In this video I demonstrate 2 ways of doing the Palm and needle whipping. A secure and nice looking whipping which is one of the best ones out there- a nice balance of looks and security.
It is also sometimes called the Sailmaker's whipping, referred to as such in The Ashley book of knots. Commonly though, the name Sailmaker's whipping is used for a different whipping.
It is demonstrated in the ABoK as #3446 and #3447.

What kind of whipping needles do you use?

Hey there! These are not really needles designed for whipping. I use harness needles used to stitch leather. They are not sharp, but fairly blunt. I find they work well. Mark

This is not abok 3446. Abok 3446 involves passing the needle underneath the whipping, diagonally through each strand, into the groove between it and the next strand. Then, at the top, it worms down the outside of the grooveline back to the bottom. If you were to take the underneath portion and display it on top, it and the worming would form a vvv shape. The underneath portion is nearly perpendicular to the worming on the outside. That's why it requires a palm. On a properly tensioned whipping, it takes a great deal of force to get the needle to go through so much material.
