As with any news story there are different perspectives. In Tierras Altas the closures have had crushing impacts on small businesses , ag producers , restaurants and others. If this lasts much longer , the results will be visible on the grocery shelves long term , destroying livelihoods of small businesses , farms ect. Beyond that , as per the constitution of Panama , all have the right to circulate at will and in fact during the Noriega regime such travel was not impeded like this. This is a violation of the rights of any and all who are denied circulation against their wish. So next month, perhaps it will be another issue to fight and another justification to deny personal rights . Closures are a huge problem causing widening divisions and it's getting worse. In Tierras Altas the police themselves are in charge of the closures . This will not end well.

Let's not forget that the canal is a U.S. Navy strategic military asset. If the proverbial sh*t hits the fan Uncle Sam is the man :)

Panama lost. The Panamanian people lost. The second largest employer just went down. All those employees are out of work with jobs that paid more than average. All the business that supported the mine will soon follow. And guess what, that means more unemployment as believe it or not, it’s people that made those businesses profitable as well. Have you seen how quick Ecuador has falling? When you take out a foundation, the building falls.

Panama will be the next Venezuela when the mine closes. Canal traffic at 50 per cent. Tourism is now zero. Moody has downgraded Panama by one point. So, no new investors. I feel for the extreme poor. This will affect you the most. This Gringo can go to Mexico, El Salvador, Argentina... My heart is twisted.

agreed. the Marxist protesters are only interested in power, not about the long term well being of their nation or fellow citizens. the idea that holding an entire nation hostage until they got their way is in any way "virtuous" is a joke. and I dont see any of them smashing their phones or computers or air conditioning to boycott copper. now it will have to come from somewhere else and be more expensive. mining is ugly, most people will agree. but when we live in a world built on resources the mining will just happen in another place. why is Panama any more special than other countries who also deal with the negative side effects of mining? I'm only here on a one month vacation. been living in Mexico the last 2.5 years and am flying back there a week before the holidays. cant wait.

how is this anyone prevailing? our society is built on resources. copper has to come from somewhere. I dont see these protesters smashing their phones, computers, air conditioning etc to boycott copper. so they will continue on with their lives as usual making use of copper that now has to come from somewhere else. almost every country on earth is mined and having resources extracted. I would suggest almost nobody finds mining anything other than ugly and destructive. but why is Panama any more special than any other place that also faces environmental degradation from resource extraction? and the idea that holding an entire country hostage until they get their way is nothing short of terrorism. this is typical Marxist organizations flexing their muscles to defeat the government and corporations with no care for how much damage they are doing to their own future. these people who supposedly care so much about the environment burning tires to block the roads. give me a break. the level of hypocrisy is off the charts.
