Hisham Awartani is a Palestinian-American college student who was shot and paralyzed after he and his two other friends were ambushed and targeted in November 2023. Awartani sits down with NBC News’ Tom Llamas to reflect on that day and the Israel-Hamas war.

unfortunately this is on par for the US! When that man shot and killed a bunch of Asian women at those spas, it wasn't charged as a hate crime. They have to prove you yelled a racial slur or something for them to charge them w/ a hate crime. that's why those statistics are not to be trusted

Well there has to be some sort of evidence it was a hate crime. If someone has a psychotic break and happens to shoot minorities because he ran into them first that's not a hate crime. I'm guessing the guy had psychological issues and just can't really be convicted of a hate crime.

The biggest atrocity is the support for Hamas an Iranian backed terrorist proxy that declared war on Israel committing war crimes, crimes against humanity. The Vermont shooting has nothing to do with the belief that Israel has the right to exist. The disgusting criminal who shot these three victims is an American named Jason Eaton. He is not Jewish or Israeli. You can't fix bigotry with even more bigotry. Don't cheapen a tragic situation.

This video is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. Hisham and his friends are victims of a senseless and hateful act of violence, but they also show incredible strength and resilience in the face of adversity. Hisham’s unselfishness and courage are remarkable, as he thinks of other Palestinians who suffer even more than him, and he refuses to let his injury define him. He and his friends are also right to point out the systemic racism and dehumanization that led to this attack, and the injustice of the American court system that has not charged the shooter with a hate crime. This video should be a wake-up call for everyone who cares about human rights and dignity. I hope Hisham and his friends get the justice and support they deserve, and I hope they continue to share their story and their identity with the world. #FreePalestine #JusticeForHisham

All the atrocities and horrors they face, and not once do they curse their occupiers, not once do they complain, only asking for a ceasefire and speaking about how grateful they are of their creator who they find solace in, showing us how they continue to live and push forward whether it's doing their jobs as journalists, doctors, ambulance medics, teachers, rubble diggers, animal rescuers, etc. Their fortitude, resilience, and humility is unlike anything we've seen. And the eloquence of small Palestinian children with wisdom beyond their years is astounding. If you haven't watched, do so in order that you may understand what everyone means when we talk about Palestinian resilience and patience. Almost saint-like.

I got to go to Israel and Palestine last spring 2023, and have to say that Palestinians are very kind, welcoming and friendly people. In several hotels that we stayed at, there were young Palestinian people working as staff in the dining room and they made the effort to learn the names of the food in Korean, so they could say them to us. We were a group of Korean Americans so we could speak English which they were also fluent in, but the fact that they went the extra length to be welcoming towards us with our original language meant a lot. I still think about their faces and pray for them and hope they are doing alright,.

What's most interesting is how the editors at 2:09 blurred out the victim's answer the moment after he was asked "why do you think he shot you." It was right after the victim answered "systematic dehumanization" then you cut to a different section of the interview and did a somewhat impressive job making it seem uncut. The fact is he was probably referring to major news networks including NBC specifically as being complicit in that systematic dehumanization of Palestinians on our TV screens. What was said? What did you cut out?

Props to him for making the best out of his misfortune! Rather than self pity, he chose to be the voice for those being bombed and show how human Palestinians are, while others are de-humanizing them. They say they are animals, he showed they are human. They try to change the narrative, he chose to uphold it. These young men know just how easily Americans can be manipulated, so they told us exactly how it is.
