Pairing an Apple Keyboard with Windows 10

In this episode I'll show you how to successfully pair an Apple Wireless Magic Keyboard (first generation, MC184B/A) with Windows 10 (Version 1809). I've found so much conflicting information on the web, so I'm showing you what worked for me - in May 2019.
I'm using a HP Z800 Workstation here, with a no-frills Belkin F8T013 (early millennial vintage).

I have a Magic Keyboard with Numeric keypad and although my keyboard doesn't have the button on the side, I followed the instructions here to enter the number (onto my magic keyboard) that showed up on my laptop, followed quickly by hitting "enter" and then I hit the connect button on the screen. It worked!

This does not work for my 1st gen keyboard. If anyone else has this problem here's the fix - settings -> bluetooth devices, if your keyboard is listed unpair it. Close that, right-click on the Windows button, select "run". Type "devicepairingwizard" into the bar. Choose your keyboard from the list. This opens a pop-up that asks for a code. Directly under that it says "I don't have a code" or something to that affect. Click that, it displays a code to type in your keyboard, do that and hit return. You have to do it fast so it may take a couple attempts. Be sure to hit "return" after typing the code or it won't work. It then says "connecting". It takes a Long time to connect, maybe 2-3 minutes. Wait it out and you are good to go.

@@WPguru Hopefully not many will need it, lol. You need to be a little tech- savvy but I had no choice but to use it since the normal method wouldn't work.

I followed this approach. did not get the message about not having a code. So I entered 0000 on the pc, and then 0000 on the Apple key board. Bingo

If anybody else has the problem that your computer requests a PIN for the keyboard - just type any 8 digit number and press connect. While it is still connecting, enter the same 8 digit code on your keyboard and press return. Also keep on pressing that button on the right side while doing it. Felt so silly but worked for me!

This is the only video that helped me! Make sure that no USBs are connected to your computer or imac when you turn it on so that it forces itself to look for bluetooth keyboards then keep holding the keyboard button down and dont let it go until it connects and numbers show up on the screen that you need to type out

What are you talking about, there was rambling, he didn't even explain how to remap keys. How am I suppose to use the Windows key on my Apple keyboard??? There is none.

Just came from someone’s office to do some computer work and absolutely could not work on that old clunky Dell keyboard! It was so loud and I felt like I needed to have man hands in addition to working on a high table instead of a roll out keyboard that should be used at every computer desk. Thank you for your video.

I'm so glad it helped and that you have a better typing experience on that desk. Mac keyboards are the best indeed! The only one that comes close is the Logitech MX Keys, in case you ever need a non-Apple keyboard with comparable comfort.

I’ve never owned a Magic Mouse. The keyboard experience is great for regular typing, even though as a long time Mac user the CTRL+C took a bit of getting used to (when your brain wants to press CMD+C). The media keys don’t work without something like Magic Utilities (which costs money), and I found that a drawback. I no longer use my Mac keyboard on Windows and have since upgraded to a Logitech Craft. That’s on par with the typing experience of a Mac keyboard and has the advantage that it works on both my Mac and PC, I can even copy/paste between them and move the mouse from one machine to the other. It was a better solution for my situation.

Thanks, WP Guru. This worked! I had to power off the keyboard completely and then power it on and then into pairing mode by continuously holding it down. From there, it was discovered, gave me the code, which I entered on my Apple keyboard and voila!

Worked for me. My keyboard is a A1314. My light indicator never flashed 'green'. It did take a couple of times to get it completed, but that might have been due to me not being able to tell if the keyboard was on or off? Anyway....typing on it now.

@@PS99Clan2_EZ it does get a little finicky but it worked on mine from 2009. That laptop ended up having a mainboard issue that resulted in the same problems even after replacing the actual keyboard, so it quickly became my go-to since once you’re able to get it set-up through the steps it will always connect back without hassle or cables

Could be that the keyboard is currently paired and connected with something else. I remember having paired my keyboard with my iPad once, and it didn’t show as available in Windows until I removed the active iPad connection.

The confusion is probably that the keyboard iwas actually added automatically if you buy one with a iMac if you press the button for about a second it turns it off to make the batteries last a bit longer

Combined with an iFixit tutorial on how to take apart the electronics and clean the battery contacts, I have a nice bluetooth keyboard from the thrift store for the price of a cheese sandwich! Thank you!

Ah yes the trackpad is a problem. There’s someone who made a driver for it, but he charges an annual fee. Search for Magic Utilities, apparently it supports all features on Windows.

Problem is that my PC does not show any pairing code and keeps asking to Enter the PIN for the keyboard, which I do not know

Paul, enter whatever pin you want on your PC (I did 0000) and click connect, then enter that same code on your Apple keyboard and hit Return. Should connect instantly!
