I have always felt like my washes didn't feel right and just left the model feeling kinda "dirty" and been trying to think of how to improve it for my new Tau army. This is exactly what I was wanting, thank you!

I am here for exactly the same reason. Tau army, nuln oil and agrax earthshade giving me a very 'drity' looking model. Cant wait to try this and maybe combine with a dry brush highlight to make a pretty effective speed paint system.

I watched the video and thought there's no way it works so well and is so easy. I got the black and dark brown and even without using a gloss varnish, these worked great. I'm super impressed. I really appreciate you doing such an in-depth demo. This helped me a ton. I'm not a very good small detail painter, and these are even better than washes for the whole 'talent in a bottle.' Thanks so much for showing this.

Thank you for sharing. After the "pin washing" is complete, if we wish to continue with Acrylic Painting, do we need to apply a Matt Varnish over the Gloss Varnish first?

you can get basically the same effect with acrylics. I use vallejo gloss varnish and citadel nuln oil gloss for my space marines. Any mistakes can be erased with vallejo airbrush thinner and a cotton swab/Makeup sponge. After that a coat of matt varnish seals everything in and makes the surface paintable again.

How do you get the Nuln Oil to slide in the lines?
@tychoMX
@tychoMX 3 года назад
@@captnwinkle not nearly as nice/neat as polar-in-non-polar (physics/chemistry is the reason lacquer works so well over acrylics), but I add a very small amount of dishwasher liquid.

Well as someone who's been using Nuln Oil for years, this oil is absolute bullsh*t and I'm angry at myself for not getting it sooner.....great vid!

Only a minor nit, but Tamiya says their panel Line accent colours are enamel, not oil?

Just subscribed! Love the vid! I'm looking at using the Tamiya Panel Line on some Dark Angels. Daft question but could you re-apply the base colour over the top instead of using the Mineral spirits to tidy it up? Many thanks! :)

Good lord, either that airbrush pressure is like 150PSI, or the microphone is right off camera, haha.

At 14:52 you mention block in all the other colors. Can you please explain what you meant with that? Is it possible to use the Tamiya Panel Line Accent color on miniature that is basically finished, missing only panel lines?
@AkuraTheAwesome
@AkuraTheAwesome 4 года назад
Yeah, you can do that. The whole idea is that it can be one of the last things you do.

Hey I've watched this video a few times now. I was wondering about your thought process on having a base coat of the brown into the white? Is that why you chose a brown panel liner? I'm doing sisters with a similar white armor theme, but their cloak color is greenish blue so I'm wondering if instead of brown I should base coat with a dark blue so the shadows kind of marry with the cloaks.

Great video! instead of using mineral spirits to clean it after, can you just use your original base paint over it?

If you don't have an air brush to apply the varnish what do you recommend? I have used Mr.Super Clear Gloss in the past for spray on varnish.
@neilburns372
@neilburns372 4 года назад
Late reply, but a rattle can of gloss varnish works exactly the same. I use Army Painter, because you can hit it with anti-shine after if you wanna dull it down.

Great video showing an age old technique! Instead of using the Humbrol stuff or if someone is unable to find it anywhere, Wal-mart/hardware stores carry a product called Pledge "Revive It" floor gloss. It is an acrylic covering for hardwood floors that has been used under various names by scale modelers for years and years. Another trick is using Q-tips for removing the excess with the mineral oil.

Does the white spirit not eat into the basecoat?
@SimonDancka

The gloss varnish should protect the basecoat.

Just something which I noticed. If your airbrush is a dual action airbrush, you're using it wrong. It was kinda hard to see, but it did look like you were pulling back in the trigger, meaning it IS dual action, if you were just pressing down then it was single action and I apologise. With a Dual Action, you should press the trigger down to start air flow, and essentially leave it on and then pull back with the trigger to allow paint flow. Essentially, this will give you a better flow, and also stop you risking getting globs coming out when you don't expect it (as well as reduce free flow).

looks easy to use but I can't stand the gloss finish it leaves.

Just what I was going to ask! Without varnish will the Tamiya accent color still behave the same?
@remarkzero
@remarkzero 2 года назад
I would highly recommend it as the varnish protects the plastic from the tamiya panel line stuff. I learned the hard way with a mastergrade gundam kit. They say you can apply the tamiya lightly and it wont cause the plastic to crack but... that has not been my experience.

Great video, but could have been maybe 5 minutes, save us skipping watching the back of your knuckles while you airbrush. A "here's one I prepared earlier" approach would have sped that up. Useful info though

People actually dunk a whole model into a wash? in 30 years of painting I've never done that or even met a person who will admit to that!

They usually do this with Army Painter Quick Shade tins, which are designed to allow you to dunk an entire model in the shade.
