I agree with most of the comments here - quite a comprehensive yet straight to the point demo - the Bach music doesn't bother me the slightest). I love the tip on the ghost ball of Sparkle - in fact, it can probably be squeeze onto the holes directly and use a putty knife to scrape off the excess Sparkle, etc. Fast and less mess! Such a great video - many thanks and regards!

I wish you would come paint my trim! I am in Alabama...this is by far, the most informative trim painting video on the web. Very nice job! I am a DIYer and my favorite tip was putting the spackle in the "Ghost" ball...hahaha. So much cleaner then sticking your finger in the pail each time. Well, my brush is drying because I am so happy to find this video and am taking a break. Don't forget...I live in Alabama and will be waiting for ya to come and do the rest of my house. We are replacing all the trim. Been at it for a while now and really need it done!!! Thanks and I will be waiting!!!! Lololol

I forgot to ask I have crown moulding in one room and the house must have shifted a bit so there is a fine line between the ceiling and the moulding how do I fill it in without getting the spackle on the walls?

Thanks, John. I'm redecorating my bedroom and had Two windows to paint. This video has really helped. If you have time here's a question for you. All the pros emphasise the importance of high quality brushes which you justr keep cleaning. But for occasional decorators like me (I do it when years pass and I have forgotten what a lot of work it was the last time) I feel that cheaper brushes that can be thrown away after the project may be a better idea. Today I painted one window with a previously used higher quality brush whch I'd cleaned a few times. It was quite stiff and brush strokes were a bit strong. On the second window I used the same size brush but a new cheap brush. I found this easier to use and it was more flexible, and I think left a slightly better finish. There was virtually no bristle loss (only one came out). What's your take on this? BTW thanks for the demo of laying off. Really useful. All best from London. Myles

Do you need to apply a primer or undercoat to a previously painted trim surface. Is sanding enough? The colour I want to use is darker than the trim paint that already exists

One misteak never let paint dry on tape and two for best looking finish apply another sanding 220 grit over primer before final coat..good job tho..

The window trim is coming to me already primed and I will be able to paint them before they put the windows in. I would like to know hwat kind of paint I should buy to paint the wood trim. I am painting them white, but have now idea what brand is the best.
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 8 лет назад
+Barbara Hanley I would use a latex semi-gloss enamel paint, which is more durable and easier to clean than flat paint. Whatever brand you use, don't buy their cheapest product, buy something in the middle- to upper-end of quality and price range. As for specific brands, you can't go wrong with Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams, but there are many other good brands of paint. Just don't buy their cheapest product! Good luck.

Do you ever caulk the joint between the molding and window? And touching up the wall after caulking do you just free hand that?
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
Patricia Christensen You do not need to caulk the crack where the wood meets the vinyl window. That will leave unpainted caulk smeared on the vinyl and won’t look good. Unpainted caulk tends to attract dust over time and look dirty. Plus if you are really precise about not getting any caulk on the vinyl, then eventually the material will shrink a small bit and leave a ragged gap. I suppose if you are really concerned about drafts coming through the small gap then you can caulk it, but I believe that if the windows are installed properly and the gaps are sealed properly on the outside, it’s not necessary to caulk the small gap between the wood trim and the vinyl window inside. It looks much cleaner if you just leave it alone. You might want to check out this other video for more details on painting wood trim and windows: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eB0kQ_zYdHc.html

I had he same thought. There is too much gap between my windows and the wood so we caulked all around them already. I taped off the window first though to minimize the amount of caulk that actually got on the window and I got really close. I will paint over the caulk so hopefully that will reduce the amount of dirt that collect because you are right, caulk attracts dirt like crazy! Thanks for the great video. I have 26 windows to get started on now lol.

Great Video Again. How long do you allow the spackle to dry? I was reading a tub of spackle and it said at least 7 to 14 days, Never heard such a thing. Also it called for an oil base primer if using a latex paint. Cannot imagine little dabs of primer for all the spackle holes. Why not just use a paintable silicone for spackle that is paintable in 30 minutes? I figure there has to be a good reason no one does, I just don't know what it is. BTW the spackle ghost idea worked fantasticly for us, thank you. Thanks

What kind of paint is it best to use to paint wood trim?
@BurtBowers
@BurtBowers 4 года назад
Best to use Alkyn oil based paint, using latex paint generally will stick on doors of cabinets & interior doors when trying to open the doors.

You should really prime Bairwood before you put caulking on it because the Bairwood will suck all the moisture out of the caulking and it well then start cracking just a suggestion thank you
@per-gunnarperramalarecarls1170
have you paid the tape factory to use as much tape and expensive for the customer
@howtopaintahouse
@howtopaintahouse 9 лет назад
Funny you say that, the only reason I papered over the window was because I didn't want the video to be backlit by natural light. Normally I would just use blue tape on the vinyl...that's about it. Actually, a pro or DIY painter with a very steady hand can do it without blue tape, just freehand. If you get a little paint on the vinyl just use a damp rag wrapped around a putty knife to wipe it off immediately. For most DIY painters, though, I think using blue tape is a good idea to protect the windows.

u caulk bare wood ? shouldn't u prime first
@pbaylis1
@pbaylis1 8 лет назад
Not necessarily. Yes, caulking bare wood will draw some moisture out of the caulk, but you can use this to your advantage as it also helps the caulk to settle into the joint and not be so obvious.
@Maghanashi
@Maghanashi 7 лет назад
On the other hand priming and undercoating first will reduce the amount of caulk needed.

why would u piss about with tapping all that up just paint it free hand u yanks use tape for everything. U do all your priming first before u fill any painter worth there salt knows that as when u put a coat of primer on it fills some gaps and u can see much easier what needs filled
