8:40 oh my god THANK YOU for acknowledging that brushes DO matter to an extent. Years of watching art tutorials and it’s always kind of bothered me that nobody will say it. Yes it’s true that you can technically do ‘anything’ with round opacity brush but there are certain feels, textures, and workflows that require specific brushes and brush dynamics. If brushes didn’t matter, even the most advanced artists would always use the hard round. I also think it’s kind of annoying how every artist says you shouldn’t need to use their brushes and should make your own. Yes that is the eventual goal, but the brush engines in photoshop and even procreate are too complicated for a beginner or even intermediate (IMO) to understand how to create a brush that does exactly what they want without experimenting with other people’s first.

Hey, Yeah I know what you mean. I would say, the reason everyone says that is because they CONSTANTLY get asked for brushes from artists that need to focus on fundamentals. Doesn't stop your comment from being right, just explains the reasoning. I have released a video on creating brushes, might be worth checking out if you find it difficult. Its surprisingly easy. I recommend if you buy brushes, look at the settings and work out how it works and then create your own :) Happy Painting!

I’m quite new to digital art and I really like the results you got here. I’ve tried some similar ideas, but without the same effect you got. I think I will continue to try and improve on what I’ve started with; I REALLY like what you’ve done.

I just found your channel and I'm honestly feeling so inspired after watching this! I'm a character artist, have been for like 15 years (started when I was 5, but have taken it seriously ever since), and I have this problem where I can ONLY draw characters; I'm at a complete loss when it comes to scenery. So now, about two years into the planning of a comic series, I'm here struggling to figure out how scenery works and feeling inadequate because, for the first time in as long as I can remember, I have no idea what I'm doing as an artist. Your videos have genuinely comforted me and given me whole new ideas about where to start, so I really hope you keep it up with this content!
@PixelPusher

Thank you Ayliesha. Its cool that your working on a comic and your character work is going well. It can be a challenge when you start to learn a new aspect of art such as environments but remember if your frustrated and struggling, your on the verge of learning something new and improving as an artist. I would recommend starting simple such as learning perspective with box shapes to block out a frame and then detail it after that. Good luck with it, and let me know how it goes :) Side note: haven't posted in a while due to freelance commitments but I will post again soon so keep an eye out for new content :)

Trying to discover this technique for myself in order to think more in terms of shapes and to possibly be more efficient with painting in the beginning - I really appreciate your point about not worrying too much about this process if you don’t like the style, but that it is still useful in blocking out composition and value structure and stuff like that. Great video, very encouraging; thank you!

Hi Sam, thank you very much for these videos, they are very useful and I'm getting a lot out of it. Also, it's very satisfying to see your painting process! It´s beautiful. I have a question about the lasso tool and I wonder if maybe you can help me. Whenever I use the lasso tool it leaves a residue of the first color used just slightly outside the edges of the selection. Even if I erase the content it will leave that line behind. Have you come across the same problem? And if so, how have you fixed it? Thank you in advanced.
@PixelPusher
@PixelPusher 4 года назад
Hey Samarcanda, Thank you. Im glad they are useful :) Yeah so at the top of photoshop (beneath all the tabs, file, edit ect.) when you have lasso selected you should see feather. I imagine you have that on. It should be set to 0px. Also, turn on Anti - alias if its not already (should be to the right of feather). Hope that helps, if not im not sure what it is thats causing the problem. Also make sure your working with a high enough resolution. Around the 2000 mark or above with 200dpi should be fine.

@@PixelPusher Hi! Thanks for taking the time to respond :) I just doubled check and I had all the settings as you mentioned, so no idea what it can be... oh, well. I will have to embrace this mysterious issue I guess.

as someone who is better at drawing than painting, the lasso tool approach to painting is VERY useful. on a side note, do you have tips or videos or suggestions of people who have used the lasso tool approach to foliage? this is where I stumble using this approach...

I love your work! Can I ask what brushes you used for the first two paintings? I'm new to this, and I'm having a hard time finding some larger abstract/splattery brushes I like to use. *insert blerb about what you said about brushes*
@PixelPusher
@PixelPusher 4 года назад
Hey, thank you. Im really sorry, but I dont know. I lost all my brushes a while back. If I remember correctly it was a pretty standard brush with texture and Transfer on. When using the lasso, Scattering can be fun to play around with in the settings. Not the answer you were looking for, but hope that helps.

Is it still as beneficial if i go for complex shapes that are not similar to their basic structures? Like if i wanted to draw skinfolds on a man's face with lasso tool is it okay if just draw the entire shadow as one continuos shape caused by the folds ? Rather Than i multiple discontinuous shapes that change values according to the intensity of light? Or basically should I go for details with the lasso tool?

@daviedood2503

What about using grid lines to make sure pieces are in good perspective? Do you use them
@PixelPusher
@PixelPusher 4 года назад
Yeah it depends on the piece. If im using 3 point I will, or if im creating something with a lot of straight lines. Make sure you don't get too stuck with making it perfect though, the piece will be really stiff if you do that.
@daviedood2503
@daviedood2503 4 года назад
@@PixelPusher ahhh yea. This is true. Nature has its little quirks etc. I've see certain jobs done that took a very long time to complete because they wanted to do it perfect. Afterwards, it looked really off as it seemed to go against nature and what we're all use to seeing. Like a face. Both sides don't have perfect symmetry. Which by the way is a fun thing to do. Take a front facing photo of your face, cut in half. Copy left side, copy right side. Replace the right side with the copy of your left side, and do the same replacing the left side with a copy of the right side. 😂 The 3 different faces made will show you what you'd look like with a perfectly semetrical face. 😂
