Recovery of an abandoned Fishing Aggregating Device (FAD) carried out by the researchers of Oceanomare Delphis during the winter monitoring of cetaceans in the Marine Protected Area Regno di Nettuno.
The fishing gear consists of palm branches tied to floats (usually cans, plastic bottles), and anchored to the seabed by a long rope of synthetic material. Some species, in the Mediterranean mainly pilot fish (Naucrates ductor) and common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), are concentrated under the shade created by palm leaves.
FADs represent a risk for cetaceans, turtles, and sea birds that can get caught in the gear, injure themselves and die of suffocation.
If abandoned at sea they continue to kill indiscriminately for decades. The recovery of abandoned or lost gear is important for the protection of the marine ecosystem.
Recupero di una palma abbandonata effettuato dai ricercatori di Oceanomare Delphis durante il monitoraggio invernale dei cetacei nell'Area Marina Protetta Regno di Nettuno.
L'attrezzo è costituito da frasche di rami di palma legate a galleggianti (spesso taniche, bottiglie di plastica), ed ancorate al fondale tramite una lunga corda di materiale sintetico. Alcune specie, in Mediterraneo prevalentemente pesci pilota (Naucrates ductor) e lampughe (Coryphaena hippurus), si concentrano sotto l'ombra creata dalle foglie di palma.
Rappresentano un rischio per cetacei, tartarughe e uccelli marini che possono impigliarsi nell'attrezzo, ferirsi e morire per soffocamento.
Se abbandonati in mare continuano ad uccidere indiscriminatamente per decenni. Il recupero degli attrezzi abbandonati o andati persi a causa di mareggiate è importante per la tutela dell'ecosistema marino.
