have gone the varnish route a few times. So long as the mineral spirits are evaporated, it doesn't seem to cause an issue. Thanks for the kind words!

Hi! Thanks for the great tutorial ^^ May I ask if you dilute the liquitex black ink with water? With what proportion?
@Dante1039

Nice tutorial. How would you go about painting vehicles with such a method? Just use the same? Won't it be problematic with all the flat surfaces? I'd like to find a way to keep an even look throughout an army.

Hey. i'm thinking of using a similar method, great vid! If I wanted to make a bit more detailed look, would you recommend edge highlights or is that just going to be covered up by the wash?
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Thanks! I've tried edge highlights, but they do indeed often get covered by the wash. An alternative approach could be to target the wash more than I do in this video. Maybe limit it more to the non-black surfaces, or let it sit for less time on the black parts of the armor.

How are you diluting your black ink for that effect?
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Acrylic ink is very fluid, it goes straight through the airbrush. I just go easy on the trigger to avoid flooding the area. When I use ink with a brush, I put a little flow improver and some glaze medium in it.

If you're considering making a living from Airbrush work please be careful. A lady who used to paint stone figurines for a garden centre for a living went blind from the Acetone and paint fumes slowly eating away the surface of her eyes. The fume danger is real!
@MTFTabletop
@MTFTabletop 2 года назад
Acetone is indeed harsh stuff. Thankfully, the stuff we use on plastics is necessarily less corrosive. That said, it is a good idea to exercise caution, especially when it comes to inhaling particulates from acrylics.
